REDUCING TOXICITY AND INCREASING EFFICIENCY: ACONITINE WITH LIQUIRITIN AND GLYCYRRHETINIC ACID REGULATE CALCIUM REGULATORY PROTEINS IN RAT MYOCARDIAL CELL
Background: Compatibility of Radix Aconiti Carmichaeli and Liquorice is known to treat heart diseases such as heart
failure and cardiac arrhythmias. This work answers the question that whether the active components (Aconitine,
Liquiritin and Glycyrrhetinic Acid) of Radix Aconiti Carmichaeli and Liquorice could result in regulating intracellular
calcium homeostasis and calcium cycling, and thereby verifies the therapeutic material basis.
Materials and Methods: The myocardial cells were divided into twelve groups randomly as control group, Aconitine
group, nine different dose groups that orthogonal combined with Aconitine, Liquiritin and Glycyrrhetinic Acid, and
Verapamil group. The myocardial cellular survival rate and morphology were assessed. The expression of calcium
regulation protein(RyR2、NCX1、DHPR-a1) in the myocardial cell by Western-blotting.
Results: The results exhibited that Aconitine (120 uM) significantly damaged on myocardial cell, decreased the
survival rate and expression of Na+/Ca2+ exchangers (NCX1) and dihydropteridine reducta-α1 (DHPR-a1), and
increased the expression of ryanodine receptor type2 (RyR2) obviously. The compatibility groups (Aconitine, Liquiritin
and Glycyrrhetinic Acid) all could against the damage on the myocardial cell by Aconitine at different levels.
Conclusion: Aconitine with Liquiritin and Glycyrrhetinic Acid may regulate the expression of calcium-regulated
proteins to protect myocardial cells from damage
TRADITIONAL KNOWLEDGE OF MEDICINAL PLANTS IN TRIBES OF TRIPURA IN NORTHEAST, INDIA
Background: The present study was carried out in Mandwi area and its outskirts of Tripura district of tribal areas
Autonomous district council to document the available ethno-medicinal plants and their traditional application among
Mandwi tribes.
Methodology: Field explorations were carried out during the months of March-June 2013. The ethno-medicinal survey was
conducted particularly with Tripuri tribe in Mandai area, with the help of local medicine men, locally known as bhoidho
(Tripuri). Data were collected through structure questionnaires and observations during the field visits.
Results: In the present study the local population used a total of 51 plant species belonging to 32 families to cure a variety
of diseases. Of the 51 plants, 21 were herbs, followed by trees (17) and shrubs (8). Climbers and ferns had reported 2
species for each one grass species was found. Fabaceae was the dominant family with the highest number of species (6)
followed by Asteracae (4 species) and Lamiaceae (5 species). Seven other families had 2 species each and 22 families were
represented by a single species. In case single diseases, the highest number of plants (7 species) was used for dysentery,
followed by body pain (6 species), cough (6 species) and toothache (6 species).
Conclusion: The present study concluded that, the Tripuri tribes of the study area possess rich knowledge on the medicinal
plants and their utilization. Thus the present study focuses on the documentation of the traditional knowledge of these
valuable plants, which could enhance the potential of these medicinal plants to other communities as well and by
understanding the importance, other communities can also be helpful for conservation of these resources for further use
POSSIBLE HYPOCHOLESTEROLEMIC EFFECT OF GINGER AND ROSEMARY OILS IN RATS
Background: Hypercholesterolemia is a major risk factor for development of atherosclerosis. The present study was conducted to evaluate the potential effect of ginger oil alone or combined with rosemary oil as hypocholesterolemic agent in rats fed high fat diet.
Materials and methods: Healthy female albino rats (n=80) weighting about (150-180 g) were included in this study divided into two equal groups; Group (I): were fed on the basal diet. Group (I) were divided into 4 subgroups each 10: Group (Ia): negative control. Group (Ib): Rats received i.p 2.5 g/Kg b.w of ginger oil. Group (Ic): rats received i.p 2.5 g/Kg b.w of rosemary oil. Group (Id): Rats received i.p 5 g/Kg b.w mixture of ginger oil and rosemary oil (1:1). The second main groups; Group (II): high fat diet (HFD) were fed on the basal diet plus cholesterol (1%), bile salt (0.25%) and animal fat (15%) to induce hypercholesterolemia for six weeks. Group (II) was divided into 4subgroups: Group (IIa): HFD. Group (IIb): HFD were treated with i.p 2.5 g/Kg b.w ginger oil. Group (IIc): (n=10) HFD were treated with i.p 2.5 g/Kg b.w rosemary oil. Group (IId): (n=10) HFD were treated with i.p 5 g/Kg b.w mixture of oils.
Results: It was found that HFD rats showed a significant elevation in glucose, total cholesterol, triglyceride, GOT, GPT, alkaline phosphatase and a reduction in serum HDL-c compared with negative control. Treatment with ginger oil, rosemary oil and their mixture modulated the elevation of these parameters. Histopathological examination of the liver tissue of HFD rats showed a lipid deposition and macrophage infiltration and stenosis of hepatic vein. Treatment with mixture oils preserves normal structure of liver.
