    Is loss aversion context specific? Theory and evidence from an experiment with decoys

    Using new experimental data, this paper finds evidence that contextual factors can affect observed loss sensitivity. Participants in an experiment of hypothetical lotteries made choices that were systematically affected by the presence of decoy gambles. Following previous literature in cognitive psychology, a theoretical model is proposed in which people encode new information comparing it to similar experiences retrieved from memory. In the so called “editing phase” of decision making, individuals are thought to weight more gains or losses that stand out compared to what they experienced in previous lotteries, including the decoy lotteries. Using different empirical methods, the hypothesis that loss sensitivity does not vary with the distribution of the decoys can be rejected. The participants that were presented with decoys with higher gains and lower losses behaved as if they were mildly loss averse. Those presented with lower gains and higher losses appear to have been loss neutral. Pooling the two groups together, the mean and median estimates suggest a very mild but statistically significant loss aversion

    One of the manufacturing techniques often used in industry to produce various forms of plastic components. The research stage begins with designing a box using Solidworks software, Analysis carried out on the vacuum forming box structure using finite element analysis. The results obtained are in the form of maximum stress that occurs, displacement and safety factor. The vacuum forming box structure is also subjected to a load of 51.878 N or equivalent to 5.2901 kg. The location of the force given to the vacuum forming box structure with a vertical force direction downwards, the displacement that occurs in the vacuum forming box structure with a force of 51.878 N. The largest displacement occurs at the top center of the vacuum forming box surface with a displacement of 0.75 mm. This happens because in that section the area is free or does not have a support in the middle. the safety factor value that occurs in the vacuum forming box structure with a force of 51.878 N. The safety factor value used in this analysis is 1.5. The safety factor value obtained in the vacuum box structure is 1.8. The safety factor value requirement used, then based on the data obtained, the vacuum box structure using plywood material is safe in receiving a load of 51,878 N, because the FOS value obtained is greater than the FOS standard used. In testing the tool using PET plastic with a temperature of 100 ℃ and a time of 30 seconds, the testing process begins with the preparation of the appropriate PET plastic and is placed on the part or mold of the tool to be tested. The temperature of the tool is heated to 100 ℃.Salah satu teknik manufaktur yang sering digunakan  dalam industri untuk menghasilkan berbagai bentuk komponen plastik. Tahapan penelitian dimulai dengan merancang box menggunakan perangkat lunak Solidworks, Analisis yang dilakukan pada stuktur box vacuum forming menggunakan finite element analisys. Hasil yang diperoleh berupa tegangan maksimum yang terjadi, displacment (perpindahan) dan safety factor. Pada stuktur box vacuum forming juga dilakukan pembebanan sebesar 51,878 N  atau setara 5,2901 kg. Letak gaya yang diberikan pada stuktur box vacuum forming dengan arah gaya vertical ke bawah, perpindahan yang terjadi pada stuktur box vacuum forming dengan diberikan gaya 51,878 N. Perpindahan terbesar terjadi di bagian atas tengah dari permukaan box vacuum forming dengan besar perpindahan yaitu 0,75 mm. Hal ini terjadi karena pada bagian tersebut area bebas atau tidak melikiki tumpuan di tengah tengah. nilai safety factor yang terjadi pada stuktur box vacuum forming dengan diberikan gaya 51,878 N. Nilai safety factor yang digunakan dalam analisis ini yaitu 1,5. Nilai factor of safety yang diperoleh pada stuktur box vacuum yaitu 1,8. Syarat nilai safety factor yang digunkan, maka berdasarkan data yang diperoleh, stuktur box vacuum menggunakan material kayu lapis aman dalam menerima beban sebesar 51,878 N, karena nilai FOS yang diperoleh lebih besar dari standar FOS yang digunakan. Dalam spengujian alat menggunakan plastik PET dengan suhu 100 ℃ dan waktu 30 detik, Proses pengujian dimulai dengan persiapan plastik PET yang sesuai dan ditempatkan pada bagian atau cetakan alat yang akan diuji. Suhu alat dipanaskan hingga 100 ℃

    Airport security is one of the most crucial components of the aviation industry. For this reason, security screening procedures aim to avoid hazards that could threaten flight safety. However, passengers often experience difficulties in understanding security check procedures which can lead to queues and increased workload for Avsec officers. Passengers' understanding of security procedures is influenced by various factors, including the level of education and experience. This study aims to analyze the effect of education and experience on passengers' understanding of security check procedures at Sentani International Airport. This study uses a quantitative approach with a sample population of 100 respondents from airport passengers who are doing the boarding process. Based on the results of the analysis test, it shows that education and experience have a positive and significant effect on passenger understanding both partially and simultaneously. The results of these findings are expected to provide insight into the importance of education and experience in improving passenger understanding of security check procedures at airports

