    Analysing Determinants of Household Broiler Chicken Meat Purchases amidst Social-Media Misinformation: A Tobit Study

    The Indian poultry sector significantly boosts GDP. It is grown at 8-10% annually, reaching 22.97billionin2022,expectedtohit22.97 billion in 2022, expected to hit 41.94 billion (10.18% CAGR) from 2023 to 2028. Social media misinformation adversely affected the broiler sector, lowering prices and consumption. Using the Tobit Model, this study analysed Indian households' broiler chicken purchases during misinformation. Data on demographics, socioeconomics, and monthly consumption of chicken meat was collected from 503 respondents and analysed. On average, men favoured broiler chicken, while women preferred native chicken. The potential impact of social media misinformation on women's choices and the influence on households with senior citizens, which consumed significantly less quantity compared to their counterparts, remained intriguing. Unexpectedly, households with better incomes and more education purchased less broiler meat. Marital status, place of residence, cohabitation, and presence of children did not significantly affect the outcome. Muslim families purchased more broiler chicken meat, and larger households consumed more. Consumption frequency was important, with daily and alternate-day customers making larger purchases. Purchases of broiler meat were negatively impacted by the consumption of country chicken. Amidst social media misinformation, while a slight adverse impact on household broiler consumption may have occurred, it's notable that a significant portion of households (97.20%) continued to purchase broiler chicken meat, exhibiting the potential effectiveness of media-driven interventions in mitigating the impact of misinformation and reiterated the persistent favourability for broiler chicken as a dietary protein choice within the larger consumer demographic.     Dry matter distribution of banderita grass [Bouteloua curtipendula (Michx.) Torr.] at different plant strata

    Objective: To evaluate the dry matter distribution of banderita grass [Bouteloua curtipendula (Michx.) Torr.] in different plant strata. Design/Methodology/Approach: A randomized block experimental design with five repetitions was used for the experiment. Each repetition consisted of three plants which were evaluated at different days after sowing (DAS), in three different plant strata: basal stratum (BS), middle stratum (MS), and upper or apical stratum (AS). The following variables were evaluated: dry matter yield (DMY), morphological composition (MC), leaf area (LA), plant height (PH), leaf:stem ratio (L:SR), and aerial part:root ratio (Ap:rR). An analysis of variance was performed, using the PROC GLM procedure of the SAS software; in addition, a comparison of means was carried out using Tukey’s test (α<0.05). Results: SB made a greater contribution to DMY at 50 DAS, with a 16 g DMY plant-1 average, followed by MS, with 9 g DM plant-1, and AS with 3 g plant-1. The MC (g) in the BS registered that the stem made a greater contribution than the rest of the components (average: 12.3 g plant-1), while leaves from the MS and AS made the greatest contribution (2.6 g plant-1) up to 64 DAS. However, they were surpassed by the stem in the MS and by the inflorescence in the AS. In addition, BS registered the highest LA (173.4 cm2). The largest PH was recorded at 120 DAS (96 cm). The highest L:SR ratio reached 1.10 at 50 DAS, while Ap:rR recorded 3.82 at 92 DAS. Study Limitations/Implications: The experiment was carried out under greenhouse conditions. Therefore, any extrapolation or comparison with field conditions should be done with caution. Findings/Conclusions: The basal and middle part of a banderita grass (Bouteloua curtipendula) plant contains the highest forage accumulation (mainly in the leaves and the stem), while the highest biomass content in the apical part is produced by the inflorescence

    Challenges and Opportunities in the Specialization of Maize Cultivation

    Objective: To identify current scientific information on maize (Zea mays L.) in relation to the challenges and opportunities associated with the specialization of this crop. Design/methodology/approach: A bibliographic search was conducted in high-impact journals focusing on the difficulties and opportunities in maize cultivation. Results: Several key challenges in maize cultivation were identified, including the impact of climate change, limited access to technologies for small and medium producers, variability in grain price, and the availability of improved seed to increase yields in their reproductive zones. One potential solution involves access to improved short-cycle varieties with tolerance to adverse factors (both biotic and abiotic), combined with sustainable agricultural techniques such as conservation agriculture. Limitations on study/implications: Despite existing research on maize cultivation, its composition, nutritional contribution and economic importance, the profitability of this crop is affected by factors such as price variation, climate change, and the incidence of pests and diseases. Therefore, further research is needed to identify varieties with more competitive markets to enhance sustainability. Findings/conclusions: Maize is a globally important crop with industrial applications and uses for both human and livestock consumption. The increasing demand underscores the need to improve its performance and profitability. A strategy to increase production involves promoting diversification through the specialization of varieties with more competitive markets and the adoption of sustainable agricultural techniques