Conclusion: It was concluded that, hypocholesterolemic effect was related to the active oil content as Rosemary oil contain - α-pinene, Camphor, cineole, borneol and Ginger oil contain Linalool, Terpineol ,Borneol , Eucalyptol
EFFECT OF A SHORT PERIOD WHOLE BODY VIBRATION WITH 10 HZ ON BLOOD BIOMARKERS IN WISTAR RATS
Background: Exposure to whole body vibration exercises (WBVE), besides some biological effects, causes alterations
in the concentration of some blood biomarkers. The aim of this study is to evaluate the action of vibration (10 Hz) of
WBVE on the concentration of blood biomarkers in Wistar rats.
Materials and Methods: Wistar rats were divided in 2 groups. The experimental group (EG) was subjected to
vibrations of 10Hz (one min per day, one week, total time of seven min), while the control group (CG) has not
experienced vibration. Samples of whole blood were drawn for biochemical analysis of the concentration of total
cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL, LDL, VLDL, glucose, CPK, albumin, alkaline phosphates, TGP, TGO, γGT, lipase,
amylase, urea and creatinine.
Results: White blood cell count and a platelet-hemogram were also performed. Significant (
RELEVANCE OF WHOLE BODY VIBRATION EXERCISE IN SPORT: A SHORT REVIEW WITH SOCCER, DIVER AND COMBAT SPORT
Background: Whole body vibration exercise (WBVE) has been used as a safe and accessible exercise and important
reviews have been published about the use of this exercise to manage diseases and to improve physical conditions of
athletes The aim of this paper is to highlight the relevance of WBVE to soccer players, divers and combat athletes.
Material and methods: This study was made through a systematic review of publications involving WBVE and the
selected sports in two databases (Pubmed and PEDRo).
Results: It were identified 10 studies involving WBVE and sports (6 of soccer, 2 of diving and 2 of sport combat) with
156 subjects (80 soccer players, 32 divers and 44 combat athletes), with age from 17 to 44 years old.
Conclusion: The use of WBVE has proven to be a safe and useful strategy to improve the physical conditions of
players of different sports. These findings may have clinical relevance and should be considered as a strategy to be used
to try improve the physical conditions of players
NEUROPROTECTIVE EFFECT CORILAGIN IN SPINAL CORD INJURY RAT MODEL BY INHIBITING NUCLEAR FACTOR-KB, INFLAMMATION AND APOPTOSIS
Background: Neurological functions get altered in a patient suffering from spinal cord injury (SCI). Present study
evaluates the neuroprotective effect of corilagin in spinal cord injury rats by inhibiting nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB),
inflammatory mediators and apoptosis.
Materials and method: Spinal cord injury was produced by mechanical injury to spinal cord. All the rats were treated with
corilagin (10 & 15 mg/kg, ip) for the duration of 4 week. Neurological functions were evaluated in all the rats by
Basso,Beattie and Brenahan scale (BBB scale). Moreover, at the end of treatment rats were sacrificed and expression of
NF-κB, concentration of cytokines like Tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα) & interlukin-6 (IL6) and oxidative stress
parameters like Malondialdehyde (MDA) and toal antioxidant capacity (TAC) in spinal tissue of spinal cord injured rats.
Immunohistological study was also performed to assess the apoptosis of neuronal cell.

SIMULTANEOUS DETERMINATION AND ANTI-INFLAMMATORY EFFECTS OF TRADITIONAL HERBAL MEDICINE, MAHWANG-TANG
Background: Mahwang-tang (MT) is a traditional Korean medicine consisting of six medicinal herbs and is used to
treat the influenza-like diseases.
Materials and Methods: We performed the simultaneous analysis of nine bioactive components in an MT sample
using a high-performance liquid chromatography–diode array detector (HPLC–DAD) analysis. In addition, the MT
sample was investigated the inhibitory effects against lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells.
Results: Recovery of the nine marker compounds was 98.24–102.05% and relative standard deviations of intra-day and
inter-day precisions of this method were 0.05–1.92% and 0.02–1.64%, respectively. Amounts of the nine bioactive
compounds in the MT samples were 0.24–24.86 mg/g. To determine the biological activity of MT, its effects on the
inflammatory reaction in LPS-treated RAW 264.7 macrophages were tested. The results suggest that MT possesses
anti-inflammatory activity via suppression of the nitric oxide/prostaglandin E2 pathway.
Conclusion: The established analytical method by HPLC–DAD is expected to help the quality control of MT samples
or related herbal prescriptions. Our data also suggest that MT may be a potential therapeutic candidate for various
inflammatory diseases
PROTECTIVE EFFECTS OF CISTANCHES HERBA AQUEOUS EXTRACT ON CISPLATIN-INDUCED PREMATURE OVARIAN FAILURE IN MICE
Background: Chemotherapeutic treatment of premenopausal women has been linked to premature ovarian failure (POF). Cistanches Herba (CH) is a commonly used male impotence and female infertility treatment in China; however, whether CH protects ovaries from chemotherapeutic drug-induced POF remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the protective effects of CH in a mouse model of chemotherapeutic drug-induced POF.