    The availability of baggage carts (BCT) is a vital element in supporting passenger baggage and cargo services at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. This study aims to analyze the implementation of the cooperation between PT Gapura Angkasa and PT IAS Support in fulfilling the requirement of 100 baggage cart units, as well as its impact on the adequacy of baggage carts for airport operational activities. A qualitative descriptive research method was employed, with data collected through observation, interviews, and document analysis. The findings indicate that the cooperation between the two companies has generally been effective in addressing the previous shortage of baggage carts by increasing the number of available units. This improvement has contributed to smoother ground handling operations and enhanced passenger baggage and cargo services. However, the study also identifies challenges in the distribution and deployment of baggage carts within the airport area. These challenges primarily stem from the lengthy bureaucratic procedures and strict regulations imposed by Angkasa Pura Indonesia regarding the entry of new assets into the airport, which delay the operational use of the carts despite the completion of the procurement process. Overall, the cooperation has played a significant role in fulfilling operational needs, although regulatory constraints remain a key obstacle to optimal implementation

    Creative Thinking and Function Synthesis Task

    This experiment introduces a new measurement of creative potential - Functions Synthesis Task (FST), in which we ask participants to come up with as many objects that fulfill three functions given as they can. One's creative potential is measured by the number of objects (fluency), the number of categories of objects (flexibility), the possibility that other people cannot think of the objects (originality), and the detailed information that participants' wrote for objects (elaboration); The higher the scores in these four dimensions, the higher the creative potential. The generation of FST was inspired by Alternative Uses Task (AUT) and Compound Remote Associate Test (CRAT) - two instruments that have been widely employed to measure individuals' creative potential. AUT asks participants to generate as many different and unusual uses for an object that they can think of and scores the participants' performance based on the originality, fluency, elaboration, and flexibility of their answers; The higher the AUT score, the higher the creative potential. CRAT asks participants to come up with a single correct answer that makes up a common compound word or phrase with three stimulus words given and scores the participants' performance based on the number of correct answers (accuracy) and speed in a series of word puzzles; The higher the accuracy and speed in CRAT, the higher the creative potential. According to existing claims, AUT and CRAT measure divergent and convergent creativity, respectively. Our new measurement (i.e. FST) serves as a complement of AUT and CRAT in measuring individuals' creative potential. While AUT and CRAT treat divergent and convergent thinking as independent thinking processes, FST measures divergent and convergent thinking processes as an integration. In detail, the process in which come up with objects that fulfill three functions given requires one's convergent thinking, the requirement that name as many objects as possible encourages one's divergent thinking. Accordingly, the fluency and flexibility of one's answers indicate her/his divergent thinking in a convergent context; Originality and elaboration of one's answers represent her/his convergent thinking based on divergent retrieval of existing knowledge. Integrating divergent and convergent thinking in one task has differentiated FST from AUT and CRAT. Participants will finish FST, AUT, CRAT, and a Creative Self-efficacy Inventory in our experiment. and we propose a question that does one's performance in FST correlated with other creativity measurements. Their performance in our experiment not only explicit the relationship between FST and other measurements, but also created a criteria (i.e. fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration) baseline for future studies

    Assessing Perceptions of the Ecological Validity and Consequentiality of Social Psychological Research

    Social psychology has recently been criticized for heavy reliance on introspective self-reports, hypothetical scenarios, and questionnaire ratings in lieu of the direct observation of behaviors. Yet “behavior” is a broad concept that defies simple definition and the authors of these critiques appear to define this term only by its negative, with behavior encompassing actions other than “finger movements, keystrokes, and pencil marks” (Baumeister et al., 2007; Dolinski, 2018). It seems unlikely that the argument is that social psychologists should restrict themselves to the study of gross bodily movements. Rather, the important questions these critiques raise have more to do with social psychology’s ecological validity (i.e., whether phenomena are investigated in a way that is representative of and generalizable to naturalistic settings) and consequentiality (i.e., whether the phenomena investigated are of practical real-world significance). Thus, rather than an analysis of whether published articles have studied actual behavior, an assessment of recent research on these two dimensions is needed to determine whether claims that social psychologists “pay remarkably little attention to the important things that people do” (Baumeister et al., 2007) are warranted. The purpose of this project is to arrive at such an initial assessment. Specifically, we plan to investigate whether ordinary people perceive recent (i.e., 2018-2019) social psychological research published in top journals to be low in ecological validity and consequentiality

