Urban Highway Areas: Reconsidering Morphological Elements of the Approach to Urban Studies
This study aims to characterize and map morphological changes that occurred in urban areas crossed by capital transportation infrastructures such as highways. There are geographic, morphological and classification perspectives for considering these urban areas. Bearing it in mind, this paper tries to define a method between morphological and urban studies approach to these areas. The method is applied in the urban area of the E75 highway in the urban fabric of Belgrade (Serbia). Based on the historic approach, such as the evolutive perspective of the transformation stages, observation of the transportation infrastructure and the surrounding urban space through multi-scale morphological analysis includes modernization of the city from its construction, development period and transition to the actual times. Starting from specific criteria based on individual elements or clusters in the landscape, as a result of analysis, there are specific morphological elements that provide information about the characterization of urban highway and its urban space. Street as one of the primary elements of urban form is transformed. According to the fact that the infrastructure is a problematic formal element in the study of urban form, this paper can contribute to future urban morphological studies by identifying categories of morphological elements to study the relationship between transportation infrastructure and the urban space
Automated compositions: artificial intelligence aided conceptual design explorations in architecture
The paper focuses on the challenges of the relationship between architecture and artificial intelligence
(AI), in particular, the potential of this technology to support architects' creative design processes in the
form of augmented intelligence. Conceptual architectural design is an intricate process that produces
new concepts by using prior knowledge, experience, intuition, and creativity. Artificial intelligence should
not be used during the conceptual design stage with the goal of solving a problem in a predefined search
space. Instead, potential solutions and design requirements should be explored using this technology.
The suggested approach avoids preconceived solutions and psychological inertia attributed to the designer's finite experience. The paper gives a brief critical review of the application of AI in an architectural context, especially in conceptual design. The review emphasizes changes in the design process brought about by cutting-edge strategies, methods, and tools based on AI. Further, research by design is presented to illustrate the possible use of biologically inspired algorithms in producing innovative design proposals. The applied strategy in architectural design production was based on the human-machine interface and interaction (HMI&I). Symbiotic human-machine interaction in the design process facilitates the emergence of automated compositions that display novel and unexpected forms, detail, materiality, structure, functionality, and aesthetics. This study allowed us to explore peculiar architectural design methodologies and the potential of digitally intelligent architecture

Arheologija pejzaža: Rekonstrukcija i dogradnja zgrade Muzeja Srema u Sremskoj Mitrovici
Challenges and Potentials of Green Roof Retrofit: A Case Study
Green roofs are becoming common practice in building new public build-ings and are considered the roofs for the future since they address the issue of energy and environment simultaneously, providing social, environmental and economic benefits. Despite these benefits, retrofitting an existing building with a green roof is not widely practiced. Undergoing such a project is no small task since it requires a thorough investigation of existing building’s constraints, functional, material, and technological to even begin considering design options. Therefore, this process requires specific, case-sensitive approach, especially with the aim of improving the building’s energy performance. This paper presents a methodological approach and design proposals of a green roof retrofit project, through a case study of Belgrade’s “City Housing” building. This retrofit project presents an interesting research topic since it incorporates three distinct roofs, of all of different types, different ways of accessibility and levels of privacy, varying top-to-bottom from a simple extensive roof through a semi-public semi/intensive roof garden to a ground-level public park with trees and intensive vegetation. Also, since this building provides socially signif-icant services, it is frequently visited by general public which presents a potential for introducing educational and demonstration elements in the retrofit project, not only the functional and technological ones. That way, this project can be a showcase example, promoting greening the roofs of Belgrade’s existing public buildings as a way of improving their energy performance.Поглавље је објављено у тематском зборнику "Technological Imagination in the Green and Digital Transition", у склопу низа публикација "The Urban Book Series". Affirming the concept of continuity in the modernist heritage through the notion of border: case study of the meander buildings in New Belgrade’s Block 23
City planning is shaped by urban, political, social, and other resolutions that are
materialized in the spatial plan. As an example of post-war architecture of the 20th
century, New Belgrade was developed on modernist principles focused on the essence
of dwelling, along with the idea of continuity based on the formation of fluid, liminal spaces
and designing "from the inside out". Taking into account that the blocks of New Belgrade
are particularly valued in the modern-day as locationally desirable and spatially highquality
living units, the research motive is the observed change in the way that one block
entity is considered in today's context against the system of ideas embedded in the
object’s design concept. In accordance with the aforementioned, the research premise is
that the long-term recognition of the overall quality of New Belgrade residential blocks
can be reflected in the preservation of human-scale continuity, which therefore also
ensures temporal continuity - the sustainability of project over time. The proposed
hypothesis will be researched through the analysis of continuity and observed in the form
of ideology instilled in the spatial organization, relying on the user as a reference value.
