Cultural-Historical Perspective to Design Pedagogical AI for Enhancing Student Writing

This article explores the design and implementation of AI-driven feedback systems to enhance student writing through a cultural-historical perspective. Drawing on Vygotsky’s and Galperin’s theories, the study emphasises the role of feedback as a cultural tool that mediates learning and fosters cognitive development. The article introduces the Essay Assessment Technology (EAT), an AI-powered tool developed to support formative assessment in writing. EAT provides structured feedback on language, content, and organisation, guiding students through iterative drafting processes. The study presents findings from three writing processes conducted in Norwegian secondary schools, comparing outcomes between classes using EAT and those relying on peer feedback. Results indicate significant improvements in student writing quality, particularly in classes utilising EAT, with large effect sizes observed in later writing processes. The article outlines seven pedagogical design principles for AI-driven feedback systems, emphasising the importance of aligning feedback with learning objectives, fostering student autonomy, and integrating social interactions. These principles aim to transform feedback from a static assessment tool into a dynamic resource that supports self-regulation and deeper engagement with the writing process. The study highlights the potential of AI to enhance formative assessment but underscores the need for balanced integration with human interaction to address higher-order writing skills and ethical concerns. By grounding AI feedback in cultural-historical theory, a framework is offered to develop technologies that not only improve writing proficiency but also prepare students for lifelong learning in an AI-driven world.publishedVersio

Klassereise i "de andres samfunn". Tysk-tyrkisk samtidslitteratur.

Sentralt står en lesning av to romaner: Gün TanksDie Optimistinnen og Dinçer Güçyeters Unser Deutschlandsmärchen (begge 2022).A number of today’s German-Turkish authors explore the living conditionsof the first generations of labour migrants. At the same time, they put more than 60years of labour migration into perspective by reflecting on their own generation’sposition in German mainstream society. This creates a timeline that narrates a classjourney within “the others’ society”. Central to this is an analysis of two novels: GünTank’s Die Optimistinnen and Dinçer Güçyeter’s Unser Deutschlandsmärchen (both2022).publishedVersio

Toddlers’ actualization of affordances during free exploration in a varied natural environment

Research indicates that the natural environment offers diverse and challenging play and exploration opportunities that support developmental aspects in children. However, studies on toddlers’ utilization of natural settings are scarce. This study investigates how toddlers use a varied natural environment when allowed to explore freely and was conducted with a mixed methods approach. To capture how the toddlers utilized the natural environment, data were collected through head-mounted GoPro cameras as seven toddlers explored freely. The results demonstrate that toddlers engage in a wide range of activities, including gross motor, loose material, and water activities in the natural environment. There were large variations among the toddlers concerning time spent on different surfaces and exploratory activities, supporting the notion of nature as a child-friendly environment for toddlers. The findings have implications for early childhood and education and care (ECEC) practices, where toddlers should be given ample time and space to explore nature freely, in areas with varied and challenging surfaces and a rich diversity of natural elements and materials to explore.publishedVersio

Effectiveness of a group intervention to improve mental health in siblings of children with chronic disorders: a cluster randomized controlled trial.

Abstract Objective: We evaluated the effectiveness of SIBS, a preventive intervention for siblings and parents of children with chronic disorders (CDs). Methods: This two-arm, unmasked cluster randomized controlled trial registered on ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT04056884), included 288 siblings (M age ¼ 10.4 years, SD ¼ 1.9) and parents of children with CDs (mainly neurodevelopmental disorders) randomly assigned to intervention (k ¼ 34, n ¼ 137) or waitlist control (k ¼ 35, n ¼ 151) groups. Eligible siblings were aged 8–16 years and had a sibling diagnosed with a CD. SIBS is manual-based and was delivered as five sessions over 2 weeks in primary care and hospital settings across Norway. Three sessions are separate for siblings and parents, and two are integrated sibling–parent dialogues. The primary outcome was sibling mental health, rated by siblings, parents, and teachers. The secondary outcome was parent–child communication, rated by siblings and parents. Analyses included intention-totreat (ITT) and complier average causal effects (CACE). Results: Although not statistically significant, at 3-month follow-up, the intervention group showed fewer mental health problems (ITT: siblingrated d ¼ −0.16, 95% CI [−0.49, 0.17]; parent-rated d ¼ −0.10, 95% CI [−0.48, 0.12]; teacher-rated d ¼ −0.18, 95% CI [−0.50, 0.29]) and higherquality parent–child communication (ITT: sibling-rated d ¼ 0.21, 95% CI [−0.10, 0.52]; parent-rated d ¼ 0.24, 95% CI [−0.07, 0.55]) compared to waitlist. Conclusions: The SIBS intervention demonstrated small, consistent positive effects on sibling mental health and parent–child communication. This suggests SIBS is a promising preventive program for siblings of children with CDs. Keywords: siblings, parents, intervention, prevention, randomized controlled trial.publishedVersio