    Wild Edible Mushroom Lore in A Suburban Mestizo Community: Traditional knowledge of edible wild mushrooms

    Objective: To record the traditional mycological knowledge of wild edible mushrooms (WEM) in Santa Ana Jilotzingo, a mestizo rural community with great influence from the urban area of ​​Mexico City. Design/methodology/approach: Unstructured and semi-structured interviews were conducted during 3 years. Results: Sixty-six species of WEM, 91 traditional names, 65 Spanish names, 3 nahuatlisms, 4 mixed names, and 19 indeterminate names were recorded. The local gatherers have a precise knowledge of the biology, ecology and distribution of the used species; the older people preserving more diverse and precise knowledge. Nowadays, gathering of WEM in the rainy season as an economic activity has lost relevance. However, WEM gathering as a livehood food supplement continue being important for the community. Limitations on study/implications: The field work in 2020 was complicated by the pandemic. Findings/conclusions: In the study area, relevant traditional mycological knowledge still survives despite complex adverse conditions such as acculturation, migration and deforestation.Objective: To record the mycological lore related to wild edible mushrooms (WEM) in Santa Ana Jilotzingo, a mestizo rural community greatly influenced by the urban area of Mexico City.     Trade dependence of Mexico on barley (Hordeum vulgare L.)

    Objective: Determine the degree of commercial dependence of the Mexican market with respect to barley produced abroad, in the period from 1994 to 2021. Design/methodology/approach: The growth rates of the barley production variables in the national market were estimated, the relative trade balance was calculated, and the trade dependency coefficient was determined. Results: The production variables had positive growth rates in the analysis period, the relative trade balance was -1 and the trade dependency coefficient was close to zero. Limitations/implications: Lack of correlation between the barley market and the beer industry in Mexico. Findings/conclusions: Mexico is a net importer of barley, despite having positive growth rates in production variables; however, it does not show commercial dependence on the foreign market for this grain.Objective: To determine the degree of trade dependence of the Mexican market on, imported barley from 1994 to 2021.Design/Methodology/Approach: The growth rates of the barley production variables in the domestic market were estimated, the relative trade balance was calculated, and the trade dependence was determined.Results: The production variables had growth rates in the analysis period, the relative trade balance was -1, and the trade dependence was close to 0.Study Limitations/Implications: There is no correlation between the barley market and the brewing industry in Mexico.Findings/Conclusions: Mexico is a net importer of barley despite the positive growth rates of the production variables.     Donkeys and mules have contributed to human development for thousands of years, mainly used as pack animals, helping in the development of trading and people's transportation. They are characterized by being strong, resistant, and long-lived animals. These animals can easily adapt to different environmental conditions, are disease resistant, and tolerate heavier loads than horses.Objective: To review the economic and social importance of donkeys and mules and their current situation in Mexico. Design/Methodology/Approach: Donkeys and mules have contributed to human development for thousands of years, mainly as pack animals, helping in the development of trade and the transportation of people. These strong, hardy, and long-lived animals can easily adapt to different environmental conditions, are resistant to diseases, and tolerate heavier loads than horses. Study Limitations/Implications: These animals are mainly found in developing countries, where they are used for transportation, as beasts of burden, and for agricultural work. Unfortunately, their welfare is threatened as their basic needs (e.g., feeding, health, and housing) are not met, despite their undeniable usefulness, especially in rural conditions. Findings/Conclusions: Donkeys and mules have played a major role and made an undeniable contribution to human civilizations.     Germination test of maize (Zea mays L.) seeds in a NaCl solution

