The trade-off between goals and uncertainty of outcome in professional team sports
Based on an assumption of an existing scoring probability difference between two teams engaged in a football match, the conditional probability distribution given the number of goals in the match for the low quality team beating the high quality team, is derived. Furthermore, similar distributions for the high quality team beating the low quality team as well as a draw are also derived. Based on a Poisson distribution of goals, we discuss a potential for optimizing expected uncertainty of outcome (UO) by adjusting intra-match rules or league rules for team sports. The main variables in this regard are (i) the typical number of goals scored, and (ii) the evenness of competing teams. A novel hybrid machine learning based system to classify shoulder implant manufacturers
It is necessary to know the manufacturer and model of a previously implanted shoulder prosthesis before performing Total Shoulder Arthroplasty operations, which may need to be performed repeatedly in accordance with the need for repair or replacement. In cases where the patient’s previous records cannot be found, where the records are not clear, or the surgery was conducted abroad, the specialist should identify the implant manufacturer and model during preoperative X-ray controls. In this study, an auxiliary expert system is proposed for classifying manufacturers of shoulder implants on the basis of X-ray images that is automated, objective, and based on hybrid machine learning models. In the proposed system, ten different hybrid models consisting of a combination of deep learning and machine learning algorithms were created and statistically tested. According to the experimental results, an accuracy of 95.07% was achieved using the DenseNet201 + Logistic Regression model, one of the proposed hybrid machine learning models (p < 0.05). The proposed hybrid machine learning algorithms achieve the goal of low cost and high performance compared to other studies in the literature. The results lead the authors to believe that the proposed system could be used in hospitals as an automatic and objective system for assisting orthopedists in the rapid and effective determination of shoulder implant types before performing revision surgery. LinkedIn in sport management education : developing the students’ professional profile boosting the teaching-learning process
Social media have burst into people's lives, transforming their personal and professional spheres. The sports industry has not been indifferent to these changes. Indeed, the management of these digital tools has become prized in workplace settings. Among all social media, LinkedIn has the strongest link to the professional world. Nevertheless, there is a gap in the literature so far regarding the incorporation of LinkedIn into sport management courses. Thus, this work aims to share the results of an educational innovation that uses LinkedIn as its main pedagogical element through blended-learning teaching method based on the learning by doing methodology. A total of 105 undergraduate sport management students from two Spanish universities participated in this study. A pre-test and a post-test were carried out to perform diverse statistical analyses to assess the educational experience's impact. The results show significant outcomes in students' professional profile development and interaction with the sport industry; class engagement and interaction between students and professors; and LinkedIn's suitability to develop the content of the relevant course. These results highlight the educational potential of LinkedIn and encourage sports management faculty to incorporate LinkedIn into their classes as a pedagogical resource.
