Drawing in science has roots all the way back to the time of Aristoteles and gained its modern status with the drawings of Leonardo da Vinci. Throughout history, drawing has played a central role in the communication and understanding of science. Drawing is recognized as an integral aspect of the nature of science, serving as a tool to enhance students’ observational skills and their ability to visualize scientific phenomena. However, as everyday school life becomes increasingly digital, drawing is often neglected in favor of other learning strategies. In the autumn of 2024, the Norwegian government published a white paper that emphasized that drawing should be used more in schools, for example as a method in interdisciplinary work.
The purpose of this master's study is to explore the student’s experiences with drawing in science and biology, as well as to investigate how drawing can contribute to learning. Qualitative data has been collected from 13 high school students in public and Waldorf school. In the public school, data collection took place in Biology 1 and science class, while in Waldorf school, data was collected from a science class with first year students in high school.
The results from the interviews show that students experience drawing as contributing to learning through several factors: variety, improved memory, increased understanding, concretization of abstract phenomena, enhanced motivation, and better understanding. The analysis shows that there are both challenges and opportunities associated with the use of drawing, and that the teacher plays a key role in promoting drawing. The main challenges associated with using drawing in teaching are linked to several factors such as limited time, how drawing is integrated into lessons, digitalization and the use of artificial intelligence, school culture, the so-called “drawing crisis”, as well as creativity in teaching with drawing. Furthermore, the discussion highlights that the potential benefits of drawing include creating variation in the school day, allowing students to engage their creative side, and establishing an interdisciplinary space between the arts and sciences. Additionally, drawing provides opportunities to spend more time visualizing phenomena that may be difficult to grasp, and it can diversify the assessments. The teacher also plays a crucial role in shaping students’ attitudes toward drawing.
This master’s thesis concludes with three conditions for drawing to contribute to learning: 1. There must be adequate access to drawing tools for both students and teachers. 2. Teachers must prioritize drawing as an integral part of their teaching practice. 3. Time spent on drawing must be recognized as a legitimate and learning-promoting academic practice
Wild reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) in Norway are facing great challenges, including pressure from human disturbance from outdoor recreation. Multiple visitor management measures have been implemented to improve the situation for wild reindeer in Rondane Sør wild reindeer area. This study aims to better understand how implemented measures at Venabygdsfjellet in Rondane affect winter outdoor recreation and recreationists’ attitudes to different management measures. This case study combines observation with qualitative interviews. The observations are based on a previous study on outdoor recreation at Venabygdsfjellet by The Norwegian Institute for Nature Research (NINA) where recreationists’ routes are mapped and additional information about each group noted. The interviews (n=7) aimed to understand what knowledge informants had about wild reindeer and human recreation, as well as motivations for winter outdoor recreation and attitudes towards implemented and not implemented measures. This study uses the COM-B model to analyse behaviour sources that either facilitate or limits the behaviour of walking into the study area.
After removing the tourist cabin, Gråhøgdbu, and connected trails, most of the use is concentrated closer to existing infrastructure at Venabygdsfjellet. Nevertheless, there are still days with considerable traffic to and around the peaks outside the trail network, especially during holidays or weekends with good weather and favourable skiing conditions. The new tourist cabin, Veslefjellbua, was popular among recreationalists, and it seemed to be used by a broader user group than Gråhøgdbu. Factors facilitating the behaviour of walking into the study area included limited knowledge about the effects of outdoor recreation on wild reindeer, social norms, accessibility, nice weather and skiing conditions, adventure seeking, and a desire to get away from human infrastructure. In addition, positive feelings connected to surmounting difficulty, place attachment, and beautiful nature were important motivations. Factors limiting the behaviour include bad weather and skiing conditions, safety and comfort and the habit of walking on marked trails. Informants displayed positive or neutral attitudes towards implemented measures at Venabygdsfjellet, including removing infrastructure and legal measures. Many also accepted the idea of a hypothetical area restriction, while others were opposed to a total ban and preferred a more dynamic solution. Several were critical of the effectiveness of soft measures alone, and some criticized the individual responsibility that such measures place on visitors. At the same time, the informants lacked knowledge about the impact of human activity on wild reindeer, and it was highlighted that there is an underutilized potential for information efforts at Venabygdsfjellet.
