Alex’s Blues; An exploration of the confluence of IDM and Jazz, given current sociopolitics

    No full text
This body of research examines the artistic development of its author through the research of various facets of the music creation process. The main goal of this research is to create the music of an album fusing electronic music with jazz improvisation in unique and innovative ways, while simultaneously speaking on the issues that arise from the current late-stage capitalism that affects the working class. To accomplish this goal, capitalism and current American politics are examined, niche sound design softwares are explored, techniques for recording and mixing are discussed, and strategies for building a dedicated fan base are investigated. This final point will allow the artist to use the material created to effectively distribute their music and their ideas, spreading class-consciousness and pushing the boundaries of musical genres.https://remix.berklee.edu/graduate-studies-contemporary-performance/1326/thumbnail.jp

    Garden of the Asylum

    No full text
Garden of the Asylum is a multi-disciplinary live music performance that merges music and visual storytelling. More than a tribute to Van Gogh’s art, it is an exploration of art, emotion, and the human psyche. As co-producers, we draw inspiration from Van Gogh’s emotional world, using music to retell his passion for artistic expression and the strong emotions that shaped his artworks and continue to resonate today. In an era of rapid change, more people experience similar psychological states. Through this performance, we seek to build a bridge where audiences do not merely observe art but engage with it on a personal level—seeing their own emotions reflected and experiencing how art becomes a medium for emotional connection and self-exploration. Using a garden as a metaphor, we envision Van Gogh’s emotions blooming like flowers in his mental landscape, taking form through music, visuals, and lighting. The performance unfolds in three interconnected movements—Solitude, Self-Doubt, and Paranoia—each led by a musician (JOSEPH, Jilly!, and Kéquetz) whose original compositions not only interpret Van Gogh’s emotions but also reflect their own artistic and personal experiences. Each section begins with a visual or soundscape piece, serving as a transition that immerses the audience in the upcoming emotional state. The stage design integrates scrim projection, multi-layer lighting, and immersive soundscape, enhancing the emotional depth of the performance.https://remix.berklee.edu/graduate-studies-cmat/1181/thumbnail.jp

Self-described as “goofy slut-rock,” Jilly both pulls at the heartstrings and keeps a conversational, high-energy vibe. With female and queer storytelling at the forefront, Jilly strives to merge the bright, energetic drive of punk-rock with the general digestibility, lyrical sensibility, and catchy melodies of pop. Consisting of two heart-wrenching breakup ballads, one cheeky hookup banger, one adrenaline-fueled introspection, and a half-breakup/half-hookup single, Stronger Feelings explores Jilly’s favorite emotions. From heartbreak and novelty to wild stories and self-indulgences, this EP takes the listener on a rollercoaster of ups, downs, and loop-de-loops via interpersonal and intrapersonal relationships.https://remix.berklee.edu/graduate-studies-cmat/1155/thumbnail.jp

As Head of Distribution, Production, and New Business for Disrupción Records, I held cross-functional responsibilities spanning digital song uploads, live and virtual event programming, and day-to-day business operations. I worked closely with The Orchard to distribute our music catalog and establish strategic release timelines. I also led outreach to identify new business opportunities and successfully programmed eight unique showcases and industry events throughout the academic year. Highlights included a Women’s History Month interview with legendary publicist Yvette Noel Schure and our End-of-Year Showcase. In this role, I collaborated with seven peers across different departments to manage label operations. This experience greatly strengthened my leadership, organization, and industry networking skills, ultimately helping me secure an internship at Audiomack.https://remix.berklee.edu/graduate-studies-global-entertainment-business/1423/thumbnail.jp

    Electroental

    No full text
This project blended traditional Middle Eastern instruments and tuning systems with electronic music to create a cross-cultural sonic experience. Instruments such as the ney and the Armenian duduk were recorded live and integrated into electronic compositions using microtonal synthesis and contemporary production techniques. The project addressed the underrepresentation of modal and microtonal scales in electronic music, specifically Saba, Rast, and Bayati. Electronic elements were tailored to accommodate the expressive capacity of Middle Eastern melodic frameworks, particularly maqamat. Synthesizers were customized to replicate traditional scales, while acoustic recordings contributed timbral richness and authenticity. This project presented an alternative to Orientalist tropes by embedding traditional musical systems within modern electronic structures. It proposed a respectful and innovative reflection of Middle Eastern culture through a sound design approach.https://remix.berklee.edu/graduate-studies-production-technology/1410/thumbnail.jp

    Amatxo Maitia

For my last project at this master, I decided to pay tribute to my mother’s family–her parents, her brother and, of course, her – and compose a piece that would honor their memory based on some old video recordings of them. When thinking about the people you hold dearest to your heart, memory is a double-edged sword, for it can bring both joy and sorrow. Therefore, I wanted to try and navigate all those feelings in this piece; trying to not only feel nostalgic for the past but also cherish it and celebrate the people they were and the lives they lived. In order to do this project, I wanted to prepare myself as much as possible and write something that would match the period the videos were based on. Therefore, I did a lot of research for references and music scores of music from that time. Thanks to this final project, as I had to work on it during most of the academic year, I learned a lot about my composing tools – both academic and digital techniques – and the importance of having a solid pre-production stage before writing music.https://remix.berklee.edu/graduate-studies-scoring/1306/thumbnail.jp
