Prevalence and risk factors of bovine Fascioliasis in Northeastern Peru
Bovine fascioliasis in Peru is highly prevalent in almost all regions; however, there are few studies about its prevalence in the region of Amazonas. This research aimed to determine the prevalence and risk factors associated with fascioliasis from four livestock basins in the Amazonas region. A total of 941 bovine feces samples were analyzed and a prevalence of 52% was found. The highest prevalence was registered in females (53.9%), crossbred (58.6%), and producers with less than 50 animals (54.40%). The highest risk factor was for Brown Swiss (2.1), crossbreeds (2.4), heifer (4.1), females (1.4), and bovine that drinks water from streams (2.5) and waterhole (2.4). With the principal component analysis, 5 groups were identified, where the first explains that the area of the farm and the number of animals are related to the prevalence of fascioliasis. Group five indicated a relationship between the drinking water source and the breeds with the highest prevalence of fascioliasis. The results show that there are high prevalence and risk factors that affect livestock productivity and welfare. For this reason, there is a need to improve veterinary and animal health support, as well as training in livestock management, providing adequate sources of nutrition, and improving drug administration

Harvest index is a key trait for screening drought-tolerant potato genotypes (Solanum tuberosum)
Drought stress is a significant constraint that affects the yield of almost all major crops. Its impact is expected to worsen due to global climate change and human population expansion. Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is the third most important food crop worldwide, but it is highly susceptible to drought stress. In order to understand the effects of drought stress on yield and identify traits for selecting drought-tolerant potato genotypes, we evaluated the response of a range of agronomic and physiological traits in 15 potato genotypes under well-watered (WW) and water deficit (WD) conditions. The harvest index (HI) was found to have a high plot-based heritability (0.98), indicating that it can be used for the indirect selection of drought-tolerant genotypes. In contrast, SPAD was sensitive to detecting early drought stress in potatoes. Drought-tolerant genotypes, including CIP392797.22 (UNICA), CIP397077.16, CIP398190.89, CIP398208.219, and CIP398208.620, were able to allocate limited water towards tuber production rather than biomass. These genotypes showed high tuber production under WW conditions and increased photosynthetic activity and water use efficiency under WD conditions

Colección Nacional de Achiote del Banco de Germoplasma del INIA
La Colección Nacional de Achiote del Banco de Germoplasma del INIA conserva accesiones que han sido colectadas en 07 regiones del Perú (Cusco, Huánuco, Junín, Loreto, Pasco, San Martín y Ucayali). También se cuenta con accesiones internacionales provenientes de Colombia, Costa Rica y Guatemala. La presente hoja divulgativa se ha desarrollado en el marco del Proyecto N°2480490: Mejoramiento de los servicios de investigación en la caracterización de los recursos genéticos de la Agrobiodiversidad en 17 departamentos del Perú
Ma$ Banano: an app to leverage data from smallholder organic export banana for continual improvement
The export banana sector depends on weekly data to ensure that a perishable fruit reaches distant consumers regularly, meeting quality and ripeness standards. Emerging organic and Fairtrade consumers have offered a window to small growers and their associations in dry tropical regions to export bananas, although with increased data demands to document production practices. A survey among small growers and their associations in Dominican Republic, Peru and Ecuador showed that data are collected to ensure that contracted containers meet certification requirements primarily in paper forms, checklists, farm visits and phone calls. Data are not managed and analyzed systematically to improve production efficiency and profitability or risk reduction. FONTAGRO financed the development of an app for data collection and analysis for small growers and their organizations as a key strategy to scale promising innovations to reduce banana rejects from red rust and increase productivity through soil health. Ma$ Banano, the name of the app, operates off-line with data uploaded opportunely to a central server. Multiple users linked to production and fruit processing in each banana farm can enter data depending on their work responsibilities. Data entry is organized in 2 sections aligned with the promising innovations. For red rust, modules capture 1) bagging efficiency and timeliness and application of repellents and insecticides, and 2) quantification of rejects and their causes at processing. For soil health, modules receive data on 1) mat density ha‑1, 2) plant vigor, 3) residue and fertilizer management and placement, 4) roots and soil biological, physical and chemical parameters, and 5) nutrient balance. Two initial modules serve to identify the farm and field and to capture weekly reporting of flagged and harvested bunches and boxes processed. A routine of app use begins with an assessment using all modules. Monthly follow-up scouting of key practices and general quarterly monitoring orient continual improvement. Data reports are generated through a web interface for individual growers and associations. The overall base with data privacy mechanisms in place will be available for big-data research

Genotyping-by-sequencing reveals a high number and quality of single nucleotide polymorphisms in guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) from the Peruvian Andes
Guinea pigs are a major source of animal protein for Peruvian Andean families. Despite the economic and cultural relevance of guinea pigs, their genomic characterization has been scarcely addressed. Genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS) has emerged as an affordable alternative to genotyping of livestock and native animals. Here, we report the use of GBS for single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) discovery of traditionally raised guinea pigs from six regions of the Peruvian Andes and one group of breeding animals. The paired-end (2 × 150 bp) sequencing of 40 guinea pig DNA samples generated a mean of 6.4 million high-quality sequencing reads per sample. We obtained an average sequencing depth of 10× with an 88.5% mapping rate to the Cavia porcellus reference genome. A total of 279 965 SNPs (102 SNPs/Mbp) were identified after variant calling and quality filtering. Based on this SNP set, we assessed the genetic diversity and distance within our selected guinea pig populations. An overall average minor allele frequency of 0.13, an observed heterozygosity of 0.31, an expected heterozygosity of 0.35, and an F-value of 0.1 were obtained, while the SNP-based neighbor-joining tree suggests a closer genetic relationship between individuals from geographically close locations. We showed that GBS is a cost-effective tool for SNP discovery and genetic characterization of Peruvian guinea pig populations. Therefore, it may be considered as a suitable and affordable tool for genomic characterization of poorly studied native animal species
