Not AvailablePurpose – The purpose of this paper was to study the color change kinetics of lac dye in response to aldehydes, carbon dioxide and other food
spoilage metabolites for its potential application in intelligent food packaging.
Design/methodology/approach – UV–Vis spectroscopy was used to study the color change of dye solution. Ratio of absorbance of dye solution at
528 nm (peak of ionized form) to absorbance at 488 nm (peak of unionized form) was used to study the color change. Color change kinetics was
studied in terms of change in absorbance ratio (A528/A488) with time using zero and first-order reaction kinetics. Lac dye-based indicator was
prepared to validate the result of study for monitoring quality of strawberries.
Findings – Lac dye was orange-red in acidic medium and purple in alkaline medium. Color change of dye in response to benzaldehyde followed
zero-order reaction kinetics, whereas for carbon dioxide first-order model was found best. No color change of dye solution was observed for
alcohols, ketones and sulfur compounds. In the validation part, the color of the indicator label changed from purple to orange when the strawberries
spoiled.
Originality/value – The study expands application area for lac dye as sensing reagent in intelligent food packaging for spoilage or ripeness
detection of fruits and vegetables.Not Availabl

Not AvailableAn acute toxicity study of imidacloprid on the larval health and metamorphosis of the giant freshwater prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii larvae were carried out during the months of January–August 2021 at the aquatic animal raring and experimenting facility in the Cochin University of Science and Technology, Kerala, India. Imidacloprid is a broad-spectrum neonicotinoid insecticide used against sucking pests infecting agricultural crops as both contact poison and stomach poison. The present study investigated the adverse effects of imidacloprid on the survival rate, feeding behaviour, larval quality and incidence of metamorphosis in Macrobrachium rosenbergii larvae. The 48 h median lethal concentrations (LC50 values) and safe concentration of imidacloprid determined for different larval stages (Zoea I–XI) of M. rosenbergii ranged between 0.000635–0.001388 mg l-1 and 0.000055–0.000191 mg l-1, respectively. Larvae exposed to imidacloprid for 48 h showed decrease in survival rate with increase in concentration of imidacloprid. The results of larval condition index (LCI) that indicates the larval quality showed that imidacloprid reduced the larval health significantly (p<0.05) at high concentrations and is potent to delay the incidence of metamorphosis. The feeding rate of larvae exposed to different concentrations of imidacloprid were found to be significantly (p<0.05) reduced due to paralytic effect of imidacloprid. The present work provides relevant data beneficial for the risk assessment of imidacloprid in M. rosenbergii.Not Availabl

were fitted to the secondary data on area under
culture and production of different species cultured
crustaceans viz: Tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon),
White leg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) and Scampi
(Macrobracium rosenbergii) to estimate the trend
growth rate. Linear regression models like simple
and polynomial models and non-linear models like
Monomolecular, Logistic and Gompertz models
were fitted to the data on total area under culture
(AUC) and total production (P) as well as selected
species wise shrimp culture and production using
ordinary least square (OLS) method. Logistic model
was found to be the best fitted model for total AUC
and shrimp production. The estimated growth rate
of total AUC was 0.138 ha/ year and total production
was 0.379 tonnes/year. Gompertz model was the best
fitted model for both AUC and production data of
white leg shrimp, and cubic model was the best
fitted model for AUC and production of Tiger
shrimp and Scampi. In general, it was observed that
the total area under culture and shrimp production
in India is increasing. The introduction of White leg
shrimp contributed significantly to the increase in
total AUC and production of Shrimp in India. Based
on the estimated carrying capacity of AUC and
production of total shrimp and White leg shrimp
indicated that there is further potential to increase

Food-based approach is a sustainable and cost-effective option to counter micronutrient malnutrition in public health particularly in poor communities. The present study aimed to develop F1 hybrids from early-and mid-maturity groups of Indian cauliflower rich in essential dietary nutrients.
Materials and methods
Cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) based 50 F1 hybrids (10 CMS lines × 5 testers) from early-maturity group and 20 F1 crosses (5 CMS lines × 4 testers) from mid-maturity group were generated in line × tester mating design and evaluated in randomized block design in respective maturity groups in 2020–21. Eight dietary minerals content were analysed in curd portion using atomic absorbance spectrophotometer and sulphur by barium sulphate turbidimetry method.
Results
The CMS lines, fertile inbred lines and F1 crosses from both maturity groups showed significant variation in minerals content. Best combiners for minerals in early group were CMS 999–41–5 (Fe, Mn, Mg, Ca, S) and CMS 4348–41–5 (Zn, Na) in CMS lines while DC 98–2 (Cu, Ca) and DC 67 (Zn, Mn, Na) among the testers. In mid group, CMS 8401 (Fe, Na, Ca, K) and CMS 1944–309 (Zn, S) CMS lines and DC 401 (Fe, S, K) and DC 476 (Cu, Mn, Na) testers were good combiners. The best heterotic hybrids in early group were CEH35 for Fe, CEH27 for Zn and Na, CEH38 for Cu and Mn and CEH43 for Ca. In mid group, CMH2 was most heterotic for Fe and Mn and CMH4 for Ca content.Not Availabl