Based on this, targeted information measures and area restrictions should be considered to further limit the behaviour of walking into the study area. This is a qualitative study that has taken a deep dive into the contextual conditions at Venabygdsfjellet, which may not necessarily be transferable to other locations or other contexts. Additional research should aim for better understanding of effects of both targeted information measures and stricter measures such as area restrictions and measures that target those not affected by removing trail infrastructure
Automated Foul Detection and Card Prediction in Soccer
Automated foul recognition and card prediction in soccer remain challenging due to the subjective nature of referee decisions, the complexity of distinguishing between fair and unfair action, and the difficulty in analyzing events from multiple camera perspectives. This thesis aims to develop an AI-driven approach for foul detection and card bookings prediction, utilizing multi-view video analysis to improve accuracy and consistency in decision-making.
To achieve this, we explore deep learning-based methods using convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and transformer architectures. The study is conducted using the SoccerNet MV-Foul Dataset, a publicly available dataset specifically designed for multi-view foul recognition. Additionally, we introduce a newly curated dataset, the Card Booking Prediction in Soccer (CBPS) Dataset, which consists of soccer foul incidents resulted into card bookings compiled from broadcast source. This dataset allows us to evaluate model generalization across different match environments, camera angles, and annotation styles.
We propose a comprehensive deep-learning pipeline that incorporates data preprocessing techniques, extracts features from multiple views, trains models, and evaluates performance. Our findings highlight that multi-view inputs significantly impact foul classification accuracy by reducing occlusions and capturing diverse perspectives of player interactions. The results demonstrate that while transformer-based models effectively capture contextual dependencies over time, CNN-based models offer greater robustness in distinguishing between different foul types. However, dataset imbalance and annotation inconsistencies remain key obstacles in optimizing classification performance.
This proposed solution tackles these challenges and contributes to the progress of AI-driven sports analytics, which could be utilized in automated officiating, match analysis, and systems that support referee decision-making. The findings from this work lay the groundwork for enhancing AI-assisted foul detection, equipping referees and analysts with a data-supported method to improve fairness and consistency in soccer officiating
Mitigating Hydropower Impacts Evaluating Fish Passage Improvements for Atlantic Salmon and Brown Trout
Hydropower operations frequently obstruct the downstream migration of anadromous salmonids, exposing smolts to physical barriers, delayed passage, and increased mortality. In 2023, structural modifications were implemented at the Fosstveit Hydropower Plant (HEP) in southern Norway to improve passage conditions for juvenile Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and anadromous brown trout (Salmo trutta). A 15 mm angled trash rack and low-level bypass system were installed to reduce turbine entrainment and facilitate safer migration. This study evaluated how smolts responded to these modifications under varying environmental conditions, with a focus on behaviour, passage timing, route selection, and survival.
In total, 359 smolts (207 Atlantic salmon, 152 brown trout) were tagged with PIT and radio transmitters. However, only 238 individuals were included in the final analyses due to post-tagging mortality, release-related losses, forebay mortality, possible tag failure, expulsion, predation, or undetected bypass exit. PIT antennas and manual tracking were used to monitor passage events, while water temperature, discharge, and light intensity were logged continuously. The majority of surviving smolts passed through the bypass, with no individuals detected in the turbine intake. Nevertheless, undetected mortality in the forebay could not be ruled out.
Atlantic salmon migrated more rapidly than brown trout, exhibiting significantly shorter forebay hesitation times (mean: 41.5 min vs. 112 min) and bypass passage durations (mean: 8.5 min vs. 13.7 min). Passage was strongly synchronised with crepuscular periods, and both species preferred migrating under light intensities between 5 and 10 lux. Generalised Additive Models (GAMs) showed that hesitation time was significantly influenced by water discharge (EDF = 6.5, p 12 °C but plateaued above 16 °C, suggesting thermal constraints on movement readiness.
Zero-inflated negative binomial models revealed that heavier individuals—particularly brown trout—made significantly more passage attempts (r = 0.52, p < 0.01), while fish length was only weakly associated (r = 0.24, p = 0.08). Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and k-means clustering identified three behavioural phenotypes differing in morphology, flow exposure, light conditions, and passage timing. Cormack-Jolly-Seber survival models estimated post-passage survival at 0.97 for salmon and 0.96 for trout, indicating overall successful mitigation.
Smoltification is not only an energetically demanding developmental stage but also a physiologically constrained and behaviourally sensitive window. Delay or stress during this period can impair osmoregulatory performance and reduce marine survival. The redesigned intake structure at Fosstveit effectively reduced turbine risk and promoted functionally meaningful passage for both species. However, the broader inter- and intraspecific variation in brown trout behaviour suggests that structural mitigation should be complemented by behavioural guidance cues. This study underscores the need for species-specific and ecologically grounded design of fish-friendly hydropower systems
I ett tilfelle presterer R10 noe bedre, spesielt i høyde.
Under vanskelige forhold svekkes høydepresisjonen merkbart.
