Robot-Guided Lightweight Engineering Fixtures: Process Lightweight Engineering for More Flexible, Resource-Saving and Energy-Efficient Production
1521When planning and developing new production plants, the focus is no longer only on the required investment costs and the required unit output, but a shift in focus to operating costs, energy consumption and sustainability can be observed. In the case of car body production lines in vehicle manufacturing, there is also a demand for increasing flexibility due to ever shorter product life cycles and smaller product volumes. Concepts for increasing flexibility in car body construction and for more energy-efficient production are already being implemented. In this paper, a new concept is presented that takes both requirements into account and implements them. The impact of the implementation of lightweight engineering and of a new approach, process lightweight engineering, are investigated on a change of operating resources concept. The results of both studies are presented, and the potentials of the results are evaluated and discussed. The results shown that this method enables an increase in flexibility with reduced energy consumption. It is a method to improve the production lines and fulfill the requirements of the future car body shop
A Data Generation Framework for Acoustic Drone Detection Algorithms
184188State-of-the-art drone detection systems are generally combining different sensors, such as radar, acoustic, radio frequency (RF-) or optic sensors, each of which contributes individual capabilities. Acoustic sensors have a relatively low spatial range. On the other hand, they can be used in conditions of bad visibility and for scenarios without line-of-sight between sensor and drone. The development of acoustic drone detection (ADD) algorithms typically requires substantial amounts of realistic recordings of flying drones. Moreover, when evaluating methods for robustly extracting characteristic properties of drones, such as the fundamental frequency (F0) of the rotor blades from sensor data, knowledge of ground truth (GT) data is important. In this paper we present a framework for automatically generating both acoustic drone recordings and GT transcripts of the corresponding time-synchronous motor rotations. We present an application using the thus generated data for evaluating an ADD algorithm based on F0 tracking
DED for Repair and Manufacture of Turbomachinery Components
307326Direct energy deposition (DED) is well known for its suitability for repair applications. This chapter describes the main process steps of two exemplary DED process chains for turbomachinery use cases. In the field of turbomachinery maintenance and new component production additive manufacturing technologies, such as DED, contribute to a flexible and profitable production of small batch sizes. The chapter explains the steps of an exemplary process chain for the repair of a turbine blade platform: machining & preparation, reverse engineering, generation of tool paths, DED process and adaptive machining. DED based hybrid additive manufacturing of new components is mainly motivated either by an increase of productivity or by an increase of component value. The exemplary component in the process chain is a turbocharger nozzle ring. The nozzle ring is used for turbochargers of diesel and gas engines in the 400–3,300 kW power range
Identification of contaminants of emerging concern through temporal trend analysis of suspended particulate matter in the Rhine River catchments (2005-2022): A case study using LC-HRMS to support early-warning systems
The continuous release of synthetic chemicals into aquatic systems underscores the need for long-term assessments of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs). Archived suspended particulate matter (SPM) samples from the German Environmental Specimen Bank (ESB) (2005-2022) at two Rhine sites (Weil am Rhein and Koblenz) were analyzed using liquid chromatography–high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) suspect/non-target screening (SS/NTS) to evaluate temporal trends. Using retention-time indices and orthogonal MS/MS evidence (mzCloud, FISh, CFM-ID), 332 compounds were identified at varying Schymanski confidence levels (2.1: 3.0 %; 2.2: 5.7 %; 3.1: 53 %; 3.2: 38 %). Temporal analysis of LC-HRMS peak areas revealed that 25 % of contaminants increased over time, with a higher proportion at Koblenz (29 %) than Weil (18 %). Conversely, several compounds exhibited statistically significant decreasing trends at both Koblenz (14 %) and Weil sites (13 %), consistent with regulatory measures, improved wastewater treatment, and shifts in industrial practices. Aquatic toxicity prediction (ECOSAR) indicated that 47 % (154 of 332) of annotated structures were highly acutely toxic (LC₅₀/EC₅₀ ≤ 1 mg/L) to at least one test group (fish, Daphnia, or green algae). This study provides the first 18-year, site-specific non-target time series from a national archive and integrating orthogonal identification with hazard prediction to support chemical prioritization. Archived SPM enables retrospective and comparable assessment of particle-associated contaminants, complementing dissolved-phase monitoring, and supporting the identification of unmonitored emerging CECs. Crucially, long-term NTS of these SPM samples provides screening-level early-warning signals and a watch list for targeted confirmation and risk management.50
Power Hardware-in-the-Loop Validation of Grid-Forming Control and Current Limitation for Start up of Induction Motors in Microgrids
The start of induction motors in converter based microgrids poses particular challenges for grid-forming converters due to the limited over-current capabilities. To avoid undesirable over-current operation of the converters during start up, suitable current limitation methods are required to limit both the provided amplitude and the provided angle of the grid-forming control in an appropriate way. In this paper, a grid-forming control with voltage phasor based current limitation is validated using power hardware-in-the-loop for the case of induction motor start up in an exemplary industrial microgrid. For validation, the two different current limiting prioritization methods of amplitude and angle prioritization are analyzed in case of start up of an induction motor at different torques

Microstructure of atmospheric plasma sprayed (Al,Cr)2O3 – TiO2 coatings from blends
758764Coatings prepared from chromia-rich (Al,Cr)2O3 solid solution feedstock powders are rarely studied so far. In this work, the processability of a commercial (Al,Cr)2O3 solid solution (ss) powder containing 78 wt.-% Cr2O3 by atmospheric plasma spraying (APS) and the corresponding coating microstructures and hardness were studied, including the effect of blending with 2, 23 and 54 wt.-% TiO2. The microstructures were analyzed using SEM, EDS and XRD measurements. It was shown that blending with TiO2 reduces the porosity and increases the deposition efficiency. Due to the lower porosity, the Vickers microhardness of the coatings was increased. Small amounts of Ti in ss (Al,Cr)2O3 splats were detected in coatings prepared from blends with higher TiO2 contents. The ss (Al,Cr)2O3 areas also vary after the spraying process in terms of their aluminum and chromium content
Telemedicine adoption in Ecuador: an assessment of physician perceptions and knowledge towards its benefits and limitations
Background: Telemedicine (TM) is a growing field with the potential to improve healthcare delivery; however, it is important for proper implementation to understand how physicians perceive the benefits and limitations related to their use. With this study, our aim is to assess the perceptions and knowledge of TM among a sample of Ecuadorian healthcare providers.
Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional online survey-based study where participants answered a 12-item survey assessing their knowledge and perceptions towards TM. Demographic variables were analyzed applying descriptive statistics, and a chi-square goodness-of-fit test was used to assess the observed frequencies of each of the survey’s queries. Multiple linear regression was performed to evaluate predictors of overall attitude regarding TM.
Results: In total, 382 participants completed the survey with an average age of 51.3 years [standard deviation (SD) 11.4]. Around half of the participants expressed low to very low familiarity with TM technology [χ2 (4) =88.497, P<0.001]. Most of them considered to a high extent that TM is effective in reducing costs of patient care in hospitals [32.5%; n=124; χ2 (4) =78.812, P<0.001]. Finally, 8 out of 10 participants expressed that a framework should be created to prevent breaches of data confidentiality when using TM [χ2 (4) =250.749, P<0.001].
Conclusions: In this study, we identified a significant proportion of physicians who reported limited familiarity with TM, despite recognizing its potential benefits for patient care. Concerns regarding data confidentiality breaches and the risk of malpractice were highlighted as primary issues necessitating a framework to mitigate these risks. Future research is required to address the perceived technological barriers to ensure the safe and efficient implementation of TM in healthcare settings.1
