The presence of Lusophony in the epistemic field of Communication Sciences: 10 years of themed studies
Drawing up a survey of publications on lusophone themes in the field of Communication Sciences over the last 10 years (2007-2017) has made it possible to describe that scientific production and find that it has been increasing in volume. This scientific production is feminised and focuses on two voices, where Portugal and Brazil take on a predominant role, which contrasts with the state of citations in the field in general. Based on the themes examined, Lusocom emerges as the great think tank for Lusophone Studies in the Communication Sciences field. “The presence of Lusophony in the epistemic field of Communication Sciences” is an exploratory, descriptive study that takes a quantitative-qualitative approach, covering a sphere that comprises the conference proceedings of Sopcom, Ibercom and the Anuário Internacional de Comunicação Lusófona published by Lusocom. Of the total of 3.252 articles found, a sample of 142 were chosen, selected by theme, to form the basis for this study
Reasons and circumstances that lead to the non-use of media by young people and their families
This article argues for the need to pay attention to the dynamics of refusing and rejecting the use of media to better understand a highly mediatized consumer society. The theoretical background utilizes resistance to the media, family contexts of socialisation and mediated society. We analysed 18 interviews carried out in Portugal – undertaken as part of wider research project involving 40 young people and their families, on their relationship with the media regarding citizenship rights –, which showed signs of non-use of media. This article characterises these individuals, their contexts and motives. Through identifying refusal of the internet, social networks, news and television, we arrive at distinct five types: “I do not like and I do not want to use”; “At this stage of life, no!”; “Split between I can’t have and I can’t buy it”; “I don’t want to draw attention to myself and don’t want to get ‘hooked’”; and “Doing something different and doing it better”
Notes on Communication research epistemology and methods
This text weaves some aspects of research in Communication starting from the philosophy of knowledge as a basis for understanding science. It aims to discuss the issue of scientific research in the epistemological perspective, to consider the importance of scientific methodology in its methodical and technical dimensions, as well as to reflect on aspects of the research carried out in Latin America and more specifically in Brazil. It is a theoretical approach based on a non-systematic and non-exhaustive literature review. The existence of thematic and methodological diversity is examined, as well as the apparent tendency of the research to focus on the novelty, mainly in regards to elements related to technology, as object of study. The urgency of strengthening research in Communication is also considered, both theoretical and empirical, and the necessary advance in the design and description of research methods and techniques when presenting results and analyzes
Epistemology, methods and theories of communication in the Big Data Era: a critical panorama of social media research
This paper proposes a critical reflection on the epistemological, methodological and theoretical implications of the researches based on Big Data – especially on social media data – for the scientific field of communication. From an epistemological point of view, it reveals the unsustainability of analytical models based on static frameworks of communication, claiming that the sociasl processes that emerge with the influence of the internet are unequivocally presented in fluid and contingent formats. In this context, it highlights that the evolution of technology itself has the potential to boost the construction of data collection and analysis tools capable of grasping the communication movements, justifying the need for alignment between ontology, epistemology and methodology in scientific research. The text, also, poses questions about communication theory and its concepts. It is believed that the relevance acquired by data in recent years should not point to a domain of the empirical over the theoretical. Effectively, the strengthening of the communication science demands precision and care with the use of terms, models and theoretical references historically consolidated in the problematization and explanation of the contemporary
Portuguese-speaking countries and the challenge of a technological circumnavigation
In this article, I propose the assumption that we are making a technological journey, analogous in many respects to European ocean voyages of the 15th and 16th centuries (Martins, 2015a, 2017, 2018a, 2018b). Thus, I confront the technological nature of the current financial globalization and the commercial nature of European maritime expansion. Whereas the first journey resulted in the colonization of peoples and nations, in the second journey we moved, in a century and a half, to that which Edgar Morin called the “colonization of the spirit” of the entire human community (Morin, 1962). Within this context, I took into consideration the consequences, for culture, of the acceleration of the time via technology, which has mobilized human beings, “totally” (Jünger, 1930) and “infinitely” (Sloterdijk, 2010), in view of the urgencies of the present (Martins, 2010). On the other hand, I will use post-colonial studies to situate transnational and transcultural identities, by examining Portuguese-speaking communities within the context of the “battle of languages,” to use an expression coined by Mozambican linguist Armando Jorge Lopes (2004). This is why I will consider “technological circumnavigation” (Martins, 2015a, 2017, 2018a, 2018b), to be undertaken by every Portuguese-speaking country, like a fight for the world’s symbolic ordering (Bourdieu, 1977, 1979, 1982), where we raise hegemony language-related problems and those pertaining to political, scientific, cultural and artistic subordination (Martins, 2015b). This is, therefore an electronic journey, using sites, portals, social media, digital repositories and archives, as well as virtual museums. What’s more, the viewpoint adopted is that which states a great language of cultures and thinking, such as Portuguese, likewise cannot avoid being a great language of human and scientific knowledge
