Sammenlignende laboratorieprøvninger (SLP) – Analyse av ferskvann. SLP 2230
Prosjektleder/Hovedforfatter Tina BryntesenUnder en sammenliknende laboratorieprøving (SLP) gjennomført i januar – april 2022 bestemte 36 laboratorier pH, konduktivitet, turbiditet, farge, UV-absorpsjon, natrium, kalium, kalsium, magnesium, hardhet, alkalitet, klorid, sulfat, fluorid, totalt organisk karbon, kjemisk oksygenforbruk (CODMn), fosfat, totalfosfor, ammonium, nitrat, totalnitrogen, aluminium, bly, jern, kadmium, kobber, krom, mangan, nikkel, sink, antimon og arsen i vann.
Seasonal forecasting of lake water quality and algal bloom risk using a continuous Gaussian Bayesian network
Freshwater management is challenging, and advance warning that poor water quality was likely, a season ahead, could allow for preventative measures to be put in place. To this end, we developed a Bayesian network (BN) for seasonal lake water quality prediction. BNs have become popular in recent years, but the vast majority are discrete. Here, we developed a Gaussian Bayesian network (GBN), a simple class of continuous BN. The aim was to forecast, in spring, mean total phosphorus (TP) and chlorophyll a (chl a) concentration, mean water colour, and maximum cyanobacteria biovolume for the upcoming growing season (May–October) in Vansjø, a shallow nutrient-rich lake in southeastern Norway. To develop the model, we first identified controls on interannual variability in seasonally aggregated water quality. These variables were then included in a GBN, and conditional probability densities were fit using observations (≤39 years). GBN predictions had R2 values of 0.37 (chl a) to 0.75 (colour) and classification errors of 32 % (TP) to 17 % (cyanobacteria). For all but lake colour, including weather variables did not improve the predictive performance (assessed through cross-validation). Overall, we found the GBN approach to be well suited to seasonal water quality forecasting. It was straightforward to produce probabilistic predictions, including the probability of exceeding management-relevant thresholds. The GBN could be sensibly parameterised using only the observed data, despite the small dataset. Developing a comparable discrete BN was much more subjective and time-consuming. Although low interannual variability and high temporal autocorrelation in the study lake meant the GBN performed only slightly better than a seasonal naïve forecast (where the forecasted value is simply the value observed the previous growing season), we believe that the forecasting approach presented here could be particularly useful in areas with higher sensitivity to catchment nutrient delivery and seasonal climate and for forecasting at shorter (daily or monthly) timescales. Despite the parametric constraints of GBNs, their simplicity, together with the relative accessibility of BN software with GBN handling, means they are a good first choice for BN development with continuous variables.publishedVersio
Exploring dynamics of riverine phosphorus exports under future climate change using a process-based catchment model
Embargo until 31 December 2023.A quantitative understanding of riverine phosphorus (P) export in response to shifts in anthropogenic inputs, terrestrial retention, and climate is important for developing mitigation measures at a watershed scale. In this study, we simulated a decadal change in the riverine P export in a human-dominated watershed from a cold climatic region located in Northeast Asia. A process-based catchment model nested within a delicate land P module was applied to simulate the dynamics of P retentions and its exports in the watershed. We found that the terrestrial P retention capacities declined for 2008–2017, and the decline rates would accelerate under three representative concentration pathways (i.e. RCP2.6, RCP4.5 and RCP8.5). The P released from the diffused source and historical legacy could partly offset the effort through point-source P reduction by the improved wastewater treatments. Climate changes (e.g., duration and frequency of extreme rainfall event) could accelerate P deliveries from the P legacy retained in soils. We suggest that a long-term watershed P management strategy should be targeted to reduce historical P legacy input into river rather than solely focusing on the short-term changes in the riverine P concentration.acceptedVersio
ESPIAL - Data review and evaluation of historical data (WP1)
Prosjektleder Ailbhe MackenThe present report details the outcome of work package 1 of ESPIAL, with the aim of compiling the historical data from previous surveys at the aluminium sites in a common database and further to analyse the data. A graphical data displaying tool was developed as a custom interactive tool for data visualisations and was designed to be intuitive and user friendly. The main outcomes and findings of this work package can be summarized as follows: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) constitute most data in the database; There is a decent amount of data on sediment samples in the data base, however these do not form time series; Most time series available in the data base are on blue mussel from Sunndal and northern horsemussel from Årdal; Most time series show a declining tendency; All statistically significant PAH time trends show declining concentrations; The database is likely not complete, and more data could be available; The graphical data displaying tool is a promising aid for instant insight in concentrations and time series of different analytes in environmental samples, historically collected in the vicinity of the smelters; The graphical data displaying tool makes it possible to view concentrations and trends in relation to the EQSs, giving insight in chemical status and sites of interest, in terms of possible need of remedial action or natural recovery.Aluminiumindustriens Miljøsekretariat (AMS)publishedVersio

Weight of evidence tools in the prediction of acute fish toxicity
Embargo until 20 January 2023Acute fish toxicity (AFT) is a key endpoint in nearly all regulatory implementations of environmental hazard assessments of chemicals globally. Although it is an early tier assay, the AFT assay is complex and uses many juvenile fish each year for the registration and assessment of chemicals. Thus, it is imperative to seek animal alternative approaches to replace or reduce animal use for environmental hazard assessments. A Bayesian Network (BN) model has been developed that brings together a suite of lines of evidence (LoEs) to produce a probabilistic estimate of AFT without the testing of additional juvenile fish. Lines of evidence include chemical descriptors, mode of action (MoA) assignment, knowledge of algal and daphnid acute toxicity, and animal alternative assays such as fish embryo tests and in vitro fish assays (e.g., gill cytotoxicity). The effort also includes retrieval, assessment, and curation of quality acute fish toxicity data because these act as the baseline of comparison with model outputs. An ideal outcome of this effort would be to have global applicability, acceptance and uptake, relevance to predominant fish species used in chemical assessments, be expandable to allow incorporation of future knowledge, and data to be publicly available. The BN model can be conceived as having incorporated principles of tiered assessment and whose outcomes will be directed by the available evidence in combination with prior information. We demonstrate that, as additional evidence is included in the prediction of a given chemical's ecotoxicity profile, both the accuracy and the precision of the predicted AFT can increase. Ultimately an improved environmental hazard assessment will be achieved.acceptedVersio
Tiltaksrettet overvåking i Tista og Iddefjorden for Norske Skog Saugbrugs AS i 2020/2021
One planet: one health. A call to support the initiative on a global science–policy body on chemicals and waste
The chemical pollution crisis severely threatens human and environmental health globally. To tackle this challenge the establishment of an overarching international science–policy body has recently been suggested. We strongly support this initiative based on the awareness that humanity has already likely left the safe operating space within planetary boundaries for novel entities including chemical pollution. Immediate action is essential and needs to be informed by sound scientific knowledge and data compiled and critically evaluated by an overarching science–policy interface body. Major challenges for such a body are (i) to foster global knowledge production on exposure, impacts and governance going beyond data-rich regions (e.g., Europe and North America), (ii) to cover the entirety of hazardous chemicals, mixtures and wastes, (iii) to follow a one-health perspective considering the risks posed by chemicals and waste on ecosystem and human health, and (iv) to strive for solution-oriented assessments based on systems thinking. Based on multiple evidence on urgent action on a global scale, we call scientists and practitioners to mobilize their scientific networks and to intensify science–policy interaction with national governments to support the negotiations on the establishment of an intergovernmental body based on scientific knowledge explaining the anticipated benefit for human and environmental health.publishedVersio