    ABSTRACT Objective. To evaluate germination behavior and define initial vigor in maize seeds. Methodology. The genetic material used were four batches of 20 hybrid seeds (M-2014, SR-2014, SR-2012 and SR-2011) of each one, which were germinated in a NaCl solution (0, 5, 10, and 15 dS m-1) in a germination chamber. A Randomized Complete Block experimental design was used, where the experimental unit was the seed lot and salinity level; with four replicates each. Once seeds with defined radicle and plumule were observed, they were counted for evaluation. Results. When comparing the three lots from the same environment (production site) and different year, the statistical analysis indicated that longer seeds had lower germination percentages. Similarly, when comparing the lots from different production environments and the same year, M-2014 obtained the highest average germination percentage (92.19%). When evaluating the maximum salinity level, 15 dS m-1, a loss in the average germination percentage of 41.25% was observed. Conclusions. The test was acceptable to evaluate the viability and vigor of a seed lot, because it was efficient in discriminating seed lots in relation to speed and uniformity in germination based on the NaCl solution.     Objective: To assess new flowering inducers used to increase the fruit yield in mango cv. Ataulfo trees, to substitute paclobutrazol. Design/methodology/approach: Ten-year-old mango cv. Ataulfo trees were used, homogeneous in terms of health. The treatments evaluated were prohexadione calcium, cytokinins, itaconic acid, phosphonitrate, potassium nitrate and paclobutrazol. The experimental design was completely random blocks with five repetitions; each experimental unit and repetition consisted of one tree. The number of inflorescences, percentage of flowering, number of fruits, fruit yield by hectare, and profitability of treatments were assessed. The data were analyzed through ANOVA and Tukey’s means comparison (p<0.05). Results: There were no significant effects of the treatments for number of inflorescences, percentage of flowering, and number of fruits; however, the homogeneous formation of inflorescences was found with itaconic acid. Prohexadione calcium (P-Ca) presented the highest fruit yield (19.32 t ha-1), but it does not differ from paclobutrazol (10.34 t ha-1). The highest profitability of the crop was obtained with prohexadione calcium, in which for each peso invested the amount of $1.51 was recovered. Findings/conclusions: Prohexadione calcium can be an alternative for the use of paclobutrazol to induce flowering and increase the fruit yield of mango cv. Ataulfo in the Coast of Guerrero

    Objective: To determine the acceptability of maize stubble treated with urea-molasses (MaUM), silage effluent  with phosphoric acid (MaEflAcP) and the control (MaTes); in bean, stubble trated with silage effluent (FrEfl), effluent silage with urea-molasses (FrEflUM) and the control (FrTes); in broad bean, stubble treated with silage effluent with urea-molasses (HaEflUM), urea-molasses with phosphoric acid (HaUMAcP) and the control (HaTes). Design/Methodology/Approach: A feeding preference test was conducted with six Dorper/Katahdin lambs weighing 21 kg. In the morning they were fed with a mixture of the three treatments of each stubble (70% of the dry matter (DM) requirement/40 min); later, each treatment was offered in independent feeders (10% of the DM requirement/20 min)/7 d. Intake was measured in g (offer minus rejection). Data was analyzed with the ordinal logistic regression model after classifying the ordinal qualitative variables of consumption frequency 1=low, 2=medium and 3=high as variables, the results were expressed as the estimated proportion of incidence of frequency 1, 2 or 3. Results: The estimated proportion of high consumption frequency was higher for MaUM, HaUMAcP and FrEflUM with 95.24, 73.44 and 43.49%, respectively. The estimated proportion of low consumption frequency was observed in HaTes, MaTes and FrTes 95.12, 88.11 and 48.77% respectively. Study limitations/Implications: The diets with different quality and flavor did not allow to meet the assumptions of normality and homocedasticity, however, the results provide valuable information to improve dry matter intake and animal production.     Methane in Dairy Farms in Aguascalientes: Corn Silage

    Objective: To evaluate the potential methane gas production from corn silages (CS) intended for Holstein cattle in dairy farms in the state of Aguascalientes (Ags), Mexico. Design/Methodology/Approach: Methane (CH4) is one of the greenhouse gases, and worldwide plans and actions are being developed to monitor, control, and reduce their environmental impact. In Mexico, methane emissions from livestock are equivalent to 10.1% of CO2 equivalent are recorded. CS samples were collected from six municipalities in Ags, representing a total of 18 dairy farms. The in vitro gas production technique was used to determine methane gas production, employing a nested mixed model to compare variables between municipalities using residual maximum likelihood method. Results: The average methane production in CS was 29.3 mL/gDM. The Ags municipality showed significantly higher methane production (35.9 mL/gDM, p<0.05), while San Francisco de los Romo (SFR) displayed the lowest production (21.5 mL/gDM, p<0.05). In the state of Aguascalientes, CS-derived CH4 production was projected at approximately 2,884 metric tons (MT) annually. Study Limitations/Implications: There were no identified limitations in the study. Findings/Conclusions: The potential CH4 gas production derived from CS projected in the study represented 0.103% of what was reported by INEGyCEI in 2019
