Profitability of the Production of Sotol (Dasylirion spp.) Seedlings Grown under Greenhouse Conditions
Sotol (Dasylirion spp.) is a native plant of the Chihuahuan desert, used in the production of alcoholic beverages. The Mexican Council of Sotol (CMS) and the Certification Council of Sotol (CCS) supervise the compliance with the NOM-159-SCFI-2004 official Mexican standard; these organizations also fulfil other functions. The objective of this study was to carry out an economic and financial feasibility analysis of the greenhouse production of sotol seedlings grown under seedbed conditions. The production cost data were obtained from a module established in the municipality of Meoqui, Chihuahua, Mexico. Producers registered in the CMS and in the CCS —and who are interested in establishing commercial sotol plantations— provided direct empirical information. In addition, the Net Present Value (NPV), Internal Rate of Return (IRR), and the Benefit-Cost Ratio (B/C) financial variables were determined. The results showed that the investment project is feasible, because it recorded a 1,483,396.12 NPV, a 59% IRR, and 1.55 B/C ratio. In conclusion, the results indicate a potential demand and a profitable production of sotol seedlings grown under greenhouse conditions in Chihuahua
Chemical Management of Helianthus annuus L. as a Broadleaf Weed in Interaction with the Zea mays L. Crop
Objective: To evaluate the biological effectiveness of progressive doses of the herbicide Condraz® (tritosulfuron + dicamba) in post-emergence in dicotyledonous plants grown in consortium with corn in a greenhouse.
Design/methodology/approach: The research was performed out in a greenhouse within the facilities of the Colegio Superior Agropecuario del Estado de Guerrero. Dekalb 357® corn was established, planted in a consortium with sunflower, to measure the response to different dosages of the herbicide Condraz® (tritosulfuron + dicamba). We worked with a completely randomized block experimental design (DBCA).
Results: The treatments were 100% effective, because they eliminated the sunflower plants used as a representative of dicotyledonous weeds; while, in treatment T1 (water) the number of these was not affected, which was 10 sunflower plants per pot in the two experiments.
Limitations on study/implications: Our results are specific for the management of dicotyledonous weeds in corn.
Findings/conclusions: Condraz® herbicide is effective in eliminating dicotyledonous weeds when applied in doses ranging from 100 to 190 g per ha
The effect of predictor variables on cherry coffee yield in two regions of the state of Veracruz, Mexico
Objective: The objective of this research project is to analyze the effect of the predictor variables (planted, harvested area and production) respect to the coffee yield (cherry) in two areas: Huatusco and Córdoba, Veracruz, México with information from the Agroalimentary and Fishery Information Service (SIAP).
Design/methodology/approach: The methodology is mixed-correlational, with a representative sample of 120 cases. A based reflexion in literature is done about cultivation, processing techniques, good practices, marketing and performance.
Results: The results were significant with a Pearson correlation of 0.983 of the variables: final production and harvested area. Regarding the stablished hypotheses, they were positive and proven: respect to coffee production was 2.532 and planted area was 0.639, Hipothesys were stablished with 95 percent reliability, the coffee yield was higher in the Huatusco area with 1.78.
Limitations on study/implications: There were no limitations to conduct this study.
Findings/conclusionsThis research promises a perspective of improvement for the coming years of coffee cherry cultivation, where a positive forecast was observed in yields, and for coffee producers it is expected that there will be actions aimed to improve their innovation mechanisms for higher production and life quality.