This master's thesis investigates how the Trimble R12i performs compared to the Trimble R10, with a focus on accuracy and precision in RTK measurements under varying conditions. In addition, the performance of the R12i's tilt sensor is evaluated under controlled tilt angles and directions, as well as how well IMU-based orientation values correspond to external angle measurements.
The study is based on RTK measurements to known control points. Trimble R10 and R12i were tested in parallel in open, moderate, and challenging environments. In addition, R12i was tested with tilts from 5° to 30° in the directions north, east, south, and west. For a subset of the measurements, orientation data from the IMU were compared with manually measured tilt angles.
The first part of the thesis compares the performance of Trimble R12i and R10 in conventional RTK measurements. Results show that the two receivers produce nearly identical measurements in two of the tested areas under good conditions, but R12i provides more stable results. In one case, R10 performed slightly better, particularly in height. Under highly challenging conditions, the difference is clear, with R12i significantly outperforming R10.
The second part evaluates the performance of R12i’s tilt sensor. Horizontal deviations increase with increasing tilt, especially toward the south and east, while vertical deviations remain small and stable under favourable conditions. Tilts to the west produce the lowest and most stable deviations. The measurements show systematic differences in how the northing and easting components are affected by tilt direction. Under difficult conditions, vertical precision is noticeably reduced.
For the measurements taken under good conditions, the results were compared with the manufacturer's specifications. All height measurements fall within the specified limits, while just under one-third of the horizontal measurements do. This indicates that the specification limits are strict, and that exceeding them does not necessarily imply low practical precision. The IMU-based tilt values are largely consistent with the external reference, but weaknesses in the test setup mean the results should be interpreted with caution
A consequence of the increasing shares of renewable energy in the Nordic power system is reduction in the overall system inertia. This leads to a growing need for frequency containment recourses. To increase attractiveness in new recourses, it is essential to prove good profitability for the technology. With hybrid solutions, combining battery systems with existing hydro power plants, will the increased ability to offer power enhance the income from the power reserve markets. Investment in battery systems can also be an alternative to necessary upgrades, and thereby mitigate the new requirements for participation in the Norwegian FCRmarkets. The new requirements for participation can lead to higher costs for a hydro power plant. Both due to the cost of upgrading and larger fluctuations in power output. In a hybrid system, the battery can handle the fastest fluctuations and thereby reduce stress on the power plant turbines. Aneo AS have invested in a battery system for hybrid operation of Mørre Kraftverk. Hybrid power plants exist in both Sweden and Finland, but the technology is new for Norway. Profitable management solutions can increase the interest among other firms. An increased interest can thereby lead to similar investments and help meet the future need for frequency containment recourses. The results in this thesis show significant profitability increasement by offering reserves form a hybrid system compared with a battery system alone. Furthermore, Participation in FCR-D in addition to FCR-N increase the profitability and elongate the technical life of the battery. A solution that considers multiple markets when bidding, is therefore preferable. The development of reserve market prices is of great importance for the profitability, and the outlook should be considered when investing. The cyclic pattern and power management is crucial for the technical life of the battery. Due to this, a battery management system should be founded on a good understanding of the capacity loss during operation. Saesonal variations have a large effect on the profitability from participation in the FCR-markets. It can therefore be prudent to choose different strategies for different seasons. For example to prioritise participation in the day-ahead- or the intraday market during vinter
A Robotic Framework for Autonomous Laser-Based Weeding With Enhanced Weed Stem Localization via YOLO-RANSAC Fusion
According to the World Resources Institute, global population is projected to approach 10 billion by 2050, creating a 56 \% gap between the crop calories produced in 2010 and those needed by 2050. Meeting this demand, while safeguarding food quality against chemical contaminants such as pesticide residues, requires a change in both the efficiency and safety of crop production. Weeds increases the challenge by competing for light, water, space and nutrients and by harboring pests that threaten neighboring plants. Although herbicides and soil tillage remain widely used, both carry serious environmental and health risks. Recent advances in agricultural robotics, particularly laser-based weeding, offer promising alternatives.
This thesis introduces a complete autonomous laser-based weeding framework, integrating four modules: machine vision, deep-learning-based weed detection, motion planning, and laser actuation. A central contribution is a novel stem-localization approach that combines YOLO detection with RANSAC plane-fitting to pinpoint weed stems with unprecedented accuracy. To our knowledge, this is the first application of YOLO combined with RANSAC for weed stem targeting. By eliminating chemical inputs and improving targeting precision, our system lays the groundwork for safer, more efficient weed control, though further work remains to expand dataset diversity and tackle real-world deployment challenges
Dynamic Characteristics of Pedestrian Bridges in Various Timber Structural Forms
The increasing use of slender and lightweight pedestrian bridges has made pedestrian-induced vibrations a growing challenge in modern bridge design. This thesis investigates the dynamic behavior of three different timber pedestrian bridges: a girder, a through-truss bridge and a half-through arch bridge while maintaining the same weight, span length, width, and material properties. The main objective is to determine which construction system performs best under pedestrian-induced loads.