    The association of brain size and intelligence has been subject to research for a long time (e.g. Rushton & Ankney, 2007). Recent meta-analyses (McDaniel, 2005; Pietschnig et al., 2015; Gignac & Bates, 2017) estimated small to moderate (Pearson) correlations between in vivo brain volume and intelligence. The estimates differ substantial in size. Depending on the used inclusion criteria and meta-analytical methods, the estimates range from r = .24 (Pietschnig et al., 2015) up to r = .39 (Gignac & Bates, 2017). The investigations of possible moderators have also yielded different results. Whereas McDaniel (2005) identified sex and age to be significant moderators, Pietschnig et al. (2015) concluded the opposite. Some moderators have been examined only by one research team and, considering the differences above, need conceptual replication. Ethnicity as a possible moderator has been discussed thoroughly in the literature (e.g. Rushton & Ankney, 2007), but never has been included in a meta-analysis due to lack of data (McDaniel, 2005). Analyses regarding the presence of dissemination bias reached different conclusions as well. Considering these inconsistencies and open questions, this planned study seeks to achieve several goals: (1) Give an additional reasonable estimate of the association of in vivo brain volume and intelligence based on updated data and alternative analysis procedures. (2) Investigate the impact of researcher´s data and analysis decisions (or broadly termed researcher´s degrees of freedom) on the summary effect estimates. (3) Replicate moderator analyses conclusions that were reached unanimously or only have been conducted once (non-clinical vs. patients, correlation of applied intelligence measurement with g). (4) Investigate contradictory conclusions about certain moderators (age, sex). (5) Investigate a potential moderator never analyzed in a meta-analysis on the subject before (ethnicity). (6) Provide information about the extent of bias in the updated data and investigate, why Pietschnig el al. (2015) and Gignac and Bates (2017) reached different conclusions. This will include a replication of a decline effect (Schooler, 2011; Pietschnig et al. 2019) found by Pietschnig et al. (2015). (7) Discuss conclusions about a reasonable effect size estimate range of in vivo brain volume and intelligence. Discuss utility, usability and cost-effectiveness of used methods. In order to achieve these goals, the largest meta-analysis on the subject (Pietschnig et al., 2015) will be updated, expanded, and conducted with additional specification choices. Several sensitivity analyses will be conducted in reference to data and analyses decisions made by the previous meta-analysts. Subsequently all these possible specifications will be included in multiverse, specification curve, and combinatorial analyses (Voracek et al., 2019), to examine inconsistencies regarding the synthesized general effects. Moderators will be investigated with subgroup analyses and meta-regression approaches. A Bayesian meta-analysis will conclude this planned study, exploring the use of non-frequentist methods for the investigation of the association of in vivo brain volume and intelligence

    This study analyzes citizens’ beliefs regarding an ideal public sector worker across three countries with varying public administrative cultures, namely the Netherlands, United States and South Korea. In every society, depending on beliefs regarding structure, behavior and purpose of the government, public sector workers and citizens can have different relationships. For example, East Asian countries are often referred to as having public administrative cultures that are particularly influenced by the teachings of Confucius. Confucianism has an ancient, robust, and durable justification for public administration that is primarily based on moral values (Frederickson, 2002). Whereas western concepts of bureaucracy place more emphasis on democratic proceduralism and an efficiency-oriented professional bureaucracy for administration (Webber, 1947; Niskanen, 1971; Arrow, 1974). Depending on a society’s beliefs regarding public administration, people belonging to different societies may, therefore, have different expectations of the role of public sector workers and how an ideal public sector worker should look like. These differential beliefs could serve as the basis for which citizens formulate their judgements of public sector workers. Hence, the central questions this study seeks to answer are: 1) What are the values that an ideal public sector worker in each of these cultural contexts is expected to have? 2) Do the participants describe values that are consistent with the bureaucratic tradition of their country? 3) How far are ideal public sector workers from typical public sector workers perceived to be? The study aims to present a descriptive classification of these perceived values according to three different public administrative traditions, namely: Confucianism, Rechtsstaat (Weberian) and New Public Management using automated text analyses methods
