Dynamic Performance of CLT Floors in the Context of Eurocode 5 Gen. II
As modern timber products are increasingly used in large and complex structures, updated design standards have become essential. The new Generation II of Eurocode 5 (EC5 Gen. II) addresses this need by incorporating engineered wood products like cross-laminated timber (CLT) and emphasizing structural dynamics such as vibration performance and floor stiffness. This thesis examines CLT floor vibrations using laboratory tests, numerical simulations and analytical methods in the context of EC5 Gen. II.
This thesis focuses on CLT floors with two-sided support, both with and without screws. The study explores how different excitation methods affect dynamic properties such as frequency, damping ratio, mode shapes, mode order and number of modes identified. And evaluates the correlation between analytical, experimental and numerical evaluations. A parametric study further investigates the influence of span length, walking frequency and excitation path on floors response.
Findings show that heel-drop tests induce the highest damping due to added human mass and energy absorption, while screw reinforcement increases modal frequencies through added stiffness. Acceleration response is significantly affected by span length and walking frequency, with longer spans and higher pacing rates resulting in greater dynamic response. The analytical method in EC5 Gen. II predicts fundamental frequency reliably. But the calculation for root mean square acceleration tends to overestimate or underestimate acceleration values, depending on assumptions like the factor k_res, which takes the higher modes into account. This thesis highlights the need for refined parameters in the EC5 methodology and suggests that realistic input values, combined with numerical validation, are essential for accurate vibration assessment of CLT floors
Resultatene viser generelt høy trivsel i begge bygg.
This study investigates how employees experience indoor environment and well-being in office buildings made of wood, based on the biophilia hypothesis and environmental psychology theories. The focus is on how natural materials like wood affect psychological well-being, as well as how different dimensions of nature perception (Nature Relatedness Scale, NRS) and mental health (WHO5, GAD-7) relate to the experience of the indoor environment at work.
The data is based on a post-occupancy evaluation sent to employees in two Norwegian office buildings with wood-based construction: HasleTre in Oslo and Mjøsbrygga in Brumunddal. A total of 64 respondents participated. The survey included both standardized and customized scales to measure well-being, material experience, mental and physical health, and the individual's connection to nature.
The results generally show high levels of well-being in both buildings. Mjøsbrygga scored slightly higher than HasleTre, especially in relation to noise and privacy, which aligns with differences in office layouts. At the same time, both buildings were described as warm, natural, and aesthetically pleasing. Clear correlations were found between higher well-being and better mental health (higher WHO5, lower GAD-7), but not between well-being and NRS scores. This suggests that well-being in wooden buildings is more influenced by office design and user-friendliness than by the individual's relationship to nature.
Access to a view of green spaces had a weak positive effect on building satisfaction but did not affect mental health or specific satisfaction assessments of the office space. Material evaluations indicated that wood contributes to a sense of calm, warmth, and aesthetics, thus supporting the idea that natural elements can have health-promoting properties. However, the study lacked a control building made of other materials, which limits generalizability.
The study concludes that wooden buildings provide a good foundation for well-being, but well-being is not necessarily explained by nature connectedness alone. Design choices, the work environment, and psychological factors must be considered holistically. The study contributes a new measurement tool and recommends further research with larger samples and comparison buildings for more precise conclusions
The school garden has a huge potential and with the initiative of “Økologisk Norge” the school garden has received great attention in recent years. The interdisciplinary topic “Public Health and Life Skills” has become a part of the core curriculum in Norwegians schools and is important for health-promotion. To enable people to take control of one's own life and at the same time improve one's own health, the state of children’s and adolescents’ health condition is important. There are different impacts that affect our health, and the environment we find ourselves in can be decisive. There is a negative development in learning, well-being and motivation in schools and the government wants to facilitate a more practical school. The aim of this thesis was to examine the school garden as a health-promoting arena for children and adolescents, and how the school garden successfully can be operated.
The study used a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. In the thesis the phenomenon “school garden” was investigated. Seven semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted, involving people’s experiences with the school gardens as a health-promoting arena for children and adolescents from age 6 - 15 years. The data collection was analysed with inspiration from thematic analysis. From the analysis it was identified four main themes, 1. What has to be present in the school garden. The first theme is about the conditions that has to be present for a successful operation for it to be a good place to be for children and adolescents, 2. An alternative arena, which suggests that the school garden can be a multifunctional arena, 3. Importance for health, which is about the different effects on the health and well-being of children and adolescents, and 4. Life skills, which is about the various prerequisites that are important for learning to manage one's own life.