The study is based on a girder bridge, the Nordre Finstad footbridge in Nordre Follo, Akershus, Norway, which was tested by Hassan Mazloum for his thesis back in 2023. Based on his results, a FE-model of the girder bridge was developed in SAP2000 and calibrated to match the measured natural frequencies and peak accelerations. Using this as a reference, comparable models of the through-truss and half-through arch bridges were created, and both modal and time history analyses were performed for all three structures.
The results indicates that stiffness, mass distribution, and bracing significantly influence the dynamic performance of timber footbridges. Among the three, it was observed that the half-through arch bridge performed the best. It had the highest fundamental vertical frequency of 4,26 Hz, no lateral frequencies within the range of 100 Hz, and the lowest RMS acceleration of 0,017 m/s2. However, it’s narrow modal frequency distribution may be a limitation compared to the through-truss bridge, which showed a wider frequency range.
Several design guidelines were also evaluated and applied. Eurocode 5- Gen II provided consistent predictions, while Statens Vegvesen’s guideline underestimated lateral responses and ISO 10137 showed inconsistencies due to its graphical approach and limited input parameters.
The FE-software SAP2000 proved effective for modeling the global dynamic response of timber pedestrian bridges. Although some limitations were encountered, particularly in mesh refinement and element selection, the software enabled efficient structural comparison and parametric analysis. With appropriate engineering judgement, SAP2000 was found to be a suitable FE-tool for early-stage dynamic analysis of timber pedestrian bridges

Residents of Ås Nord face challenges with connections to public services and daily activities. The municipality seeks positive urban development. The project builds on relevant theory and reference projects within nature-based urban development. Through site analysis, inspections, and study tours, design principles have been developed, which form the basis for the development of Skogbyen Vinterbro.
Skogbyen Vinterbro is transformed from a car-based commercial area into a green district centre. The forest plays a central role, with green spaces strengthening the identity of the place. The "Urban Forests" are connected by a continuous blue-green structure and good pedestrian and bicycle connections. The commercial buildings are partially transformed into residential and service purposes, the collective street promotes green mobility, and Nessetveien is transformed from a county road to a "county street."
As a place, the district centre is strengthened by using nature-based solutions, changes in infrastructure, and transformation of buildings. Skogbyen's identity is enhanced through the establishment of movement lines and proximity to services in blue-green surroundings
Effects of Electrode Design on Measurements of Electric Brain Signals
Approximately 1/3 of patients diagnosed with epilepsy, suffers from a drug-resistant variety.
Currently, the only way to treat these patients, is through surgery. The surgery aims to remove
the brain tissue that constitute the epileptogenic zone (EZ). This procedure requires very
accurate localization beforehand, and the current standard intracranial electrodes (cylindrical
SEEG) may be improved upon to better serve this purpose.
A new design for intracranial recording electrodes for localizing the EZ, to aid in epileptic
surgery, has therefore been investigated and compared to conventional, cylindrical electrodes.
The new design consists of four circular, discrete conductive disk surfaces mounted on an
insulated cylindrical probe.
To model neural sources and probe response, we have used both the dipole approximation
together with volume conductor theory and a biophysically detailed cortical pyramidal cell
model, via forward modeling using the MC+VC scheme.
We have studied cancellation effects associated with the size and orientation of electrodes in
close proximity of the biophysically detailed neuron model. We found that disk electrodes
with radii > 100 μm are too large for detecting the resulting extracellular response when the
neuron was spiking. When the disk was placed so that it’s normal vector was perpendicular to
the apical dendrite of a non-firing, biophysically detailed neuron, we found that the amplitude
of the signal was smaller than when the disk was oriented with the normal vector pointing in
the same direction as the apical dendrite, and placed under the neuron’s soma.
The standard cylindrical and the newly designed disk set probes have been compared through
extensive simulations where numerical optimization was used to locate distant neural sources.
The results show that the new probe design provides a more stable and accurate localization
than the currently used cylindrical probes.
Lastly, we show that larger disk radii are more efficient in filtering out biological noise when
localizing distant neural sources. For the parameters used in the simulations, we found a
lower disk radius limit of 50 μm for effective filtering
