    No full text

Sensitivity Factors for Integrated Energy Systems: A Joined Quasi-Steady-State Approach

    No full text
Integrated energy systems can increase the use of volatile renewable energy generation while reducing operation cost in the electric power system. The benefits result from shifting energy between energy infrastructures and using the network storage capability of district heating and gas systems. But the more strongly the different energy systems are linked the more complex their operation becomes. To ensure a secure and reliable system operation while using the full potential of integrated energy systems the interactions and the network storage effects of the district heating and gas system must be analyzed. Existing power flow calculation methods of integrated energy systems, however, neglect the network storage effects which result from the dynamic behavior of the district heating and gas system. The dynamic behavior is only investigated if the different energy systems are solved separately. As existing methods do not directly represent the interactions and effects of the dynamic behavior in an integrated energy system, the effect of any unit's power change on the power flows in the integrated energy system can only be determined by a complete power flow calculation, leading to a high computational cost. To reduce the computational cost this thesis derives sensitivity factors estimating the effect of a power change on the system state of an integrated energy system. To derive the sensitivity factors a joined quasi-steady-state power flow calculation method for integrated energy systems is developed extending existing steady-state approaches. For this, the system state of the electric power system, district heating system, and gas system is determined simultaneously, directly representing their interactions. To include the dynamic behavior a gradient method is proposed, which allows temperature and calorific value changes to be tracked in a coupled power flow calculation. The gradient method can accurately depict the dynamic behavior in the joined quasi-steady-state power flow calculation method even with simulation time increments of up to 60 min. Hence, compared to existing methods larger simulation time increments can be chosen to reach the same accuracy, leading to a reduced computation time. The sensitivity factors are on average ten times faster in estimating a new system state after a unit's power change compared to a power flow calculation. Besides the high computational efficiency, they can provide good estimates considering the complexity of the interactions and the dynamic behavior in an integrated energy system. As the joined quasi-steady-state power flow calculation method is based on the steady-state analysis existing use cases can be easily extended to consider the full potential of integrated energy systems. Therefore, the thesis provides system operators with a method to accurately analyze the full potential of Integrated energy systems

Grünes Wachstum durch Hochschulbildung: Der Ansatz des EGEA Projekts

    No full text
Education for sustainable development is internationally recognized as an important mechanism for sustainable processes and a transformation towards an economy that conserves resources and acts environmentally sound. Shifting paradigms towards so-called "green growth" and a "green economy" can only be achieved by raising awareness at all levels of education, both formal and informal. In its curricula and the didactic approach of teaching concepts, higher education varies significantly from other learning situations and has the most potential to bring about a sustainable, broad empowerment of citizens and actors in political and economic decision-making with scientifically founded, sustainability-related content. The EU Erasmus+ project EGEA („Enhancing Green Economy in Three Countries of Asia“, 2018-2581 598470), in the area of Capacity Building in Higher Education, addresses this theory and develops and evaluates modules with and for higher education institutions from three Asian countries in four core disciplines. This action-oriented pedagogical approach supposes a catalytic effect of the universities sending graduates into the world who are able and willing to affect the future in a sustainable way and furthermore a transformative effect of their Third Mission

Akzeptanz Lernender gegenüber Learning Analytics: Untersuchung des Einflusses der individuellen Technikeinstellung

    No full text

Benchmarking of glyph-based visualization concepts for fourth-order tensors using von Mises plasticity and Ogden hyperelasticity

    No full text
The visualization of higher-order tensors receives increasing attention, because they carry important information in many areas of mechanics as well as physics, medicine,or earth sciences. Higher-order tensors challenge any visualization method due to their higher number of coefficients compared to scalars, vectors, or second-order tensors. In this article, we focus on the stiffness tensor and compare four glyph-based visualization methods. One glyph focuses on the deformation modes, another on the plane waves, the third one on the anisotropy types, and the last one focuses on the uniaxial stiffness (or compliance) of the material. The visualization methods are compared using two different examples. The first example is an elastic-plastic thick-walled hollow sphere under pressure loading and the second example describes an indentation test, where a spherical indenter is pressed into a soft biological material. Both advantages and problems of the selected methods are discussed. Special emphasis is placed on the case of a singular stiffness tensor indicating a type of instability. As it is shown, the visualization method must be chosen with care to extract the relevant information from the tensor in a reliable way

The article presents interim results of the transdisciplinary BMBF joint research project KlimaInnoGovernance (2018-2022), which is conducting research on the transformation of local and regional energy systems in the region of Northern Hesse. The focus is on questions regarding municipal and regional options for an optimized energetic bioenergy production based on the use of residual and waste materials. Findings to date show that a reliable assessment of biomass potentials requires the inclusion of regional knowledge. Currently a significant portion of regional biomass potential is tied up in highly fragmented utilization pathways, which, however, need to be reviewed from an ecological perspective and against the background of an upcoming carbon dioxide pricing. For the optimization of biomass utilization pathways, it is becoming apparent that promising approaches can be achieved through inter-municipal cooperation and governance innovations

Heatmap-based Decision Support for Repositioning in Ride-Sharing Systems

    No full text
In ride-sharing systems, platform providers aim to distribute the drivers in the city to meet current and potential future demand and to avoid service cancellations. Ensuring such distribution is particularly challenging in the case of a crowdsourced fleet, as drivers are not centrally controlled but are free to decide where to reposition when idle. Thus, providers look for alternative ways to ensure a vehicle distribution that benefits both users and drivers, and consequently the provider. We propose an intuitive means to improve idle ride-sharing vehicles\u27 repositioning: repositioning opportunity heatmaps. These heatmaps highlight driver-specific earning opportunities approximated based on the expected future demand, fleet distribution, and location of the specific driver. Based on the heatmaps, drivers make decentralized yet better-informed repositioning decisions. As our heatmap policy changes the driver distribution, we propose an adaptive learning algorithm for designing our heatmaps in large-scale ride-sharing systems. We simulate the system and generate heatmaps based on previously learned repositioning opportunities in every iteration. We then update these based on the simulation\u27s outcome and use the updated values in the next iteration. We test our heatmap design in a comprehensive case study on New York ride-sharing data. We show that carefully designed heatmaps reduce service cancellations therefore revenue loss for platform and drivers significantly
