No full textFor my Culminating Experience project, Shifting Perspectives: A Musical Exploration of My Experience as a Woman in Jazz Education, I wrote, arranged, and recorded five compositions reflecting on my experience growing up as a young female trumpet player. The narrative of these compositions present an alternative to the narrative of jazz standards from the “Great American Songbook”. My objective with this project is to create space for young women to see their stories as important enough to be a part of jazz music.
I wanted to address issues with the “Great American Songbook”, the tunes I grew up learning, the misrepresentation of the role of women in jazz history, and the unacknowledged social system that I experienced in jazz education, that resulted in the isolation of young women in these spaces. I decided to write music that explores these issues, and drives a shift in perspective.
The compositions in my project speak to who young women are in their lives now—their feelings, worries, and dreams of who they want to become. No full textThrough this project, my goal was to music that allows me to connect my experience of being a musician from India, with a background in Hindustani Classical and North Indian folk music, who was later exposed to Jazz and Black American music. I wanted to explore connections in these forms of music that already exist – with their emphasis on improvisation and the spiritual connection to music. While many American Jazz musicians have made the journey to India to draw these connections, I aimed to explore this from the perspective of a female musician who grew up in India. The genesis of a creative tool starting from interdisciplinarity
No full textThis work explores the relationship between music and architecture, proposing a conceptual album that intertwines these two art forms through the lens of phenomenology. Rooted in a background of diverse artistic influences, the project aims to translate architectural concepts into musical compositions, reflecting the notion of promenade as theorized by Le Corbusier.
Through this interdisciplinary approach, the thesis not only theorizes on the connections between art forms but also materializes these ideas into a tangible body of work. The project introduces a new artistic identity, Cuero, symbolizing the fusion of diverse artistic visions. This identity serves as a mediator, enabling a unique dialogue between the creator and the creation, and illustrating the profound interplay between subjectivity and artistic expression.

From Band Member to Artist; Regional Mexican Music
No full textAs a Mexican-American from Dallas, Texas, USA, I grew up in a country that had very little in common with my parents’ home. Nonetheless, I always felt more connected to Mexican culture, especially its music. Although I was a classically trained violinist, I found my true passion for music when I started to play and sing Mariachi music, one of Mexico’s proudest genres within Regional Mexican music. I am happy to have such an exciting career in Mariachi music thus far. I have performed in some incredible venues in the United States such as the Crypto.com Arena (formerly known as the Staples Center), Footprint Center, and the Sandia Casino & Resort with Mexican artists such as Los Tigres del Norte, Larry Hernandez, and Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán. These performances helped me develop as a bend member at the highest level. And although there are many responsibilities that come with being a great band member, this project explores my first experiences as band leader. By discovering the artistic responsibilities of leading a band, I found different creative ways to enhance my musicianship through songwriting, arranging, and harmony. Prior to my studies at Berklee, I wanted to be a session musician. Now I find myself striving to become an artist, songwriter, and music producer. The Come Up
No full text“The Come Up is a culminating experience that encapsulates my journey as an artist through a project steeped in sample-based production. The concept is deeply rooted in the rich musical traditions of the 1970s, 80s, and 90s, aiming to recapture the authenticfeeling and soul of music from those eras. In crafting this project, I employed classic techniques such as a one-take approach and a method known as micro-sampling. This involves taking an unrecognizable snippet from a pre-existing song and integrating it into my production, ensuring the sample is nearly undetectable and mitigating the complexities of sample clearance when executed thoughtfully. The project comprises five songs, all of which I produced, performed, wrote, and mixed myself, with recording assistance from my good friend Sebastian Ontenada. Lyrically, the come up reflects my current stage in the artistic journey and my aspirations for the future. It offers listeners a glimpse into my life and experiences as I navigate the challenges and triumphs of my artistic ascent. the cover art, predominantly red, was chosen deliberately to symbolize exuberance, a quality that mirrors both my personality and the vibrant energy of my music. The color red reinforces the spirited and dynamic nature of the project, highlighting the enthusiasm and passion that drive my creative process. It draws inspiration from lively K-pop sounds and at the same time subverts some of the usual expectations of K-Pop. The relatable lyrics reflect my personal feelings and experiences, resonating deeply with listeners. Each track explores themes of love, loss, and self-discovery, enhancing the emotional connection. Oddity stands out by incorporating sound effects, creatively manipulated through modulation effects like pitch shifters and shapers, transforming everyday noises into integral parts of the music. It uses modern synth techniques and advanced audio manipulation, including sampling and warping. It also uses vintage effects such as saturators and vintage tape to add depth and texture. Meticulous layering ensures each element finds its place within the mix, creating a dynamic audio landscape.