The continuity of the observed spatial zones is confined by their liminal condition.
Therefore, the border significance is determined through spatially defined phenomena of
different nature (physical, immaterial, social). The methods used in this paper are
theoretical overview, case study, and graphic analysis of the meander objects and their
wider spatial context in New Belgrade’s block 23. Graphic analysis, namely mapping of
relevant borders, sets the frameworks of spatial zones that participate in the construction
of place continuity. Research result is the establishment of a concrete relationship
between the concepts of spatial continuity in modernism, illustrated through the
phenomenon of the border, which further influences the quality of living in the building
after its construction. The research significance lies in a comprehensive understanding
of the relationship between theory and practice, that is, in understanding the process of
design and life of the chosen study objects, observing their development from the initial
idea, through project realization, until its present-day existence
Framing the context: Countryside house [STRAND 2023]
Based on the concept of borrowed landscape, the design focus is to create private space in a natural environment. The design of the residence was committed to achieving a cozy atmosphere allowing a direct relationship with nature – framing the context to create the micro ambiances in the interior, and enhance the experiential value of surroundings. To ensure a personal segment of nature in each functional unit, the standard layout of the house is decomposed. Extended communication with the dining area becomes the focal point of the house, connecting all spaces and bringing the family together
Approaches for Complex and Integrated Refurbishment to Improve Energy Efficiency and Spatial Comfort of the Existing Post-War Mass Housing Stock in Serbia
The research presents approaches to the complex refurbishment of multi-family buildings
constructed during the mass construction period in Serbia. These buildings comprise a quarter of
Serbia’s housing stock, are characterized by high energy consumption for heating, and have major
spatial and organizational deficiencies: small apartments, outdated and inflexible spatial organization, and the absence of elevators. The subject of the research is the application of the methodology of complex and integrated refurbishment by adding volume to existing multi-family buildings with the goal of achieving higher energy efficiency while remodeling and modernizing residential units and improving vertical building communications. The research presents a comparative analysis of the energy performance and spatial organization of the existing building and three variants of building improvement: Case 1 (without volumetric additions), Case 2 (with volumetric additions—relocating vertical communications), and Case 3 (with volumetric additions—expanding usable living space).
Based on the Knaufterm simulations, the energy savings for heating energy consumption compared to the existing state are 81% in Case 1, 89% in Case 2, and 87% in Case 3. Based on predefined parameters of spatial comfort, a comparative analysis of spatial comfort in residential units was conducted for all three improvement variants

Mapping the Elements of the Compact City in a Post-Socialist Neighbourhood: The Case of New Belgrade
New Belgrade was planned as an automobile-dependent city with a block structure. After the drastic changes it had been exposed to, the block structure remained untouched but with new usages, pedestrian activities, and routes as a final product. These changes are sporadic and scattered, but together there is a system of elements of a compact city making pedestrian-friendly environments. In this paper, based on a conceptual approach, these elements will be mapped in New Belgrade super-block 30, one of the mainly unchanged super-blocks. There are examples of small urban design interventions, such as new park areas, paths, and ramps. It is making the inclusion of different groups of users – from the youngest to oldest ones or recreationists and wheelchair users. Historically, some parts of super-block 30 have been left unfinished in its construction and had formed empty spaces. From undefined large areas to equipped zones dedicated to specific users, these changes created a new perception of communal public spaces by residents in super-block. An aim is to define how inclusive territory is formed. In which way do these changes contribute to making a new identity for this part of the city? They have new gathering places for activities and a new way of belonging to that super-block, at the same time creating new reasons to stay and influence the community in the super-block. In that sense, there was conducted unobstructed observation and semi-structured interviews with residents to examine if new interventions helped the community, their perception, and usage. Connections between these new pockets contribute to making new pedestrian routes as a part of the walking system through the New Belgrade block structure. Planning further development of these activities and routes can help in the transformation of post-socialist block structure neighbourhoods to compact cities and more inclusive and pedestrian-friendly environments.https://eura2023.is/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/EURA-2023-Book-of-Abstracts.pd