Implementing Digital Sovereignty to Accelerate Smarter Mobility Solutions in Local Communities

Achieving a climate neutral economy by 2050 in Europe in line with the European Green Deal places specific responsibility on the transportation sector, which contributes to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. For the transportation domain to reduce its GHG emissions, there is need to advance urban mobility solutions in local communities via the use of data in all modes of transportation. Accordingly, to intelligently improve mobility solutions, huge amounts of data are needed from citizens in local communities to improve mobility services. However, the access, usage, and ownership of data in the transportation sector continue to be hindered due to issues including privacy, security, and trust concerns, among others. However, to improve smarter mobility solutions, there is a need for clarification of digital sovereignty, which today hinders data flow among different actors in the transportation sector. Therefore, research is needed to provide an approach that enables digital sovereignty while providing innovative mobility services and applications to citizens. Accordingly, this article carried out a systematic review to explore how to maintain digital sovereignty to improve urban mobility services in local communities. Based on grounded theory and a literature review, this study explores the factors that influence digital sovereignty from local communities’ point of view. More importantly, a policy framework is proposed to improve sovereign data usage control for citizens. Additionally, recommendations for achieving digital sovereignty are presented to foster data ecosystem business opportunities for mobility service providers and to increase data autonomy, trust, and transparency for citizens.publishedVersio

Audio Technology for Autistic Persons with Auditory Sensory Differences—A Scoping Review

Auditory sensory differences are common in the autistic population, often causing daily challenges. Audio technology offers support in managing auditory environments and can be a useful resource in various contexts. This scoping review examined 17 studies on the use of audio technology for autistic persons with auditory sensory differences, highlighting significant research gaps. Findings reveal limited empirical research integrating technology and autism perspectives. The studies predominantly use quantitative methods, small, narrowly aged samples, under-representation of females and individuals with intellectual disabilities, and high dropout rates. Few studies assess acceptability. Further studies on audio technology for autistic persons with auditory sensory differences are needed to address gaps and facilitate the auditory environment for autistic persons.publishedVersio

Russian Mathematics in Norwegian Classrooms Challenges in Implementing Zankov’s Didactic- Methodological System in Primary Mathematics Education in Norway

Retrieved from https://www.iejee.com/index.php/IEJEE/article/view/2280/713Developmental Education in Mathematics (DEM) according to Zankov’s model, or “Russian mathematics”, has been in use in Norway since 2009 in an increasing number of schools (about 100 elementary schools in 2024). There has been relatively little research into the implementation of this teaching method in a Norwegian context. In this article we review the fundamental elements and characteristics of Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximate Development (ZPD) and the didactic principles and methodology in Zankov’s system. We also discuss some challenges concerning the implementation of Zankov’s didactic system in Norwegian primary schools and some possible explanations.publishedVersio

    Pornography and human rights education

Children’s exposure to violent pornography may have negative outcomes for their lives and the fulfilment of their rights. Many pornographic videos contain verbal aggression and sexual abuse, including rape. The Committee on the Rights of the Child affirms States Parties´ obligations to ensure that teachers are trained on safeguards relating to the digital environment, yet such training is not an integral part of many teacher education programmes. Educators need support in this field. Our methodological approach is inspired by auto-ethnographic research drawing on our own teaching experience related to pornography and sexual abuse. Extending on teacher typologies, we argue the need for critical perspectives through human rights education that enables students’ respect for and understanding of the human rights instruments, including the Convention on Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) and the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), as part of the context implicated in pornography to empower them to ethically navigate their everyday relations.acceptedVersio
