The aim of this study was to determine chemistry teachers’ and students’ level of awareness, perceptions, attitudes, and practices of twenty-first century skills (21st-CS) in chemistry education in the government secondary schools (grades 9 & 10) of Addis Ababa City Administration. The high school students of developing countries were not being taught as 21st learning required. Students learn the abstract concepts of chemistry with pure lecture and teachers struggle with pen and pencil, chalk and backboard to teach the theoretical concepts of chemistry. The mixed methods embedded design was employed in data collection and analysis. The chemistry teachers and students had moderate awareness, high perceptions, high and positive attitudes towards practices of 21st-CS. Despite practices of 21st-CS were only moderate among participants. However, the descriptive statistics results not substantiated by the qualitative results. These imply that the implementation of 21st-CS had not get equal emphasis as content knowledge. This research  findings inform all levels of education actors from school to Ministry of Education about implementation of 21st-CS in secondary schools to give equal emphasis for both content knowledge and soft skills

Design Modifications to Reduce a Brushless Exciter Response Time

    Get PDF
As an alternative to converting a brushless exciter to static excitation in order to improve an exciter’s response time, conversion of the existing conventional brushless exciter is possible. A high initial response (HIR) brushless excitation system has the ability to force its output to ceiling voltage in 0.1 second or less, which is a response time similar to a static excitation system. To achieve the required fast response time, various modifications to the existing exciter components are required, including the ac exciter stator, permanent magnet generator (PMG), and voltage regulator. This paper describes those required modifications and associated technical information. This paper presents a concept solution that decreases the response time of a brushless exciter in order to respond to grid disturbances via the excitation system, while minimizing modification of the existing excitation system configuration.

    Get PDF
Recently endocrine disorders have become a big concern. Endocrine-disrupting chemicals are contaminants interfering with hormone biosynthesis, metabolism, or change how the endocrine system works. Bisphenol A is an endocrine disruptor having weak estrogenic activity and competes with body native estrogen. Polycarbonate containers are known to be major sources of bisphenol A that leaches to the container’s content through hydrolysis. This study aimed at monitoring levels of bisphenol A exposure to polycarbonate users through a novel spectrophotometric technique. The polycarbonate samples used were baby feeding bottles and portable water bottles. The Spectroscopic method employed a diazotization reaction procedure resulting in the formation of yellow azo-dye that is easily detected using UV-Vis spectroscopy. Prior to use, the sampled ‘suspected’ polycarbonate bottles were verified to be Polycarbonate using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The Fourier transform infrared spectra of thin plastic solids were identified by scanning between, 500-4000 cm-1 for characterization. The resulting spectra were compared with those of standard polycarbonate plastics reported in the literature. Characteristic polycarbonate peaks at 2970, 1970, 1504, 1187, 1013, 1079 cm-1 associated with the –C-H, C=O, C=O, O-C-O, -CH3 stretching vibrations respectively confirmed sampled bottles were polycarbonates.  Bisphenol A levels for all the sampled polycarbonate bottles in the various environments ranged between 0.17 – 2.82 µgmL-1.  All the samples surpassed the tolerable daily intake for BPA of 4 ?g/kgbw/day recommended by the European Food Safety Authority and this calls for serious consideration

Rural households are very important and are actually the bedrock in the drive to fight poverty, hunger, the attainment of improved gross national product (GDP) and sustainable food security. The advent of COVID-19 in 2019 really hampered peoples’ health and livelihood activities. Therefore, this study assessed the rural households’ disposition towards vaccination against COVID-19 pandemic in Oyo State, Nigeria. The specific objectives were to: describe socioeconomic characteristics of the rural households in the study area, identify the underpinning factors associated with the effects on livelihood activities of the rural households during COVID-19 pandemic, determine rural households’ dispositions towards COVID-19 vaccination, and identify the constraints against COVID-19 vaccination in rural areas. The hypothesis was that there is no significant relationship between constraints and rural farming households’ disposition towards vaccination against COVID-19 vaccination. Multistage sampling procedure was used to select 364 core rural households. It was revealed that the mean age was 45 years. Nationality/tribe revealed that 77.7% were indigenes while 22.3% were non-indigenes. All (100%) the respondents affirmed that they got their information on COVID-19 from radio. All (100%) the respondents asserted that imposition of restrictions on movements was the actual major factor that really affected all activities in their areas. Also, all (100%) the respondents affirmed that nobody was hospitalized and there was no any case of death due to COVID-19 infection in their areas. Furthermore, all (100%) the respondents held the belief that rural people cannot contract COVID-19 at first instance, hence vaccination was not needed. Regression analysis established that constraints of trekking long distance and phobia for vaccine were significantly related to rural households’ disposition towards vaccination against covid-19 pandemic in Oyo State. Therefore, government and all health stakeholders should device strong means of persuasion to convince the rural people about the health implications and importance of vaccines and other equally crucial health improvement programmes. Rural people should also be encouraged to embrace orthodox medical practices alongside their traditional medicine

    Get PDF
The use of remote sensing to monitor coastal waters and their current state is of high importance, as fresh waters are the habitat of many species of flora and fauna, and are also important for anthropogenic activities. Water quality can be monitored by many parameters, including dissolved suspended matter, phytoplankton, water colour (FU), and dissolved oxygen, while the concentration of Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) is a representative indicator for proxy phytoplankton and monitoring water quality. The detection of phytoplankton in water layers, through Chl-a indicators, is an effective method for displaying eutrophication.Numerous scientists and studies have shown that remote sensing data and techniques are capable of monitoring the temporal and spatial distribution and variation of this phenomenon. This study aimed to investigate the monitoring of waters quality in Diégo-Suarez Bay, in Antsiranana, Madagascar with the application of Chl-a detection algorithm (C2RCC-C2X-Net), by using Sentinel-2 satellite imagery data for the seasons summer (February 14), winter (June 16) and inter-season time (22 October) 2023. The maximum chlorophyll index (MCI) algorithms have been applied to top of atmosphere (TOA) reflectance data, to detect Chl-a and monitor the trophic range of the water. Both algorithms were correlated and resulted in Pearson’s r values up to 0.82. Finally, the Chl-a concentration was estimated by applying an empirical equation that correlates the MCI and Chl-a concentration developed within previous studies. Those results were further analyzed and interpreted with spatial statistical methods, to understand the spatial distribution pattern of the quality and proxy of biomass phytoplanktonic in our study area. Our results demonstrated that the highest Chl-a concentration was located in the South-west southeast of the Diégo-Suarez Bay during the study period. Sentinel-2 data can be a useful tool for lake managers, in order to estimate the spatial distribution of the Chl-a concentration and identify areas prone to eutrophication, as well as the coastal zones

    Get PDF
This research aims to redesign the hatch on a 30 GT pure seine fishing vessel made from fiberglass. The hatch is designed using a separate hatch construction system from the ship\u27s construction, so that when the ship has an accident and sinks the hatch can be separated from the ship\u27s rafters and used as a safety device. The method used in this research is the numerical simulation method. The calculations carried out include calculating the volume of the hold, the total weight of the hold construction materials when empty, the maximum capacity of the hold to accommodate caught fish and the buoyancy capacity when the ship\u27s crew (ABK) rests on the hold. The construction calculations used use the Indonesian Classification Bureau (BKI) class calculations which include dividing the distance between the transverse trusses as reinforcement for the hatch walls. The research results show that fish hatches can be used as additional safety equipment on ships using the principle of buoyancy possessed by these hatches
