Impact of high irradiance and short exposure times on the polymerization kinetics of sculptable and flowable bulk-fill composites
No full textObjective: To determine the presence of exposure reciprocity in nine resin-based composites (RBCs) using fast (3 s, high irradiance) or standard light-curing modes for 10 s, 20 s, or 30 s. Methods: Five sculptable and four flowable bulk-fill RBCs were light-cured using a Bluephase PowerCure light-curing unit (LCU). The RBCs were divided into groups according to the exposure modes tested: fast (3 s mode – at 3130 mW/cm2), or for the manufacturer's recommended time on the standard (High mode at 1226 mW/cm2). The degree of conversion (DC) and reaction rates were measured at 0.2 mm and 4 mm depths for 720 s using real-time spectroscopy. Light transmission (%) was also recorded (n = 3). Parametric or non-parametric 2-way ANOVA was used depending on the data (α=0.05). Results: When compared to the values from the bottom of their 0.2 mm thick value, except for TPFlow-3 s and TPlusFlow-3 s, the bottom of the 4-mm thick specimens had a significantly different DC. Only TPF and TPFlow were statistically the same for both modes at 4 mm; ABF-3 s and OBF-3 s had the lowest DC at the bottom of 4 mm. OBF-3 s had the highest reaction rate at 0.2 mm (61.6 ± 1.2 %/s) while FOBF-10 s had the slowest rate (3.1 ± 0.1 %/s) at the bottom of 4 mm. OBF, BRFlow, TPFlow, TplusFill and TplusFlow had different light transmission patterns than the other RBCs. Depending on the brand of RBC, there was a measurable delay of 0.1 to 2.9 s at the bottom of the RBCs before the polymerization reaction started. Conclusions: Exposure reciprocity does not exist for all RBCs. Depending on the brand of RBC at the bottom of 4 mm there was a measurable delay of 0.1 to 2.9 s before polymerization started. Clinical Significance: Exposure reciprocity depends on the RBC. Short exposures (3 s) using higher irradiance should only be used when recommended by the manufacturer of the RBC.Peer reviewe
Study on Throughputs in 5G and Beyond Networks
No full textThis article provides an analysis of throughput in modern 5G networks, a topic of ongoing importance as research efforts shift toward defining 6G performance requirements. First, the influence of 5G New Radio network configuration parameters on throughput is examined based on technical specifications from the latest 3GPP Release 18. Next, real-world factors reducing the default theoretical data rates between base stations and user equipment are analyzed. Following this, network-scale factors affecting throughput are considered. Finally, assumptions regarding throughput performance in beyond-5G networks are proposed. The study shows that while theoretical data rates in 5G can be high, practical constraints often lead to significant performance gaps - highlighting areas for improvement in future network generations.Peer reviewe

Automated Health Monitoring in Rock Drilling via Machine Learning : Industrial mining application
Get PDFThe mining industry significantly impacts both environmental health and worker safety. This research utilizes the potential of data fusion and machine learning methodologies to advance the monitoring and analysis of rock drilling operations.
A key aspect of our work was to develop an effective strategy for sensor placement, optimizing the collection of crucial operational data. Our primary aim was to implement and develop a robust classification system for identifying key stages of drilling operations to prevent extreme events and reduce potential damages that could lead to substantial financial losses and safety risks.
Building on our earlier research in real-time analysis techniques and operational monitoring, we designed and developed a practical machine learning model that operates as a multi-class classifier. This model uses sensory vibration signals to detect unusual patterns and irregularities, efficiently identifying potential risks. We successfully tested and validated this model by classifying five distinct mining activities, showing its effectiveness in enhancing operational efficiency and predictive maintenance capabilities.
