Air pollution inequality and its temporal trends in Nordic countries
The demand for research on air pollution inequality in Nordic countries is rising with the growing evidence of adverse health effects. We examined socio-economic and ethnic disparities in air pollution exposure from 1990 to 2016. Results revealed that exposure to PM2.5 and NO2 was generally higher in municipalities with higher income, education and immigrant populations. Disparities mostly decreased over time, benefiting almost all groups. But, ozone exposure increased in many regions. The findings highlight the need for attention to rising ozone levels and disproportionate exposure of immigrants.publishedVersio
Major tunnel valleys and sedimentation changes document extensive Early Pleistocene glaciations of the Barents Sea
Sedimentary records of Early Pleistocene (~2.6–0.8 Ma) glaciations are sparse on shelves, yet trough mouth fans on adjacent continental slopes provide a continuous record of ice-sheet and climate development throughout the Quaternary. Here, we interpret high-quality 3D seismic reflection data combined with borehole and chronostratigraphic information from a shelf-slope setting in the southwestern Barents Sea to study meltwater and sediment inputs to the deep ocean, focusing on the onset of Pleistocene glaciations. Sandy deposits were brought to the slopes of the high-latitude Bear Island Fan by a preglacial contourite-turbidite system from ⁓2.6–2.4 Ma. Muddy glacigenic debris flows document the first shelf-edge glaciation at ⁓2.4 Ma. From 1.78–0.78 Ma, muddy turbidity-current- and debris-flow-derived sediments were delivered from shelf to slope via six tunnel valleys measuring up to 12 km in width and 200 m in depth. These tunnel valleys and associated downslope deposits formed during the 41-kyr climate cycles of the Early Pleistocene, and evidence abundant channelized, meltwater discharges from these glaciations. Following the mid-Pleistocene transition to 100-kyr cycles, a change in the style of glaciation is suggested by a change in landform and facies associations consistent with a reduced meltwater contribution. Microplastics in faeces of European shags Gulosus aristotelis in central Norway
Plastic pollution is an increasing problem in the marine environment, and microplastics are frequently ingested by wildlife, including seabirds. Faeces are an increasingly used matrix to quantify egested microplastics. We investigated microplastics in 36 faeces samples from chicks of European shags (Gulosus aristotelis) sampled at Sklinna, central Norway in 2021. Small particles <300 μm (62 %) dominated the material. Out of 465 particles measured with Raman spectroscopy, 32 were identified as microplastics (21 fragments, 4 fibres). 69.4 % of faecal samples contained microplastics, with on average 17 microplastic particles per g faeces dry weight. Sixteen of the 36 samples originated from siblings sampled within the same hour, and plastic loads of these samples were more similar to each other compared to those from other individuals. This suggests that a sample from one chick is representative for all siblings at a given moment in time and proofs parental transfer of MP.
