Life cycle greenhouse gas emissions of hemp-lime concrete wall constructions in Serbia: The impact of carbon sequestration, transport, waste production and end of life biogenic carbon emission

    No full text
The construction industry contributes to climate change through significant greenhouse gas emissions. Utilising sustainable building materials with low embodied environmental impacts and low greenhouse gas emissions is key to future sustainable development. Bio-based materials, such as hemp-lime concrete, possess environmental advantages as they make use of a renewable raw material and can sequester CO2 from the atmosphere. Through the use of life cycle assessment methodology the study analyses the greenhouse gas emissions associated with the life cycle of a hemp-lime concrete wall and examines the effects of variations that can arise during the life cycle of the material. Sensitivity analyses were used to examine the effects of varying the hemp shiv sequestration factor, binder carbonation factor, gate to site transport distances and raw material construction waste on greenhouse gas emissions, culminating in the creation of three primary emission scenarios (average, pessimistic and optimistic). It was found that the examined variables can have a large impact on greenhouse gas emissions and the environmental perception of the material, as the optimistic life cycle scenario had a negative global warming potential (−9.696kgCO2eq.), while the pessimistic scenario had a positive global warming potential (10.165kgCO2eq.). Additionally alternative end of life scenarios were developed to examine the effects of varying hemp shiv degradability at the end of life stage, demonstrating the potentially large impacts a high factor of degradable organic carbon can have on life cycle greenhouse gas emissions

Encoding/Decoding Capitals of Classical Architectural Orders by Using Fractal Geometry: Establishing Methodology

    Get PDF
In most cases, artefacts are differentiated in terms of style they belong to – mainly visually, not mathematically. So, the main research questions of this study are both how to numerically encode stylistic regularities (peculiarities) as geometric indicators of artefacts morphology and how to decode them, namely to identify architectural style those artefacts belong to. Columns, namely their capitals are chosen as the most distinctive elements among artefacts. To elaborate on the validity of the defined principles of the aim-related methodology, a few representatives (capital samples) from each of three fundamental classical architectural orders (Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian) are used. The subject of this Paper is to establish relevant indicators of capital qualification, capital classification, and thus, referred architectural order identification. The verification of those indicators is performed by processing two sets of capitals contours (that belong to the mutually equidistant transverse and equiangular radial section planes) of each of the selected samples (namely digital 3D models). The narrower research aim is to point out that it is possible to encode not only chosen but also any other capital – by using the mentioned indicators of fractal and non-fractal nature (as a control one). The wider research aim refers to a possibility to identify order a concrete fragment of capital belongs to in terms of recognising it computationally (as confidently as possible from the mathematical probability point of view) based on the established research methodology principles. Finally, it is possible to conclude that changes of the analysed indicators trendlines behaviour (expressed by changes of its slope, roughness, continuation, etc.) accurately/precisely describe morphology-wise variations of a form that could point out subject-related stylistic variation, as well. So, this Paper demonstrates not only the fact that architectural orders capitals are true fractal objects, but rather how fractal analysis as a tool can be used to scientifically numerically encode/decode their certain characteristics (fractal features) of single- or multi-scale nature

4. Recenzija izložbe sa fotografskom dokumentacijom izvedene izložbene postavke u Paviljonu Srbije u Đardinima u Veneciji

LAGATOR STADIUM [ BAB 2023] [recognition]

    Get PDF
The Lagator football stadium, with a capacity of 8249 seats, is designed to meet the requirements of the category 4 prescribed by the UEFA Regulation. The process of designing the stadium requires a careful attitude towards the existing physical structure, a balanced approach between a strong physiognomy of a future city landmark and the need to fit the intervention in the existing context. Those circumstances have guided the design of the stadium that gives an impression of elevated structure, integrating the surroundings in a multi-layered interior of the complex. Perceiving the superstructure significantly contributes to the impression of self-perception of the environment, of how we present our own paradigm of rebuilding the city and the vision of future urban ambiance. Taking all that into account, this project aims to establish new city spots that people will recognize and like, and at the same time consider as their own representative, special enough and yet oriented toward global trends

The Prospects of Towns in Serbia: Current Challenges and Policy Framework

    Get PDF
Serbia belongs to the European countries that had established a well-balanced network of urban settlements during the 19th and 20th century. This was almost an imperative in territorial policy during the socialist period, within the second Yugoslavia (1945-1991), when towns and small cities were specially supported as the main link in urban-rural cooperation network. However, this system has been critically broken since the beginnings of post-socialist transition. This period has brought a neoliberal market economy side by side with fading of the role of state institutions and the overall fragmentation of space in South-Eastern Europe. As a result, the paramount majority of towns in Serbia are shrinking today, as a sharp contrast to the rise of few big cities. The aim of this paper is to research the official urban and territorial policy in Serbia regarding the development prospects of towns. Their challenging current state is not well defined in local context, because urban shrinkage as a critical indicator is a relatively new phenomenon in local urbanisation. In this situation, the examination how relevant Serbian legislative, planning, and strategic policy documents concern the issue of the development of (small) (big) towns vs. cities is very important and it is the backbone of this research. The guidance to examine them is the most relevant EU documents that are framed to comprehend and systemise the current role and future of (small) towns at European perspective. In line with this stance, this research presents the state of art in national urban policy in the matters of town development, as well as the possibilities how it can be modified and improved to better suits the future of Serbian towns
