Mutiara Farmers Group has marketed palm sugar products offline and online. However, online marketing is still not optimal. Therefore, this study aims to analyze online marketing and consumer responses to the Mutiara Farmers Group\u27s palm sugar. The study was conducted in June-October 2024 using an interview method using a questionnaire and analyzed qualitatively. The results of this study obtained that 45 percent of respondents bought palm sugar online (WhatsApp) and 55 percent around the Payakumbuh and Pekanbaru areas offline. Online marketing is still limited because the distance of the palm sugar factory is far from the shipping location. All respondents chose palm sugar because it is pure palm sugar. Therefore, there needs to be a palm sugar storage warehouse near the shipping location

Impacts of Authentic Assessments in Biology on the Learning of Grade 11 Students

Authentic assessments were used during the Covid-19 lockdown but since the educational environment is returning to its usual configuration, such assessments appear to be still useful in learning biology. To prove this claim, this research aimed to determine the impacts of authentic assessments in biology on Grade 11 students as well as to determine the students’ perceptions about authentic assessments. One hundred two (102) Filipino students at a public high school for SY 2022-2023 made up the participants which comprised the three (3) sections of the STEAM curriculum. This involved a qualitative design where observations were documented following the impacts identified by previous authors. On student perceptions, responses in the interview were subjected to thematic analysis. In poem writing, the impacts include cognition activation and development, vocabulary and literacy skills improvement, and self-expression. Comic strip’s impact is promotion of scientific literacy. Improvement of scientific skills is the impact for brochure making, modeling, role playing, case study analysis, infographics and mind mapping. Results show that students\u27 perceptions are favorable. With the results, teachers are encouraged to prepare more authentic assessments in biology teaching.  Likewise, this study should be carried out across other academic disciplines

Identification of Epithelial-mesenchymal Transition-related Genes and Potential Biomarkers for Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia using Bioinformatical Analysis

Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is a prevalent and serious disease among preterm newborns. Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) represents the biological process where cells switch from an epithelial to mesenchymal phenotype. Hyperoxia induces EMT in alveolar epithelial cells, which can affect alveolar development. However, the specific molecular mechanism of EMT in BPD remains incompletely unclear. In this study, the GSE108754 and GSE32472 datasets were merged and de-batched, with external validation from GSE188944 and GSE51039. Differentially Expressed Genes (DEGs) were screened, focusing on those associated with EMT using the GeneCards database, resulting in the identification of 213 overlapping genes. Weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) revealed that the turquoise module was strongly correlated with BPD, identifying 33 hub genes related to EMT in BPD patients. Utilizing support vector machine (SVM) and random forest recursive feature elimination (RF-RFE) methods, 17 potential biomarkers were assessed. Risk prediction performance was evaluated through a nomogram model and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. Notably, FLOT2, AQP9, SEMA4A, and CXCR1 emerged as vital genes, with RT-qPCR validation indicating their mRNA levels significantly increased in BPD. In summary, four biomarkers, FLOT2, AQP9, SEMA4A, and CXCR1, were potentially critical in BPD occurrence and progression, shedding novel light on diagnosing and treating BPD

The advance of digitization has transformed the gastronomy industry. This is particularly evident in digital ordering and payment systems. These systems offer restaurants the opportunity to optimize processes, operate in a more resource-efficient manner, and simultaneously increase customer satisfaction. This study examined the perception and acceptance of such systems, as well as their potential impact on sustainability, efficiency, and decision-making behavior. Using a comprehensive survey, data from over 1300 restaurant guests were collected. The results show a high level of acceptance of digital technologies, particularly in the areas of cashless payments and personalization of orders. Simultaneously, there is the potential to promote guests’ sustainable decisions through targeted functions. The analysis also shows that guests increasingly expect information on the sustainability of digital offers and that the use of digital feedback functions is limited to a smaller proportion of users. The study presents specific recommendations for the further development of digital systems, particularly in areas such as increasing efficiency, user friendliness, and sustainable consumer behavior.

Survival of the Fittest in Canadian Gothic Literature between: Ghetto and Garrison Mentality

This paper offers a study of some selected Asian-Canadian literary works that have capitalized, in Graham Huggan’s terms, “on their perceived marginality while helping turn marginality itself into a valuable intellectual commodity” [1:viii]. The study of contemporary Canadian literature has been marked by the emergence of various ethno-racial writers such as Hiromi Goto, Joy Kogawa and Gurjinder Basran. The focus of this study will be on three gothic narratives notably, Basran’s Everything Was Good-Bye (2010), Goto’s Chorus of Mushrooms (1994) and Kogawa’s Obasan (1981). The ethnic women writers selected, namely, Kogawa, Goto and Basran write their gothic novels based on their traumatic memories as dislocated Asian-Canadian minorities and their gloomy present as well. Such ethnic writers find themselves lost between various identities and this is what they seek to reflect through their female characters’ internal exile and their efforts to determine which identity they should have embraced in order to be accepted as Asian-Canadians with their in-between identities. This paper seeks to provide a critical analysis of the so called ‘The Canadian Theme of Survival’, or let us call it the survival of the fittest, and the paradoxical notion of ‘garrison mentality’ as represented in such Canadian gothic literature.

Within-Canopy Distribution of Incidence and Damage of Pests and Diseases of Robusta Coffee, Coffea Canephora and Implications for their Management

Due to its perennial and robust vegetative growth nature, the Robusta coffee harbors a diversity of pests and diseases that are not necessarily evenly distributed within the coffee canopy and this has management implications. We thus, conducted a study in a Kaweri Coffee Plantation Limited in central Uganda to determine the distribution of incidence and damage caused by the pests and diseases within the Robusta coffee canopy. In each of the four section of plantation (Kitagweta, Kyamutuma Luwunga and Nonve), a plot measuring 100 x 100 m was demarcated and 20 Robusta coffee trees were systematically selected along two diagonals in each of the plots. All the stems on each of the selected coffee tree were assessed for pest and disease incidence and damage on the leaves, berry clusters and berries. The coffee canopy was divided into three sections (lower, middle and upper) and incidence and damage of the pests and diseases were determined on coffee leaves, berry clusters and berries. Results showed that the pests and diseases were not evenly distributed within the canopy. On the leaves, the incidence and damage caused by Leucoptera coffeella, Leucoplema dohertyi and Hemilleia vastatrix varied significantly (p?0.05) across the canopy sections, with the highest levels (23.1, 36.1 and 30.5%) being recorded in the lower section. On the other hand, though the damage caused by Epicampoptera andersoni and the leaf eating beetles was not significantly (p?0.05) different within the canopy, the highest infestation was recorded in the upper (26.9%) and middle (19.3%) sections, respectively. For the berry cluster, only damage caused by Planococcus spp. varied significantly (p=0.0188) across the canopy, with the highest infestation (18.6%) being recorded in lower section. However, incidence and damage caused by Prophantis smaragdina and Cercospora coffeicola were not significantly (p?0.05) different within the canopy but, the highest levels were recorded in the upper section of the canopy (15.8 and 24.4%, respectively). On the coffee berries, the incidence and damage of both Hypothenemus hampei and Cercospora coffeicola did not significantly (p?0.05) across the canopy sections but the highest levels were recorded in the lower (28.5%) and upper (20.7%), respectively. Our findings enlightened the understanding of the vertical distribution of the incidence and damage of pest and disease within the Robusta coffee canopy. This information will contribute to developing and implementing monitoring techniques and regimes as well as ecologically-informed management strategies for these pests and diseases