School gardens can promote health and life skills in children and adolescents by giving them a good relationship with food, increase physical activity, and improve mental health. It can build social relationships and the feeling of belonging, well-being and self-efficacy. School gardens can be especially important for children and adolescents with various challenges. For a successful operation, teacher's commitment and competence is crucial, as well as good planning, support from management and cooperation with other actors
Resultatene viste at over halvparten av redoksmålingene lå under terskelverdien for egent habitat for laksefisk (≥ 400 mV).
The oxygen content of streambed substrates is critical for the survival, growth, and development of salmonid eggs. In many watercourses, however, oxygen availability has been reduced due to eutrophication and sedimentation of the substrate, often as a result of agricultural activity. This also applies to the Verdal watershed in Trøndelag. The focus area of this study, where long-term anthropogenic impacts have degraded habitat quality. The presence of riparian vegetation is known to buffer such effects and improve habitat conditions.
Based on this, seven streams of the Verdal watershed were surveyed between August 29 and September 3, 2024, with the aim of assessing how local habitat, as well as upstream mesohabitat and riparian zones, affect oxygen condition in the substrate, and what redox potential reveals about habitat quality. Oxygen levels were assessed by measuring redox potential at 18 stations across the seven studied streams. Habitat variables were recorded at each station during the same period and were used to classify stations as either “With” or “Without” riparian vegetation. Riparian conditions were mapped over the same time frame, from each stream’s outlet to approximately 100 meters upstream of the last station, while mesohabitat was surveyed over the same extent from November 5-7, 2024. Habitat variables were included in a principal component analysis (PCA) to assess covariation and generate independent components used as covariates in subsequent analyses. Data on riparian zones and mesohabitat were also used to develop upstream variables for additional analysis.
The results showed that more than half of the redox measurements were below the threshold for suitable habitat for salmonids (≥ 400 mV). Stations with riparian vegetation had a higher proportion of suitable and moderately suitable measurements (300-399 mV), while stations without had a larger proportion of unsuitable values (<300 mV). The effect of the studied variables on redox potential was analyzed using linear models. Variables related to riparian vegetation and course woody derbies (PC1), water depth and fine sediment (PC3), along with 200 m upstream gradient and proportion of flowing water (GR200 and FR200), explained redox variation most effectively trough a significant four-way interaction. The model explained 39 % of the total variation in redox potential, with approximately 34 % explained by random effects and only 6 % by fixed variables. This likely reflects methodological limitations and the absence of key explanatory variables.
Overall, the findings indicate that the examined variables have some influence on redox potential in the substrate, though this influence is limited. Future studies are recommended to employ finer-resolution methods and a broader range of environmental variables to better understand the drivers of redox variations and habitat quality in stream ecosystems
This master's thesis explores the social acceptance of blue hydrogen, with a particular emphasis on market acceptance. Blue hydrogen is produced from natural gas with carbon capture and storage (CCS), and is described in the EU’s hydrogen strategy as a transitional solution for scaling up the hydrogen market until green hydrogen becomes dominant. The thesis contributes to CICERO’s NOREGRET research project, aiming to identify barriers to the development of a blue hydrogen market from a Norwegian-European perspective.
Using a qualitative method based on semi-structured interviews with actors in the Norwegian hydrogen sector, the study investigates which factors influence market acceptance. The theoretical framework draws on models developed by Wüstenhagen et al. (2007) and Sovacool & Ratan (2012), as well as recent contributions that highlight social acceptance as a dynamic process shaped by scale, time, and power relations.
Findings indicate that the market acceptance of blue hydrogen is limited due to low demand, price uncertainty, and weak or unclear policy frameworks. Interviewees point out that current support schemes in Norway are insufficient to initiate large-scale projects, and that it is challenging to be a first mover in an immature market. At the same time, the EU is increasingly seen to favour green hydrogen, raising questions about the long-term viability of blue hydrogen. Nevertheless, many interviewees emphasize the need for both blue and green hydrogen to achieve climate goals. The current geopolitical situation is also mentioned as a barrier, as it complicates long-term planning and investment in the hydrogen sector.
The thesis concludes that market acceptance of blue hydrogen is currently weak, primarily due to structural and political barriers. Social acceptance of blue hydrogen should be understood as a multidimensional and evolving process, and future research should examine institutional frameworks, actor roles, and the interaction between different governance levels
Preterm infants have an elevated risk of developing sepsis, also known as blood poisoning, due to their underdeveloped immune systems. Sepsis can have serious consequences if not diagnosed and treated early. Diagnosis in premature infants is challenging due to the lack of clear criteria. Untargeted metabolic analyses can provide insight into the biochemical processes associated with various health conditions, such as sepsis. This is done by analyzing the level and presence of various chemical compounds in metabolic samples. To manage the large and complex datasets from untargeted metabolic analyses, tools are needed that can both process and analyze the data. Below is a description of the thesis's main research question.