Keywords: predictor variables, yield, coffee and production process.Objective: To analyze the effect of predictor variables (sown area, harvested area, and production) on cherry coffee yield in the Huatusco and Córdoba regions of the state of Veracruz.Design/Methodology/Approach: A mixed and correlational method was employed with a representative trial sample of 144 cases. The existing bibliography on cultivation, processing techniques, good practices, commercialization, and yield was subject to a critical analysis.Results: The results were statistically significant (Pearson correlation=0.983) for the “final production” and “harvested area” variables. The hypotheses were positive, confirmed, and determined to be 95% reliable. The production was 2.532 and the sown area was 0.639. The coffee yield was higher in the Huatusco region, with a value of 1.72.Study Limitations/Implications: The study was not hindered by any limitations.Findings/Conclusions: Innovation is of great consequence for the enhancement of coffee productivity. Technified agriculture has the potential to speed up the production process. However, further research is necessary to ensure the optimal care of these crops and to guarantee superior yields of higher quality
Biostimulant Effects of Glycine Betaine in Strawberry Exposed to Salinity Stress
Objective: To evaluate the biostimulant effects of glycine betaine (GB) in strawberry plants subjected to salt stress.Design/methodology/approach: A 2 × 3 factorial experiment was carried out with a completely randomized experimental design where the effects of foliar application of GB (0, 10, 20 mM) were evaluated in strawberry plantsexposed to salt stress induced by NaCl (0 and 50 mM). Plant sampling was done 148 days after the establishment of the experiment. The biochemical and nutritional variables were measured. Analysis of variance wasperformed on the data obtained and the means were compared using the Tukey test (p ≤ 0.05).Results: GB application increased chlorophyll concentration, reduced sugar and proline concentration, and increased P uptake. The 20 mM GB dose maintained the K + /Na + ratio under salt stress.
Study limitations/implications: The reproductive phase was not considered in this study; therefore, the effects of GB on fruit yield and quality are not assessed.Findings/conclusions: Foliar application of GB in strawberry plants subjected to salinity stress is concluded to improve adaptive responses of a biochemical nature by promoting chlorophyll biosynthesis and nutrient concentration
Structure and phenology characterization of four tree species of tropical deciduous forests: Characterization, structure and phenology of tree species of the Selva Baja Caducifolia in Morelos
Objective: Determine structural and phenological characteristics of four important tree species in the Low Deciduous Forest
Design/Methodology/Approach:
To determine the structure, trees ≥ 10 cm in diameter at a height of 1.30 m were censused in 30 sites of 500 m2. For phenology, seven sites were selected. The phenological states evaluated were: rest, vegetative, flowering, fruiting and seeding.
Results: 405 individuals were found, belonging to the four species under study Copal ancho (Bursera copallifera (Sessé & Moc.) ex DC. Bullock), Palo dulce (Eysenhardtia polystachya (Ortega) Sarg.,) Tecolhuixtle (Mimosa benthamii (J.F. Macbr. var. benthamii)), Tepemezquite (Lysiloma divaricatum (Jacq.) Macbride), regarding the Relative Importance Value Index, Tepemezquite ranked first, in the phenological aspects observed, three species lost foliage at some time of the year. Only Tecolhuixtle presented it continuously.
Limitations on study/implications: The results and conclusions are limited to the sample used in the present study. Since data was only taken from individuals with DAP ≥ 10 cm, but they can be extrapolating exercising care
Findings/conclusions: The structural and phenological aspects of the four woody species, in the Ejido El Limón, confirm that they are similar to what has been described for this type of vegetation in other locations in Mexico.Objective: To determine the structural and phenological characteristics of four major tree species in the tropical deciduous forests.
Design/Methodology/Approach: To determine their structure, ≥ 10 cm wide trees were registered at a height of 1.30 m in 30 sites of 500 m2. For phenological purposes, seven sites were selected. The following phenological stages were evaluated: dormancy, vegetative, flowering, fruiting, and seeding.
Results: Four hundred and five individuals belonging to the four species under study were found: copal ancho (Bursera copallifera (Sessé & Moc.) ex DC. Bullock), Mexican kidneywood (Eysenhardtia polystachya (Ortega) Sarg.), tecolhuixtle (Mimosa benthamii (J.F. Macbr. var. bentha-mii)), and tepemezquite (Lysiloma divaricatum (Jacq.) Macbride). Tepemezquite ranked first according to the Relative Importance Value Index. Based on the phenological characteristics observed, three species lost foliage at some time of the year and only tecolhuixtle was evergreen.
Study Limitations/Implications: The results and conclusions are limited only to individuals with ≥ 10 cm in diameter. Further results can be extrapolated from this data.