The results of this research significantly enhance safety standards and improve operational protocols within the mining industry, demonstrating the transformative potential of integrating advanced data analysis techniques into traditional industrial practices. Our approach not only increases the accuracy of fault detection but also contributes to more sustainable mining operations by ensuring proactive risk management

Liikkuvat tekstit, liikkuvat naiset tarkastelee Suomen ja Venäjän kirjallisia suhteita keskittyen erityisesti venäjäksi kirjoittavien naisten vastaanottoon Suomessa aina 1800-luvun puolivälistä nykypäivän kirjablogeihin. Käännökset, lehtiarvostelut, tekstienväliset yhteydet ja kirjastoluettelot tuovat valoon toimijoita, jotka ovat jääneet venäläisten miesklassikoiden syvään varjoon niin Venäjällä kuin Suomessa. Samalla avautuu uusia näkökulmia venäjänkielisen kirjallisuuden vastaanoton historiaan ja nykyhetkeen. Abstract (English) Texts on the Move – Women on the Move in the Literary Field of Finland, Russia, and the Soviet Union This volume examines the literary relations between Finland and Russia, focusing on the reception of women writers. Spanning two centuries, it takes us from the 1840s to today’s literary bloggers and digital media. “Reception” is understood broadly to include translations, press reviews, intertextual exchanges, and the physical presence of books in library collections. At the center of the book are the many women – past and present – who have transmitted ideas and ideologies: authors, translators, journalists, and scholars. The book is the outcome of long-term collaboration among seasoned researchers. It shows that women have always been vital literary intermediaries in both Russia and Finland. The volume brings to light numerous women writers and cultural actors who have long languished in the shadow of Russia’s male classics, thus opening up a new perspective on the history of literary reception. It not only enriches but also corrects the existing literary and cultural history between Finland, Russia, and the Soviet Union by generating new knowledge about the roles women have played. Methodologically, the contributors combine deep literary-historical expertise with the innovative use of digital corpora. The findings of the research project that this book introduces are gathered in an open-access database, which will serve future generations of historians and literary scholars. Written in the midst of crisis – while Russia continues its invasion in Ukraine – this book is all the more timely, as it is crucial to understand how culture, literature, and language are involved in creating geopolitical relations. Studying women writers’ oeuvres and reception, as well as their cultural and political activism, casts a new light on the conflicting images of Russia that Finnish readers have interpreted across different eras, often behind various masks and veils.Peer reviewe
Menopause and Endometriosis: Tracing the Entanglements of Hormones, Ageing and Gendered Chronic Illness
No full textThe article explores menopause as a feminist question through a chronic gynaecological illness: endometriosis. As endometriosis is an oestrogen-associated condition, menopause is expected to alleviate endometriosis symptoms, yet its unfolding effects are unknown. Drawing on interviews with clinicians and people with endometriosis in Finland, as well as ethnographic observation at an endometriosis clinic, we show that endometriosis sheds crucial light on menopause as an embodied process. First, the anticipation of menopause in endometriosis involves uncertainties concerning unique bodily responses and narrowing treatment options that affect how people with endometriosis orientate towards a post-menopausal future. Menopause thus extends in time, becoming entangled with the practices of managing gynaecological illness years before the actual onset of menopause symptoms. Second, radical endometriosis surgery that involves removal of the uterus and ovaries produces an early menopause that raises questions about what constitutes menopause. Post-operative care involves delicate tinkering with hormonal medications to achieve a postponement of menopause symptoms while also responding to slowly unfolding processes of gendered ageing that extend beyond hormonal health. At the same time, ideas about “natural menopause” structure radical surgery and postoperative care as a reference point in relation to which post-operative embodied processes are managed.Peer reviewe
Remote Work Intensity in Knowledge Work: Associations with Informal Workplace Learning, Basic Psychological Needs Satisfaction, Job Satisfaction, and Turnover Intention