How can data-driven methods serve as an aid in metabolic data and health data, and how does this relate to interdisciplinary collaboration? Can techniques for noise reduction, variable selection, and machine learning algorithms be used to identify metabolites/chemical compounds that are associated with sepsis?
CRISP-DM, Cross Industry Process for Data Mining, are used as the main methodological framework in this thesis. CRISP-DM is a standardized process that provide a structured approach towards projects which revolves around the analyzation of large datasets. In this thesis, a dataset containing health data from premature infants has been used, which includes test results from metabolic analyses of blood samples.
One of the key findings during the project period is that data analysis is an effective tool for detecting anomalies in health and metabolic data. Most of the anomalies that were discovered could not have been detected or handled without the knowledge of a clinician and the person responsible for the metabolic analysis. This highlights the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration to improve data quality.
The dataset used contains more variables than observations, making it necessary to employ preprocessing techniques to reduce complexity and help machine learning algorithms find underlying patterns. In this thesis, various techniques for scaling, noise reduction, and variable selection were tested. The predictive performance of various machine learning models was evaluated on datasets with and without preprocessing to assess the effect of these techniques. The results suggest that the preprocessed datasets performed better on some models, especially those based on logistic regression.
This improvement in predictive performance may suggest that the preprocessing techniques may have highlighted chemical compounds relevant to sepsis. However, this is only an indication, as final evaluation requires biological validation.
There is still uncertainty regarding the data quality, which requires further investigation in collaboration with individuals who have knowledge of the dataset and the metabolic analysis method. All tested models show signs of overfitting, and it is possible that other combinations of preprocessing techniques could yield better results than those achieved in this thesis. A more systematic testing of different preprocessing techniques would therefore be beneficial
Studiet tar utgangspunkt i tre ulike steder sentralt i Oslo.
Årstidsforandringene gir endringer i kulør.
The thesis explores color changes due to changing conditions in new landscape architecture through hand drawing and photography. The study is based on three different locations in central Oslo. The locations are observed from September to May with a focus on how seasonal variations and different weather conditions affect the appearance of surfaces in color and color nuances.
The approach is based on principles from Research by design. Observations and presence at the locations create the basis for documentation of the color changes. This is done through photography and notation, which further creates the basis for digital work with photos and work with hand drawings. The creative methods contribute to raising awareness of the color changes, and to highlighting and representing the influence of colors on the character of the place and what the technical differences are.
Different weather conditions and different light, give color changes in saturation, temperature and value. The changes of the seasons give changes in color. Together, these give different moods to the locations in the city, among other things through changes in contrast and harmony.
The assignment is a contribution to raising awareness about the effect of the colors we use in landscape architecture. In addition, it provides inspiration and knowledge about how colors can be used consciously in the future
The forest’s response to future climate change is uncertain. Tree phenology is highly affected by climate signals and can therefore be a good indicator of forests response to change. The knowledge about occurrences such as onset of wood formation and budburst, and the connection between them, might indicate how forests in the future will respond.
I have studied the relationship between the onset of primary growth (budburst) and secondary growth (radial growth) in spruce (Picea abiea) and birch (Betula pendula) during spring 2024 in Nordskogen, Ås municipality, Norway. The bud development was observed weekly using binoculars, and radial growth was measured every tenth minute by dendrometers. I compared data from the dendrometers with microscopy tests to evaluate how accurately the dendrometers could predict the onset of secondary growth. The microscopy tests were produced based on the weekly microcores taken from five spruce trees.
There were differences between spruce and birch in both bud development and time difference between budburst and onset of radial growth. In spruce trees, I found that primary growth started between one and ten days before the secondary growth. The primary and secondary phenology in spruce is relatively synchronized. Birch started primary growth 17-22 days before secondary growth. Bud development started earlier and occurred faster in birch compared to spruce.
Dendrometer measurements could predict the onset of wood formation better when onset was set to the 5% radial increment threshold compared to the zero micrometres threshold. To my knowledge, this is the only study that has compared the onset of wood formation with microcores and dendrometers in spruce, while also studying its link to primary growth. In summary, the study shows that onset of primary and secondary growth is more synchronized in spruce than in birch, and that dendrometers have the potential to predict onset of secondary growth in spruce
Dynamikken i regionale boligmarkeder : emner : kvalitetsheterogenitet, sortering og boligkjøpekraft
There are several reasons why housing markets are different from other economic markets. Housing markets are fundamentally local. The dynamics of these markets are significantly influenced by factors that vary spatially, such as local economic activity, regional policies, and the level of amenities. This is largely attributed to the immobility of houses, unlike many other goods. While housing markets are known to be aligned with macroeconomic factors like interest rates and local incomes, the microeconomic aspects of housing have become increasingly relevant in housing market research. Another prominent feature is that houses are vastly heterogeneous in their qualities, and many aspects of this quality is unobserved in research and economic models. Furthermore, housing markets primarily function as search markets, with households typically making choices based on housing quality rather than quantity.
