Does the ARCS motivational model affect students’ achievement and motivation? A meta-analysis

    No full text
In this meta-analysis, the aim is to determine the overall effect of the ARCS (attention, relevance, confidence, satisfaction) model of motivation on students‘ academic achievement, motivation, attention, relevance, confidence and satisfaction. Additionally, the effect of the model is analysed according to the learning environment in which the model is integrated, discipline area, education level and sample size. The primary studies included in the study were obtained from Web of Science, Scopus, Science Direct, ERIC and PsycARTICLE databases. A total of 38 controlled experimental studies in the form of peer-reviewed articles were coded, resulting in 110 extracted effect size (ES). The sample size of the primary studies involves 8690 students from K-12 (kindergarten to 12th grade) and higher education. Random-effects model was used for overall ES, mixedeffects model for categorical moderators and meta-regression analysis for integer moderators. As a result of the study, it was determined that the overall effect of ARCS on achievement was at medium level (ES = 0.74) and the overall effect on motivation was at small level (ES = 0.43). ESs of achievement differed by the moderators of discipline and the ESs of motivation differed by the moderator of education level. There was not a significant relationship between the effect of ARCS on achievement and motivation, and moderator of sample size. Remarkable ESs have been obtained in the learning environment moderator related to the dependent variables of blended learning, robots, augmented reality; in the discipline moderator related to architecture, computer technologies, sciences and maths; in the level of education moderator related to undergraduate variables. In addition, very large ES related to the attention component of ARCS was obtained. The results obtained in this study do not represent the strength of the evidence, as it is based on the validity and reliability of primary studies

Motivation can be a powerful influencing factor on students’ efforts in a given activity and their perseverance in completing the activity. The ARCS (attention, relevance, confidence, satisfaction) model of motivation was developed by John Keller in 1979 to find effective and systematic ways to understand the effects of ARCS on students’ learning motivatio

Tourophobia: fear of travel resulting from man-made or natural disasters

    No full text
Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to examine how crises impact overall tourist behaviour and travel preferences in times of crisis events, both man-made and natural disasters. In doing so, the present paper has been designed to provide a new conceptualization of travellers’ shifting preferences in terms of the selection of holiday destinations through the new concept of tourophobia and to classify this as a new type of tourist behaviour. Design/methodology/approach: The present study uses a literature review as a qualitative deductive content analysis of 58 field studies published by major hospitality and tourism journals. By using a deductive content analysis approach, the current paper is designed to delineate tourist behaviour through a generic review of relevant literature detailing travellers’ preferences in times of crisis. Findings: The developed concept of tourophobia and the suggested model, which proposes two possible scenarios, shows that traveller behaviour is heterogeneous in terms of the destination selection process; this finding is based on a content analysis of the articles chosen. Further, by using the developed model, the decline in travel and tourism can also be explained by an increase in what is termed in this paper “tourophobia”, which results from the various devastating effects of crises. Research limitations/implications: The proposed model is expected to help destination managers and marketers to segment and forecast the future market demand of tourist travel preferences, thereby enabling them to form effective marketing strategies and increase their responsiveness during difficult times. Only articles from hospitality and tourism journals were subjected to content analysis; this is a major limitation of the study. Originality/value: The present research contributes to current knowledge by describing the concept of tourophobia as a tourist behaviour in times of crisis. As an emerging phenomenon, it is also introduced as being one criterion for the selection of destinations and, therefore, is regarded as a driver for tourist behaviour, thus generating the originality of the paper. This study strives to provide a new direction for future studies on tourist behaviour, rather than offering new empirical data

In the study, the ameliorating effects of alfa lipoic acid (ALA) against doxorubicin-induced testicular apoptosis, oxidative stress and disrupted mitochondrial fusion were investigated in male rats. Rats were divided into four groups as control, doxorubicin (DOX), DOX + ALA and ALA. A single dose of 15 mg/kg DOX was administered i.p to the DOX and DOX + ALA groups. 50 mg/kg ALA was given to the DOX + ALA and ALA groups by oral gavage every other day. After 28 days, rat testes and serum samples were collected and analysed. Administration of DOX alone caused a decrease in body and relative testicular weights, seminiferous tubule diameter and germinal epithelium thickness, Johnsen's score and serum testosterone levels. DOX treatment led to severe testicular damage such as tubular degeneration, and atrophic tubules. Also, the activities of superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase were reduced, while the level of malondialdehyde was increased in the testis. The mRNA levels of apoptotic-related genes (CASP3, TP53, BAX, BCL2) and apoptotic index were increased, while mitofusin-2 decreased. DOX caused an increase in CASP3 and a decrease in mitofusin-2 immunoreactivities. Treatment with ALA markedly improved all of DOX-induced biochemical, histochemical and molecular alterations in rat testis. Consequently, ALA has a therapeutic role in ameliorating DOX-induced testicular damage in rats. This study was supported by the Mardin Artuklu University Scientific Research Projects Management Unit, Mardin, TURKEY, [Project number M. The study aimed to investigate the effects of dexmedetomidine against ischaemia-reperfusion injury occurring after priapism in a model of induced-priapism in rats. A total of 18 male rats were randomised into three groups. Group 1 was the control group. A priapism model was performed rats in Group 2 and then ischaemia-reperfusion injury was evaluated. Group 3 had similar procedures to the rats in Group 2. Rats in Group 3 additionally had 100 μg/kg dexmedetomidine administered intraperitoneally immediately after reperfusion. Blood and tissue samples were analysed. Biochemical analysis of blood samples revealed a decrease in the levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokines including interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 Beta), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) in Group 3 compared to Group 2 (p:.04, p:.009 and p:.009, respectively). Similarly, the highest malondialdehyde (MDA) level was in Group 2 (p:.002). The levels of antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activities were significantly higher in Group 3 than that of Group 2 (p:.037 and p:.045, respectively). Direct microscopic examinations revealed positive changes in desquamation, oedema, inflammation and vasocongestion scores in Group 3 compared to Group 2 (p:.007, p:.008, p:.007 and p:.006, respectively). Dexmedetomidine has a protective effect against ischaemia-reperfusion injury in penile tissue

In addition to revealing Gilles Deleuze's contributions to the production of meaning and meaning, our study aims to explain the production of meaning with a Deleuze approach. Our study consists of an introduction and three parts. In the introduction section, the metadology of our work is revealed and the concepts we consider in the content are analyzed. In the first chapter, the concept of indicators that allow us to participate in the world, hold the place between us and the world, the types of indicators and the relationship of sensitivity are discussed from a decelerated point of view. Chapter two the concept of an event that we think has an important place in the production of meaning, which is the main topic of our dissertation, and the components that make up the event were considered, the Nevi of the event, its position and its relationship with time were studied, the importance of inviting to the event and the event as a leading person in the production of meaning was demonstrated. In the third part of our study, the relationship between language as a means of expression, the possibilities of language and the production of meaning in terms of the position it takes in the explanation of the event is discussed. In contrast to Deleuze's theories of meaning, his view of meaning production, the arrival of meaning in terms of search, and the relationship of meaning production with the concepts mentioned in other sections have been tried to illuminate. As for Deleuze's view of the production of meaning, the conclusion we have reached is that whatever opens the event and wherever the event opens, meaning as a disembodied organ can be born from there
