Social Connection and Mental Health of Perinatal Women Before and During Covid-19: A Longitudinal Study

    No full text
This study will examine how symptoms of depression and anxiety and perceptions of social support change in response to the Covid-19 pandemic among women who are pregnant or postpartum. Further, the study will investigate whether perceived social support and loneliness moderate the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on longitudinal patterns of women’s mental health during the perinatal period

Are Pathogenic Purity and Sexual Purity shaped by different Psychological Mechanisms?

    No full text
Purity is one of the moral foundations that are formulated in the Moral Foundations Theory by Jonathan Haidt and has been a subject of research in several studies. Considered as a single “moral foundation”, purity relates to concerns about contamination. However, we hypothesize that there are at least two forms of purity norm which are shaped by distinct psychological mechanisms, namely pathogenic purity and sexual purity. To test this hypothesis, we designed a questionnaire with 60 scenarios that depict either sexual purity violations or pathogen purity violations. We predict that at least two factors should emerge that with items conceptually relating to pathogenic purity and sexual purity

RANCANG BANGUN MEKANISME UNTUK MENGHASILKAN GERAK UNDULATORY MENIRU GERAK SIRIP IKAN PARI

    Get PDF

Sultan Thaha Jambi Airport is located close to the city center, only two kilometers away, but there are still many forests around it. Due to its strategic but also vulnerable location, it is very common for wild animals to enter the airport area. The purpose of this study was to identify the causal factors and to find out how to handle wild animals at Sultan Thaha Airport. To overcome this problem, a Safety Risk & Quality Control Unit was formed whose task is to ensure the safety and quality of flights at this airport. This study was conducted by direct observation in the field, and collecting data from related documents. The results of this study concluded that the factors causing wildlife hazards at Sultan Thaha Jambi Airport come from internal conditions, such as infiltration ponds, tall grass, bushes, and trees that are habitats for wild animals. External factors include the existence of residential areas, rice fields, garbage dumps, ponds, fish ponds, and forests around the airport that attract wild animals. Internal handling is carried out through habitat management, such as installing fences and pruning vegetation, although it is still in the process of being repaired. External handling involves cooperation with BKSDA, PERBAKIN, authorities, and the community to evict, record, and regulate land use so as not to attract wild animals to the airport area

Revisiting the logic in language: The scope of 'each' and 'every' universal quantifier is alike after 'all'

A doubly-quantified sentence like 'Every bear approached a tent is ambiguous': Did every bear approach a different tent, or did they approach the same tent? These two interpretations are assumed to be mentally represented as logical representations, which specify how the different quantifiers are assigned scope with respect to each other. Based on a structural priming study, Feiman and Snedeker (2016, Cognitive Psychology) argued that logical representations capture quantifier-specific combinatorial properties (e.g., the specification of every differs from the specification of each in logical representations). We re-examined this conclusion by testing logical representation priming in Dutch. Across four experiments, we observed that priming of logical representations emerged if the same quantifiers are repeated in prime and target, but also if the prime and target contained different quantifiers. However, logical representation priming between quantifiers emerged less consistently than priming within the same quantifier. More specifically, our results suggest that priming between quantifiers emerges more robustly if the participant is presented with quantifier variation in the prime trials than if they are presented with the same quantifier in all prime trials. When priming between quantifiers emerged, however, its strength was comparable to priming within the same quantifier. Therefore, we conclude that logical representations do not specify quantifier-specific biases in the assignment of scope

Emotional tears: What they are and how they work

    No full text
Although much is known about emotional tears from the perspectives of neurobiology and behavior, the production of emotional tears and the responses they elicit depend sensitively on a rich set of computations—one which has received little attention to date. This review article aims to close this gap. Emotional tearing occurs during negative events (e.g., injuries) and positive events (e.g., achievements). Episodes of tearing appear to be united by tearers’ subjective imputation of negative or positive value to certain internal or external phenomena. Knowing the degree to which objects, organisms, events, and states of affairs enhance or diminish one’s prospects—the value of things—is a pressing matter for humans and other organisms. Value information is produced for internal consumption, to be used by behavior-regulating mechanisms in the focal individual. But some evaluations are made available, in addition, to other people, through tearing and other forms of verbal and nonverbal communication. Tearing may function as an implicit plea for receivers (the tear targets) to minimize the costs imposed on the tearer by nature, by third-parties, or by the tear targets themselves—common when the tearer has lower formidability or wherewithal than tear targets do. In addition, tearing may exhort tear targets to infer and register which things the tearer values, positively or negatively. Here, we characterize tears, describe the game-theoretic logic of bargaining from a position of weakness, outline the computational systems that regulate the production of and responses to emotional tears, and review findings about emotional tearing that are relevant to the signaling hypothesis

PROACTIVE AND RETROACTIVE EFFECTS OF NOVELTY AND REST ON MEMORY.

Novel experiences appear to benefit memory for unrelated information encoded shortly before or after. Other research suggests that memory is impaired by effortful tasks following encoding, versus simply resting. This registered report explicitly tested proactive and retroactive effects of novel exploration and of wakeful rest. Four groups of participants explored a novel or familiarised virtual environment, either shortly before or shortly after encoding a list of unrelated words. A fifth ‘wakeful rest’ group performed a low-effort attention task both before and after encoding. Memory was tested with immediate free recall, delayed (next day) free recall, and delayed recognition with confidence judgments (from which recollection and familiarity were estimated). Bayes Factors provided evidence against both a proactive and retroactive benefit of novelty across all measures of memory, but evidence for a retroactive benefit of rest for immediate recall. In exploratory analysis, we also found evidence for a proactive benefit of rest on immediate recall. We argue that the bidirectional benefits of wakeful rest are more easily explained by Temporal Distinctiveness theory than Consolidation theory. Overall, wakeful rest surrounding learning may represent a useful intervention for improving memory, while novel exploration may not

Cross-temporal replication of the relationship between SDO and political attitudes in Japan: SDO and attitudes shifted but the relationship holds.

    No full text
Intergroup conflicts lead to devastating consequences and the elucidation of the cause of conflicts has been one of the central and pressing issues. Previous studies found that social dominance orientation (SDO) is a strong predictor of individual differences in endorsing specific policies that can enhance intergroup conflict, such as increasing defense costs. While the relationship between SDO and some specific policies has been examined in Western contexts, there has been much less research in non-Western contexts. Moreover, previous studies revealed that the relationship varies between non-Western countries. We conducted a study (N = 560) to replicate the positive correlation between SDO and political attitudes related to conservatism in Mifune and Yokota (2018) who collected the data in 2012. Using Bayesian inferences, we showed that while SDO and some policy attitudes have changed between samples over the last ten years, the correlation between them remained mostly unchanged even after controlling for conservatism. We discuss the consistency of the relationship between SDO and conservative political attitudes in the past ten years in Japan
