A continuum between sculptural and structural form in the Sutjeska Memorial
The Monument on the Battle of Sutjeska (1965-71), Tjentište, BiH, is an exceptional contemporary artwork in the former Yugoslavia. The monument was designed by sculptor Milorad Živković, while the structural design was developed by the engineer Đorđe Zloković. It represents a monumental sculpture/structure consisting of two symmetrically placed reinforced concrete boulders, 19m height, and penetration. In its symbolic, conceptual, and formal sense, the sculpture is related to the battle of World War II and inspired by the spirit of high modernism and the aesthetic of the so-called freeform. This paper analyses the relation between sculptural and structural forms in this work of memorial architecture. The study results from a literature review, a review of the original design documents (including project elaborate, models, and photo materials); a site visit; and an interview with the sculptor. The paper contributes to the discipline of structural critique by highlighting the lessons learned from the specific design and construction processes, such as the importance of cross-disciplinary collaboration to solve the challenges that art posed; the value of integrating rational reasoning based on technological requirements with creativity to achieve design excellence; and the relevance of simple formulas for structural estimation and learning from experimental models.

Developing Methodological Framework for Addressing Sustainability and Heritage in Architectural Higher Education—Insights from HERSUS Project
This paper addresses the challenges of architectural higher education to cope with a state of continuous change within the relationship between heritage and sustainability. The initial assumption is that research activities based on design taxonomies—terms used in architectural discourse of heritage and sustainability—followed by fruitful analysis and discussion can contribute to the advancements in curricula design and development. Accordingly, the paper aims to develop a new methodological framework for addressing sustainability and heritage, enriching curricula design and assessment strategy. Data collection on identification and analysis of terms was carried out within the Erasmus+ Strategic Partnership titled Enhancing of Heritage Awareness and Sustainability of Built Environment in Architectural and Urban Design Higher Education (HERSUS). After the process of filtering, interpretation, and comparison of project findings, a three-fold comprehensive analysis was conducted: (a) learning outcome quantitative analysis, (b) cross-cutting analysis of spatial scales and course types, and (c) synthesis. The paper results in the methodological framework that reinforces different pedagogical approaches to heritage and sustainability derived as a result of the applied research process. The main conclusions are concerned with the applicability of the methodological framework, designed for the improvement of existing and development of new comprehensive courses and programme contents
Creating Sustainable Buildings: Structural Design Based on the Criterion of Social Benefits for Building Users
Sustainable building involves reducing negative environmental impacts with a simultaneous increase in life quality. The aim is to optimize building performances while considering all
aspects of sustainability: environmental, economic, and social. The building structure determines the
building’s performances, and it should be designed and evaluated as a subsystem of the building,
in line with the objectives of the system–building. This paper investigates structural design based
on integrated design objectives within the criterion of social benefits for users throughout the use
phase of the building, focusing on protection and safety, aspects of comfort, spatial organization,
spatial adaptability, and maintenance. The problem was studied using integrative literature review
methodology and system theory. The main findings of the research are a review and critical analysis
of the representative literature and the derived conceptual framework for structural design based on
the criterion of social benefits for building users, which should support more comprehensive and
more efficient decision-making during systemic design and optimization of buildings. The presented
integrated literature review indicates the need for the application of a systemic approach to structural
design in order to create sustainable buildings
Introduction to the UDI special issue—Reflections on Balkan urbanism
This special issue reflects three distinct discourses affiliated with the Balkans' period of sociocultural and urban transformation: Orientalist, Modern, and New Modern. During Yugoslavia's communist regime, modern practice imposed social standards that created a sociocultural melting potFootnote1 in the Balkans. The communist and social state adopted the Modern Movement as a model of unity based on a set of mandated universal norms. Consequently, this movement arose from a period of neglect and endangerment of traditional values and genius loci throughout the modernist social period, when religious and cultural variety were replaced by communist values
način kako tu problematiku naš socijalni ambijent percipira u okvirima svog bića i svog vremena.
Peripheral Perspectives: Broadening the View on Urban Nature [poster & exhibition session]
This research presents an attempt to revisit the dichotomous relationship between the urban and the rural, the city and the countryside or the space of production and the space of consumption. Major political and urban transformations of the last decade of the 20th century, along with various global crises, from climate to economic and housing, which are currently present, somehow improved the marginalized state of the countryside. Since then, we can identify a growing number of people migrating from urban to rural areas and therefore, a growing number of architects, urbanists, planners, geographers, theorists, philosophers, and others that are dealing with the concept of redefining the countryside.
What can we learn about a particular urban environment from its natural and rural surroundings? This research aims to challenge the common understanding of the urban environment, by proposing a new displaced view, a strategy of understanding the built environment through its peripheral nature and its surrounding rural sprawl. Furthermore, this research aims to emphasize and promote the impact of nature and natural surroundings on the urban environment. Instead of focusing on the built urban environment in order to understand the contemporary condition of built space, this research argues that defocusing the built and researching the perimeter instead can provide for substantial new knowledge about the urban context. Through acknowledging nature and the unbuilt, we tend to produce new knowledge about our built environments. By employing the NSA (Narrative Spatial Analytics) method, which integrates 3 research by design techniques - narrative drawing, analytical mapping and architectural montage, this research aims to investigate widely differing natural layers of the given territory, and thus offer a holistic view of the urban
environment.Poster presentation for AlterRurality 6: Re-scaling the Rural conference in Thy/Aarhus (20-23 May 2022), organised by Aarhus School of Architecture and Rural Agentur in collaboration with Thisted Municipality and ARENA

Time and Technology of the Architectural Concept: (Sur)réalité Virtuelle
In this text, I thematize the creation of the (architectural) concept and creation with
the concept, in order to present a new argument that the production of the object of
architecture is a consequence of the creation by concept. The concept translates one
form of reality into another. In these deconstructions of reality and the object, we find
the potential for ever-novel creation and an always new reality. In the changes of modes
of reality, the object always has a new reality. The non-identity created among various
forms of existence of a single object creates new ‘potency’ for new objective reality. In
the text, I present the phrase “surréalité virtuelle” to express my idea of the creation of the
new conceptual potential at the point of absence, lack, or inexistence of the architectural
object