Findings/Conclusions: The structural and phenological features of the four species evaluated in ejido El Limón have similar characteristics to those that have been described for this type of vegetation in other locations in Mexico
Sexual propagation of Abies religiosa (Kunth) Cham, by immersion in water at different temperatures and periods
Objective: To increase the percentage of germination in Abies religiosa by immersion in water at different temperatures and times that the seeds will be soaked.
Design/methodology/approach: A completely randomized factorial experiment was carried oud with five temperatures (10, Ta, 30, 40 and 50 °C) and 13 times expressed in seconds (10, 20, 40, 60, 600, 1200, 1800, 2400, 3000, 3600, 7200, 14400 and 2160) with a total of 65 treatments and 30 replications of each treatment. The seed were immersed in water at different temperatures and times corresponded to each treatment in order to obtain the best treatment that generated the highest percentage.
Results: The best pre-germinative treatment that generated the highest germination percentage was the combination of temperature of 40 °C and a time of 7200s, obtaining 73% germination, and 14% germination as the lowest percentage in the combinations (10 °C x 20s and 10 °C x 40s), generating 26 treatments with percentages higher than 50% germination, registering a peak value of 8.56 and 11.7 days to reach the peak value.
Limitations on study/implications: In the experiment, it was important to maintain the different temperatures constant, being those of longer time, lower temperature and higher temperature the most difficult to control and maintain
Findings/conclusions: Abies religiosa is able to tolerate and generate acceptable germination percentages with the highest temperature used (50 °C), being one of the best temperatures, which was supposed to generate low germination percentages.

The seeds were dipped in water with the temperatures and periods of each treatment to obtain the highest germination percentage.Results: The best pre-germination treatment (73% germination) was obtained with the combination of 40 °C and 7,200 s. Meanwhile, the treatments with the lowest percentage (14%) were the combinations 10 °C × 20 s and 10 °C × 40 s. Twenty-six treatments recorded a >50% germination, reaching a peak value of 8.56 at 11.7days.
Study Limitations/Implications: Keeping the water temperature and theimmersion period constant during the experiment was more difficult in the longer treatments, with the lowest and highest temperatures.Findings/Conclusions: Abies religiosa registers acceptable germination percentages with the highest temperature (50 °C)
The agricultural policy of Mexico in the american context (1995-2020)
Objective: To analyze the long-term relationship of two groups of agricultural policy instruments -Producer Support Estimate (PSE) and General Services Support Estimate (GSSE)- OECD classification of agricultural Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in Mexico, USA, Canada, Chile and Brazil during the period 1995-2020, to generate information that contributes to the design of agricultural policies.
Design/Methodology/Approach: The information used was from the OECD and was integrated into a time series for the period 1995-2020. A quantitative analysis based on the econometric method was performed, applying the cointegration test.
Results: The series of Canada, Brazil and Mexico are cointegrated, because the model error has a unit root, that is, the variables are not of order I(0), at the individual level, but the combination of the variables, shows that the error is an I(0) process with half zero. However, the variables for Chile and the US do not show cointegration.
Limitations/implications of the study: In an open economy environment, the design and implementation of policies that include the use of various groups of instruments is required, considering their relevance so that the resources transferred to the sector generate the expected results.
Findings/Conclusions: The GSSE, compared to the PSE, maintains a closer long-term relationship with agricultural GDP growth in most countries, so it is assumed that using this group of instruments to transfer resources to the sector will improve their performance to a greater extent.

Response of sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) to organic fertilizer in northern Belize
Among the most productive activities in northern Belize is sugar cane; as a result, it is a livelihood and income base for many Belizeans who depend on it. However, the low productivity has been an important factor since it has limited the production yield due to high costs of inputs such as synthetic chemical fertilizers, pesticides, among others. Also, due to its intensive application, it has caused a problem in sustainability between the soil, crops and the environment. The objective of this study was to evaluate the response of sugarcane to organic fertilization in northern Belize. The work consisted of a completely randomized experimental design of 10 treatments, made up of the control (without fertilization), synthetic chemical fertilization, bokashi, bovine biol, and their combinations. The variables evaluated were: Diameter, longitude, and stem weight, maturity index, number of dry leaves, weight of dry leaves, green tops, plant weight and plant longitude. The treatment that obtained the best result was treatment ten (T10, 3 t edaphic bokashi + 2 % foliar biol). It also obtained the highest yield of tons per hectare (t ha-1) with 330; likewise, higher maturity index with 89.9 %.Objective: To provide an ecological alternative for sugarcane producers in northern Belize evaluating the response of the crop to organic fertilizer (bovine biol and bokashi).