This thesis addresses some of these aspects of housing markets. It measures the renovation quality of transacted houses and investigates whether households search more intensively for low-quality housing during booms. It also explores whether households sort differently by income in amenity-rich and amenity-poor cities compared to the larger urban area. Market frictions and fluctuations in buyer-seller ratios, location amenities, and policy measures can all contribute to the housing market equilibrium and the sorting of households. Moreover, housing affordability issues has become a main policy objective in many countries struggling with soaring housing prices.
Paper I aims to measure the renovation level of houses transacted using real estate listings and prospectuses in urban housing markets and estimate the market premium of renovation. We find a significant positive premium of 5-7 percent for renovated dwellings and a negative premium of 9-10 percent for unmaintained dwellings. Interestingly, these premiums vary significantly over time, exhibiting a counter-cyclical effect. Ignoring renovation information biases short-term house price growth estimates downward, a crucial insight for those monitoring housing market trends.
Building on this, Paper II studies ripples of housing search between different housing quality tiers during booms and busts. Overall, these findings point to a trade-off between quality and location. To maintain a better location quality, more buyers may be willing to reduce unit quality. Since most cities' housing markets are complex systems with spatial patterning of housing qualities and price levels, our findings support that variations in the demand for quality during booms and busts is a fundamental driver of variations in house price growth within and across neighborhoods and housing quality tiers.
Paper III investigates household location choices by income within city regions.
Our approach emphasizes the importance of location quality differences and amenity concentration for hypotheses about the income-distance gradient.
Although their concentration may be related in a complex way to other fundamental drivers, our findings reinforce the importance of amenities for household location choice. In line with theory, we estimate an inverse relationship between the degree of amenity-superiority of the city center and the income - distance gradient. Our estimates also support that more households respond by relocating to the city edge in response to increased access to public transportation and lower taxes at the city edges. These insights have significant implications for the amenity-based sorting literature and local urban planning.
Finally, Paper IV construct standardized measures for the housing affordability of representative first-time buyers in regional housing markets. This method provides multiple gains compared to simpler measures that are often used, such as price-income rates, and is also suited to regular updates. It also compares the estimates to actual first-time purchases in these markets. These results suggest that housing affordability has significantly decreased over the last decade, with many young people stretching their finances to enter the market.OBOSpublishedVersio
Quantitative and qualitative analysis of lipids in claws of Edible crab (Cancer Pagurus) using GC-orbitrap MS
The purpose of this study was to identify and quantify the different lipids in the claws of
edible crab (Cancer Pagurus) and measure the amount of the heavy metals; Arsenic (As),
Lead (Pb), Mercury (Hg) and Cadmium (Cd).
The edible crab is one of the most common crabs for consumption in Norway, with 5000
tonnes being harvested annually. While some are eaten locally, others are sold
internationally.
The lipids were extracted from the claw muscle using Folch solution. The fat percentage was
determined. A total lipid profile was created and a fractionation of the lipids into neutral
lipids, free fatty acids and polar lipids were done using solid phase extraction. The fatty acids
in the lipid profile and fractionation were derivatized into FAMEs before being analyzed
using GC-orbitrap MS. The health indices AI, TI and n-6/n-3 were determined from the lipid
profile. A sample was sent to Eurofins for the quantification of the heavy metals by the use of
ICP-MS.
The fat percent of the crab claws was 0.436 ± 0.035 %.
The total lipid profile revealed that 15.28 % of the lipids were SFA, 36.57 % were MUFA
and 46.78 % were PUFA. 36.43 % of total fat was n-3 PUFA and 10.05 % was n-6 PUFA.
The AI was calculated to be 0.14, the TI was 0.11 and the n-6/n-3 was 0.28. The crab claws
also contained small amounts of cholesterol, furan fatty acids and branched fatty acids.
The fractionation revealed that 86.56% of the quantifiable lipids were PL, 10.62% was NL
and 2.82% were FFA. All of the quantifiable lipids of the FFA were SFA. The NL was the
only fraction with cholesterol. The NL also contained 38.48 % SFA, 28.42 % MUFA and
19.19 % PUFA. The PL contained the most PUFA with 55.28 % PUFA, 31.48 % MUFA and
13.24 % SFA. The PL fraction was also the only fraction containing furan fatty acids.
The metal analysis revealed that the claws contained 30 mg/kg As, <0.010 mg/kg Pb, 0.0033
mg/kg Cd and 0.078 mg/kg Hg. Comparison with regulations from the European Union
showed that the Pb, Cd and Hg were well under the max limit. There was no limit set for As,
probably because As is in the form of organic As when in seafood, which is not as toxic as
unorganic As
