Introducing the students’ participation, upgrading the curriculum: The case of the course Sustainable City, University of Belgrade - Faculty of Architecture

This paper describes the process applied in the course named Sustainable City (University of Belgrade - Faculty of Architecture, 1st year of master studies) which directly influences its design and further upgrading. By introducing the students’ participation, the curriculum supports their research work which is divided into two phases: reflexive and creative. The first, reflexive phase is focused on the problem analysis targeting the sustainable urban transformation processes. Through the examples selected by students a number of specific urban problems related to different aspects of sustainability are identified and described, as a practical contribution. The second, creative phase introduces the students’ proposals and recommendations for improving the urban environment, tested through a development of a small pilot project (representing the final outcome - exam). Through these two phases students verify their ability for preparing proposals for various research projects and grants, aiming at the desirable transformations of cities via affordable solutions. The design of the course curriculum also enables students to understand the genesis and an impact of sustainable processes on urban development, creating the basis for the knowledge application in both urban planning and design. Simultaneously, this participative approach influences the elaboration of an iterative process in which students provide inputs, i.e. the desirable research topics for curriculum improvement, later included into an updated and upgraded version of the course, implemented in the following school year. The results suggest that through an inclusive learning process, a culture of proactively envisioning a sustainable alternative future is emerging. Most importantly, student participants show their commitment as the agents of potential change to create alternative environmental values and sustainable behavior

Digital Technologies for Urban Regeneration: A Case Study of the Former Bileća Street in Trebinje, Bosnia and Herzegovina

The Digital or Fourth Industrial Revolution, which began in the 1980s, is the event that has contributed the most substantially to possibilities for global information dissemination. The explosion of digital technologies over the last twenty years has brought change to the conventional workflow. Institutions dealing with cultural heritage have recognised the opportunities afforded by digital technologies for the preservation of tangible and intangible heritage, especially the great potential they have shown for improving public access to different forms of cultural heritage and its reuse.1Over the last two decades, there has been a debate among experts about the benefits and drawbacks of using digital technologies for the purpose of preservation of cultural heritage, as well as the relationship between the material and virtual worlds. Digitisation has caused many controversies and dilemmas as to whether digital technologies can recapture the past outside what was previously the human sociocultural context. Heritage is revitalised not solely for its spatial presentation, but also for the experience and magic of feeling that one is in the past. This is a creative approach that allows one to experience history using all senses and is a way to present heritage that really appeals to people. The upside of digital technology is that it allows the protection, conservation and promotion of tangible and intangible heritage. Ideas and initiatives such as virtual museums, libraries and galleries are readily embraced when a site or an institution cannot be accessed physically, and they were actively implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is often reiterated that the ultimate goal of using digital technology is to understand the past and to appreciate the achievements of ancestors. 2 The European Commission launched Europeana, a platform that provides access to cultural heritage through digital technology and is freely publicly accessible. 3 The use of digital technology is a two-way process in that it has influenced our understanding of heritage on the one hand, while on the other, cultural heritage has also influenced how digital tools can be used

Urban and Architectural Contract: Shared Interest Small Scale Architectural Project within the Study of the Design Variability and Generative Principles in Architectural Design

    Get PDF
Several stakeholders expressed their interest in the design of a small multiuse building through a mutual agreement defined to improve the value of their urban neighbourhood and individual assets and find a solution to an abandoned and decaying estate. In line with tight urban and architectural regulations, alongside the owners’ requirements, which have all immediately restricted any inappropriately excessive design response, the architectural proposal offered new living and working conditions by favouring beauty and elegance that arise from simplicity. With the form highly constrained along the edges by the external conditions, the architectural research has been oriented towards the internal morphing, variability, and optimisation, thereby problematising the contested approaches of analogue (human) and digital automated (machine) generative architectural design, anticipating their hybrid form as the next subject to be investigated.Design Variability and Generative Principles in Architectural Design : https://dciricgenpdecmakeanaloguevidpage.tumblr.com/ : Related Work - Chapter: https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.11062819. Idejno rešenje nove zgrade Fakulteta muzičke umetnosti u Beogradu [druga nagrada]

    No full text

SAJ : Serbian architectural journal [Architectural identities: Japan] [Part 1]

    No full text
The thematic issue of the Serbian Architectural Journal titled Architectural Identities: Japan was conceived in an effort to cast a wide net and provide a veritable smorgasbord of research ideas. These in turn serve as a snapshot (Czarniawska, 2002) of contemporary thoughts on all things interconnecting Japan, identity and architecture. Snapshots of any kind, and especially presented here, are particularly informative, essentially viewed as layers, stacked over time and contextualized, with one common thread throughout. This particular thread, the one that cannot be untangled and does not point out of the labyrinth, is the most precious aspect that unifies all the presented contributions. And the beauty is – you choose which one to pull

Formation of renovation models for reinforced concrete facades on the example of multifamily buildings of New Belgrade

The main goal of the research in dissertation is the process of establishing renovation models for reinforced concrete facades based on their valorization. As part of the valorization process, multifamily buildings that were built in the period from 1958 to 1980 from the area of blocks 1 and 2 and the central zone of New Belgrade were processed. A common feature of buildings is that they contain reinforced concrete facades as the dominant factors of their materialization and represent significant examples of domestic architecture that are treated as architectural heritage, which was a prerequisite in the process of selecting adequate examples of architectural designs. The analysis of the structure of the facade assemblies of selected buildings and other relevant facts related to them, as well as modern approaches to the renovation of buildings, established certain factors in the form of criteria and limitations. The given factors, together with the defined goals of the renovation in the form of: renovation, energy rehabilitation and preservation of the original appearance of the facades, served to form various models of renovation. According to their character, the models represent ways of renovation in the domain of partial and comprehensive renovations of non-transparent and transparent zones of reinforced concrete facade assemblies. The formed models of renovation and the effects of their application were analyzed on the examples of selected buildings in the form of case studies. The basic conclusion after the case studies shows that the efficiency of the renovation models may depend on: the shape of the building and facade elements, construction of facade elements, applied materials, as well as the status of the building in case the building is a cultural property. Based on all relevant data in dissertation, form of a questionnaire is formed so that can be used in the process of selecting an adequate model for the renovation of reinforced concrete facades of multifamily buildings in real situations