Design/Methodology/Approach: Ten treatments with different doses and combinations of bokashi and bovine manure-based biol were applied in a crop of the sugarcane variety B79-474 in the northern region of Belize.
Results: The combination of 3 t ha-1 of bokashi applied to the soil and 2% biol applied to the leaves recorded the best sugarcane yields, with an average weight of 2.0 kg per processable stalk.
Study Limitations/Implications: Bokashi production involves the use of large amounts of manure, which are difficult to transport and handle with simple tools.
Findings/Conclusions: The sugarcane variety B79-474 had a positive response to organic fertilizer (average yield: 2.0 kg per stalk and 330 t ha-1 of cane), applying 3 t ha-1 of bokashi to the soil and 2 % biol to the leaves
Methods for the control of whitefly (Aleyrodidae) in citrus: a systematic review
Objective: The work consisted of carrying out a systematic review of the methods used to control whitefly in citrus crops, the species of whitefly present and the organisms used for biological control, based on original articles published in the period 1950 to 2021. Design/methodology/approach: The study was carried out in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses. The literature was obtained from electronic databases. Mendeley was used as a bibliographic manager and a database was created from which the information analysis was carried out. Results: Two groups were identified as control methods: 1) chemical control and 2) biological control, the latter being the most used. Parasitoids were the most used as biological control, particularly several genera of the Aphelinidae family. Aleurothrixus floccosus was the most frequent in citrus orchards. Limitations on study/implications: Information is limited and scattered and there are no data on the efficacy of the methods. Findings/conclusions: The use of antagonistic organisms used as a method of biological control is of great relevance due to the effect they have on pests since they contribute to naturally regulating the population levels of insects that are harmful to citrus crops.Objective: To carry out a systematic review of original articles published from 1950 to 2021 about the methods used to control whitefly on citrus crops and the biological control organisms.
Design/Methodology/Approach: The study was carried out following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses. The reference works were retrieved from electronic databases. The Mendeley Bibliography Manager was used to create a new data base which, in its turn, was used to analyze the information.
Results: Two groups were identified as control methods: 1) chemical control, and 2) biological control. The latter was used with greater frequency than the former. Several genera of the family Aphelinidae were the parasitoids most frequently used for biological control. Aleurothrixus floccosus was the most frequent pest in citrus orchards.
Study Limitations/Implications: The information is limited and scattered. There is no information about the efficiency of the methods.
Findings/Conclusions: The use of antagonistic organisms used as a biological control method is of utmost importance, given the impact those organisms have on pests. They make a contribution to the natural regulation of the population levels of harmful insects in citrus crops
Phenols as an alternative, neuroprotective, and preventive strategy for Alzheimer's disease: (mini-review and bibliometric analysis)
Objective: This study aimed to perform a bibliometric review focused on secondary metabolites of phenolic origin in the context of Alzheimer's disease. Analyzing the research trend in this field during the last two decades, highlighting the chemical-computational (in silico) perspective Design/methodology/approach: Publications from the last two decades (2001-2023) were examined using the academic search engine Dimensions. The focus of our analysis was on identifying co-occurrence networks of terms present in the titles and abstracts of these publications, setting a minimum threshold of 100 co-occurrences for inclusion in the study (VOSviewer v. 1.6.19,2023). Results: The literature consulted suggests phenolic compounds as metabolites with preventive capacity, derived from their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective properties. Limitations on study/implications: However, it is essential to highlight the limitations observed in each area so that an integral vision is encouraged in future research. Findings/conclusions: The integration of epidemiological studies, in vitro investigations, in silico análisis, and in vivo experiments will advance the development of therapeutic strategies based on phenolic compounds for the care of multifactorial Alzheimer's disease.