No full textThe increase in remote working has changed the way both employees and organizations view work in an already tumultuous landscape of the IT sector. In this study, we surveyed Finnish employees (n = 266) from an international IT sector company in 2022 after the remote working mandates were lifted. We firstly examined how remote work intensity (RWI) was associated with informal workplace learning, basic psychological needs satisfaction (BPNS, including autonomy, competence, and relatedness), work engagement, job satisfaction, and turnover intention (RQ1). Second, we investigated using structural equation modeling (SEM) how informal workplace learning, BPNS, and RWI were associated with work engagement and well-being outcomes (job satisfaction and turnover intention) (RQ2). Finally, with RQ3, we examined whether work engagement mediated the associations investigated in RQ2. Results for RQ1 were generally against our expectations as RWI was associated only with relatedness satisfaction (negatively). SEM results for RQ2 generally matched our expectations, as autonomy and relatedness satisfaction were positively related to job satisfaction and negatively related to turnover intention. Furthermore, there was an indirect-only mediation via work engagement between informal workplace learning and job satisfaction, and autonomy satisfaction and turnover intention, in addition to a complementary mediation via work engagement between autonomy satisfaction and job satisfaction (RQ3). The results imply that RWI is not distinctly beneficial or detrimental for learning and well-being at work, however, hybrid work may be preferable in supporting learning and well-being at work compared to full-time remote working.The increase in remote working has changed the way both employees and organizations view work in an already tumultuous landscape of the IT sector. Sexual function in adolescence after childhood hypospadias repair: a patient-reported outcome study
No full textObjective: To present data on sexual function in post-pubertal patients after hypospadias surgery in childhood. Patients and Methods: We assessed 169 (96 distal, 20 midshaft, 53 proximal) patients with hypospadias born between 1991 and 2003, who underwent surgery before the age of 5 years. At a median (interquartile range) follow-up age of 16.2 (16.0–16.8) years, participants completed a pre-mailed sexual function questionnaire, including the Erection Hardness Score (EHS) during the last control visit. Dorsal Nesbit-like plication was used for curvature correction in 62 patients. Previously published normative data served as controls. Results: All patients reported having erections; 73% achieved EHS 4 (completely hard and fully rigid). In patients with distal hypospadias, EHS 4 was reported in 68% of cases, 85% of midshaft and 79% of proximal cases. Among those with and without curvature correction by Nesbit-like plication, EHS 4 was reported in 72% and 74%, respectively. The proportion reporting EHS 4 exceeded that of published controls (P < 0.01). Penile straightness during erection was reported by 95% of patients overall, with no significant differences across hypospadias subtypes or curvature correction status. Only one patient reported pain during ejaculation; none reported pain during erection. Ejaculation was reported by 95% of participants. Conclusion: Adolescents who underwent early hypospadias repair reported favourable sexual function outcomes, including high rates of erectile rigidity and ejaculatory function. Neither hypospadias severity nor the need for curvature correction affected these outcomes. These findings support the long-term sexual well-being of patients undergoing surgery for hypospadias in childhood.Peer reviewe
Teachers’ perceptions of multilingual and language-aware practices in foreign language education in Finland
No full textThis study examines teachers’ perceptions of multilingual and language-aware practices in foreign language education in Finland. The Finnish national core curricula at various educational levels recognise the vital role of multilingual and language-aware pedagogical approaches in advancing social justice by promoting equal learning opportunities for all students, and enhancing versatile language skills that are essential for communication in a globalised world. As teachers are important language policy implementers and their views affect the way they interpret and implement these policies, it is important to examine their perceptions. The data used in this study comprise a survey (n = 550) and focus group interviews of foreign language teachers (n = 20) from primary to adult education. The datasets were analysed using both descriptive statistics and qualitative thematic analysis. The findings show that many teachers believed that multilingual and language aware practices, such as cross-linguistic comparison and attention to linguistic form and function, were beneficial in enhancing their students’ learning. However, teachers expressed uncertainty about the implementation of truly inclusive multilingual practices. This suggests a need for more systematic support for teachers through tailored training and the provision of ready-to-use pedagogical materials.Peer reviewe
