Planning urban shrinkage along the danube – a paradox or a new normality?

    Get PDF
COULD MACRO-LEVEL URBAN PLANNING be an effective solution to the issue of the shrinkage of many low-income cities in post-socialist countries in the eastern half of Europe? Although urban shrinkage is a rather complicated and often irreversible process, different global and local planning strategies are developed to overcome its consequences (Neill & Schlappa, 2016), which is often the subject of a “top-down” political regulation. These intentions have opened new perspective for traditional urban planning, embracing different novelties

    New Poles of Reurbanisation

    Get PDF
Most of the urban studies define reurbanisation as a distinctive qualitative change in local population structures, particularly in the inner neighbourhoods of cities (Haase et al, 2003), urban renewal (Bernt, 2009) or middle-class housing change and gentrification (Bridge, 2006). In the post-socialist countries, reurbanisation is very much expressed as a suburbanisation (Ouředníček & Šimon, 2015), while the process of deconcentration and decentralisation is clearly generated by the political, economic and societal changes occurred after 1990 (Stan, 2015).Након прибављених Мишљења о наведеној монографији/тематском зборнику чланови МНО за саобраћај, урбанизам и грађевинарство су их, на седници одржаној 31.01.2024. године разматрали и сачинили предлог да монографија/тематски зборник “D+ Atlas: Atlas of Hidden Urban Values along the Danube” аутори проф.

SAJ : Serbian architectural journal [Architectural identities: Japan] [Part 2]

The thematic issue of the Serbian Architectural Journal titled Architectural Identities: Japan was conceived in an effort to cast a wide net and provide a veritable smorgasbord of research ideas. These in turn serve as a snapshot (Czarniawska, 2002) of contemporary thoughts on all things interconnecting Japan, identity and architecture. Snapshots of any kind, and especially presented here, are particularly informative, essentially viewed as layers, stacked over time and contextualized, with one common thread throughout. This particular thread, the one that cannot be untangled and does not point out of the labyrinth, is the most precious aspect that unifies all the presented contributions. And the beauty is – you choose which one to pull

Thinking about how we are in the world and at the same time how we behold, experience and shape our world is of all times. The relationship, or lack of it, between the Mind and the Body is a recurring theme in this, strongly influenced in the Western world by the Frenchman René Descartes (1596-1650). Known for his statement Cogito, Ergo Sum -I think, therefore I am- he pushed for a separation of Mind and Body. Although this separation has, of course, been debated, modified and doubted, it is nevertheless taken for granted by many that the body is nothing but the material bearer of the dominant mind..

Urbomorphological structure of remembrance in Student square, Belgrade

In the context of modern city development, a significant aspect in urban planning consists of elements of the identity of the place. The historical cores of European cities, such as Belgrade, have a large number of overlapping layers of heritage in public spaces, which cannot always be physically marked due to lack of physical space, or due to the high diversity of required spatial information for an understanding of the entirety of the site. In the urban design of such densely built heterogeneous environments, it is necessary to identify and define the factors of identity, local culture and places of remembrance, to use as guidelines for the planning of sustainable public spaces, related to the local context. Elements of the city's identity, in this case, include historical and architectural heritage and urban memory, as well as traditional and cultural patterns specific to individual communities. The paper aims to identify spatial patterns and ways of interaction with heritage sites and urban memory in Belgrade, on the territory of Student Square, one of the oldest parts of Belgrade, with the highest variety of overlapped layers. The palimpsest method analysis along with the analysis of interaction and morphology of existing monuments and memorials provides new insight to identifying and designing the unmarked "invisible" heritage sites, which cannot be marked with physical landmarks and the specific identity elements that can’t be perceived within the urban tissue today. These "invisible" places whose traces exist in urban tissue need to be presented in public spaces, in a way that does not burden physical space, i.e. enable the multi-level interaction of the visible and invisible urban memory with the user of space through digital media.[https://aesopyaturkey2022.wordpress.com/abstract-book

In researching the analytical processes that precede urban design and urban planning, a significant segment of the knowledge base in the field of urban studies is the knowledge of the historical development of the wider site, especially when it comes to historical urban cores. The palimpsest method enables simultaneous analysis and research of all segments of urbomorphological and functional development of sites, which can be selected as fragments of urban memory in further urban planning or design, and should thus be specifically emphasized through the modern treatment of urban space. The work will examine the possibilities and variety of knowledge bases offered in urban studies by the application of the palimpsest method. The research polygon is the inner core of Belgrade. It is possible to overlap more layers from antiquity until the present-day city, making it possible to conduct different context analyses required for digital heritage presentation. The results of the study include the categorization of data that can be obtained by layering the palimpsest, according to morphological, cultural and functional aspects

    Philosophy of Architectural Figures

    Get PDF
Following Lyotard’s deconstruction of the opposition between the discursive and the figural, the construction “philosophy of architectural figures” would include the intention to depart from the problem of order between the two. If, instead of the question what is discursive in the figural or what is figural of the discursive, the question of the “whole” is asked, then the meaning of the position “between” the discourse and the figure – the discursive content and the figural materiality – would be found in what resists (discursive and/or figural) representation. Architecturally speaking, we can always talk about the conceptual materiality or the projected immateriality of architectural figures. The figure tends to elude discourse or mere representation through the philosophy of concepts. But it also insists on the simultaneous presence of the textual. The play between the materiality of language (which cannot be reduced to the phenomenological) and the certain phenomenology of the figure (which cannot be fully translated into linguistic concepts) is close to “desire” itself. More precisely, it becomes the most extreme form of desire. The idea to speak simultaneously about the absence of the figurative in figuration and the textual presence by the “body of words” – through a series of short sequences, that is, figures – is close to Lyotard’s comma between the discourse and figure. By dividing or linking the two words, this comma introduces an element of “incommensurability” that seeks to insinuate the radicality that allowed the term “figure” to enter the discourse. On the other hand, placing a comma begins the deconstruction of the word figure. This is why we construct sequences with “commas” that do not aim to explain anything but to inspire philosophers to see architectural figures. At the same time, these sequences open up the possibility for the architect to assign movement to architectural figures through the body of words. The idea to use text for confirming architectural possibility of the final materiality of the architectural concept at the same time represents an opportunity for philosophy to explore the materiality of words. Invoking what cannot be represented, the figural destabilizes the boundaries of the representable, that is, the boundaries of the discursive, striving to finally merge with it

    Cloud Cities Barcelona

    No full text
Opening on May 20th, 2022, Cloud Cities Barcelona, by artist Tomás Saraceno, invites participants into a space of communal encounter, discourse and critical speculation, suspended at a height of over 130 meters over the city of Barcelona and housed in the 360° observation deck of Mirador torre Glòries. Cloud Cities Barcelona occupies an area of 130m³ and is composed of 113 cloud spaces made of 5000 nodes connecting 6km of tensile cables. Moving through the air at a height between 4 and 10m relative to the floor, or becoming enveloped by the atmosphere of the cupola’s apex, participants can open to a novel sensory experience that converts this observatory into a suspended realm from which to look inwards and outwards, to gather and dialogue, immersed in the multiplicity of worlds made manifest in the changing shapes of passing clouds. Wandering along three paths of varying levels of complexity, participants can pause to find a rotating selection of books, in an invitation to inhabit shared time and consider alternative constellations of the urban public sphere, speculative architectures, the environmental crisis, and the entangled web of life.Napomena administratora: Autorski tim naveden od strane Nemanje Kordića
