Simple Songs: “How to compose music with a simple groove and melody”
This project aims to enrich my different musical identities as an artist. I will produce a personal EP as a performer, composer, producer, etc. Composing and producing are new attempts for me. I will develop and explore new identities while consolidating the existing foundation and expanding more career possibilities. The EP contains 4 songs in total. The content of the songs is a complete storyline, which tells about my learning and growth experience in Berklee this year, as well as my yearning and expectations for the future. The themes of songwriting are all derived from the simple melodies and rhythms I created when playing and practicing bass, and they are developed into a complete whole. I hope to have my own representative works and show my ideas through performance and production. The method used in my project belongs to the field of performance research. I expressed all my inner thoughts in my works, and experienced many choices and difficulties in the creative process. These works are the final result of my continuous thinking and practice. At the same time, they also cultivated my ability to think from multiple angles, and finally completed these works with warm power.https://remix.berklee.edu/graduate-studies-contemporary-performance/1338/thumbnail.jp
Seasonal Affection: Time, Doubt, Fear, and a Reclamation of Self
This project aims to establish my artistic identity as a singer-songwriter while documenting the creation of my first release, from conception to completion. It also explores how I navigate being a female artist with ADHD. Within this scope, I share the origins and inspirations behind seven of my compositions, detail how I developed their arrangements, and describe the recording process. Additionally, I reflect on the exploration of my visual identity and outline my plans for releasing the work. I address the fears and insecurities I faced at the start of this journey and explain how collaboration with other artists, musicians, engineers, and producers helped me overcome many of these challenges.https://remix.berklee.edu/graduate-studies-contemporary-performance/1336/thumbnail.jp
Karrion (Looking at Faces)
Before coming to Berklee, I didn’t have a very strong musical identity or personal brand. I had just left my job as a programmer and my indie band in San Francisco to move to New York, and I had only released two songs as my EDM artist project, Karrion. This past year at BerkleeNYC has been a huge transformation. I went from feeling unsure of what I wanted to do with my music to building a solid foundation as an artist with a unique sound and a vision for the future. I’m really proud of the six singles I created for my CE Project, which I grouped together as an EP called Looking at Faces, although I plan to release them only as standalone singles that all fit within my sound.https://remix.berklee.edu/graduate-studies-cmat/1156/thumbnail.jp
Garden of the Asylum
Garden of the Asylum is a multi-disciplinary live music performance that merges music and visual storytelling. More than a tribute to Van Gogh’s art, it is an exploration of art, emotion, and the human psyche. As co-producers, we draw inspiration from Van Gogh’s emotional world, using music to retell his passion for artistic expression and the strong emotions that shaped his artworks and continue to resonate today. In an era of rapid change, more people experience similar psychological states. Through this performance, we seek to build a bridge where audiences do not merely observe art but engage with it on a personal level—seeing their own emotions reflected and experiencing how art becomes a medium for emotional connection and self-exploration. Using a garden as a metaphor, we envision Van Gogh’s emotions blooming like flowers in his mental landscape, taking form through music, visuals, and lighting. The performance unfolds in three interconnected movements—Solitude, Self-Doubt, and Paranoia—each led by a musician (JOSEPH, Jilly!, and Kéquetz) whose original compositions not only interpret Van Gogh’s emotions but also reflect their own artistic and personal experiences. Each section begins with a visual or soundscape piece, serving as a transition that immerses the audience in the upcoming emotional state. The stage design integrates scrim projection, multi-layer lighting, and immersive soundscape, enhancing the emotional depth of the performance.https://remix.berklee.edu/graduate-studies-cmat/1179/thumbnail.jp
All My Friends
This project is an exploration of the Irish folklore/storytelling tradition, channelled through the modern, rebellious and DIY aesthetic of alternative music. All My Friends began as a thought experiment on forging a world of characters, each personifying a different facet of one’s personality. It was a way of creating distance between a writer and his writing, allowing the songs to take on their own lives and be free of the self-consciousness inherent in the documentation of one’s adolescence. Somewhere along the course of this year, this record developed into an exploration of lost youth, mine and those of my closest friends and family. The “Friends” became the keepers of stories of people that I have known, versions of myself, and imagined voices that helped me understand the world around me. Using a combination of traditional folk instruments and modern sounds and techniques, a wide ranging tale was spun, with overarching themes and characters, all brought together but a singular voice.https://remix.berklee.edu/graduate-studies-cmat/1160/thumbnail.jp