Materials and Methods: We administered low- and high-concentration CH to cisplatin-induced POF mice for 2 weeks and determined body and ovarian weights, as well as serum follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and estradiol concentrations, to evaluate ovarian function. In addition, we evaluated the protective mechanisms of CH by detecting the levels of apoptosis-related proteins and evaluating markers of mitochondrial function.
Results: In POF mice, we observed reduced body and ovarian weights; elevated serum FSH and attenuated estradiol concentrations; apoptosis of ovarian granulosa with concomitant changes in apoptosis-related proteins (including caspase-3, poly adenosine diphosphate-ribose polymerase, Bcl-2, and Bax); and mitochondrial dysfunction, such as a reduction in mitochondrial numbers, destruction of ultrastructural morphology, decrease in ATPase activity, and decreases in mitochondrial membrane potential and mitofusin-2 (a mitochondria dynamin-like GTPase). Significantly, CH reversed, to an extent, functional and morphologic injuries and ovarian tissue apoptosis by up-regulating the level of Mfn2 and the ratio of Bcl-2/Bax. Furthermore, CH reduced cisplatin-induced mitochondrial dysfunction in ovarian tissues.
Conclusion: The present findings showed that CH inhibited cisplatin-induced POF through interactions between Mfn2 and Bcl-2/Bax proteins and, possibly, by up-regulation of Mfn2 expression. Ultimately, CH protects ovarian tissues from cisplatin-induced apoptosis
ETHNOBOTANICAL SURVEY OF MEDICINAL PLANTS USED IN THE MANAGEMENT OF HYPERTENSION IN THE MARITIME REGION OF TOGO
Background: Hypertension is one of the most common chronic diseases in modern societies and there is evidence that its incidence and severity are increasing. This survey was conducted to investigate the plants used by the Togolese traditional healers to treat the disease.
Method: From January to June 2016, an ethnobotanical survey was conducted using a semi-structured questionnaire with traditional healers (TH) in the southern region of Togo. The importance of the plants was assessed by the calculation of the use value (UV).
Results: In Total, 128 TH male and female were interviewed and 116 plants species belonging to 46 families were identified as treating hypertension. The most represented families were: Fabaceae with 16 species followed by Euphorbiaceae and Rutaceae contributing with 8 and 6 species respectively. Based on the calculated use values the most important species were Byrsocarpus coccineus Schum. Et thonn. (UV = 0.47); Crateva religiosa G.Forst. (UV = 0.47), Boerhavia diffusa Engelm. &A.Gray L. (UV = 0.47), Xylopia aethiopica A. Rich. (UV = 0.42), Mangnifera indica L. (UV = 0.38). The leaves and the roots were the parts of plant predominantly used to prepare the recipes, mainly decoctions administrated by oral route. Clinical manifestations such as dizzy spells, swarming, loss of consciousness, severe headache, severe anxiety and shortness of breath, nosebleed, and fear of heights were used by TH to diagnose the disease.
Conclusion: This study showed initial evidence of the use of plant materials by Togolese TH to treat hypertension. These results constitute a database for pharmacological screenings with the aim of developing new therapies
LEAF MORPHOLOGY AND ANATOMY OF VARIETIES OF TURNERA DIFFUSA VAR. DIFFUSA AND TURNERA DIFFUSA VAR. APHRODISIACA (WARD) URB
Background: Mexican damiana (Turnera diffusa Willd. Ex. Schult), specifically damiana of California has a high demand in the international market for its popularity as aphrodisiac, but its marketing has been affected by the adulteration of its products due to a lack of authentication mechanisms and limited information on the differences between the two currently known varieties. The aim of this study was to establish a leaf standard monograph with scientific bases of the varieties aphrodisiaca and diffusa of Turnera diffusa Willd. Ex. Schult, cultivated at the same agronomic and environmental conditions.
Material and Methods: Damiana leaves were collected from a cultivar located in the municipality of Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico in 2016. The pharmacognostic studies were carried out in terms of macroscopic and both optical and electronic microscopic characteristics of leaves of the two varieties for their distinction.
Results: The leaves of diffusa variety were twice as large as those of the aphrodisiaca variety, whereas papillose glandular trichomes were observed with greater density in the aphrodisiaca variety than those on diffusa leaves where unicellular trichomes were the ones observed in greater density. The leaves of both varieties are dorsiventral and hypostomatic with paracytic stomata.
Conclusion: The obtained qualitative and quantitative leaf standards provide reference information for the proper identification and monograph preparation of the aphrodisiaca and diffusa varieties of Turnera diffusa. Pharmacognostic characteristics such as the type of stomata, trichomes, and leaf identify the species, whereas characteristics as leaf size and trichome density differ between varieties
