Culture Places and Local Knowledge Production: an Introduction

    No full text
Placemaking is a method of planning, designing, and managing the quality of open public places through active collaboration between professionals, citizens, local government, and stakeholders in order to achieve an attractive, comfortable, safe, accessible, healthy urban environment. It usually combines “expert knowledge” and “local knowledge”, and from both perspectives of top-down and bottom-up approaches, which result in knowledge exchange and conversion. During any placemaking process, participants share knowledge and learn new skills to transform their own environments, and as a result, they can help experts to discover and preserve the identity of the place and its cultural needs. But we need to remember that understanding placemaking is not possible without understanding “how” it can be done and what the most effective ways in which placemaking in urban spaces takes place are. It is particularly pivotal to learn from the methods of placemaking in different cases as critical comparison of the methods of placemaking in relation to residents, decision-makers and users of public places can yield better outcomes for more meaningful connections to and meaning-making about space and places. In the first section of Volume 2 of this placemaking trilogy, we are focusing on the importance of “local knowledge” that informs different kinds of methods that are employed by practitioners, scholars and academics engaging residents and citizens across different age groups, gender, ethnic backgrounds, social classes and so on. The chapters in this section propose innovative and critical insights into methods of placemaking which range from participatory methods to different types of surveys. The chapters also present the shortcomings of these methods when compared with each other in different countries. This introductory chapter to the current section, hence, highlights the common themes that have run across these five chapters (Chapter 2 to 6). It is aimed not to provide a summary of each chapter, but to highlight the critical aspects of these pieces that provide a cohesive argument as a whole through their diversity in context, methods and arguments. The general goal of these five chapters is to analyse, describe and tell the culture of local knowledge production in the placemaking process, through well-structured possible methods, selected from the extensive literature now available on methods for participatory planning (Foroughi et al., 2023; Stelzle & Noennig, 2017; Innes & Booher, 2004; Healey, 1997; Friedmann, 1987)

Illusions, delusions, confusions? Navigating the Future of Contemporary Cities [predavanje po pozivu]

    No full text
Contemporary cities, as the ever-changing nodes of dynamic global networks, transform their character, performances and aesthetic in order to face increasing challenges and to respond to the upcoming ecological, technological and social imperatives. Although generating a number of problems, they also provide various solutions which should preferably lead toward sustainable and resilient development. This process is continuously debated and upgraded, but it does not always create a wishful environment of higher efficiency, equity and wellbeing for all inhabitants. Instead, many cities have to deal with a combustible concoction of increased insecurity, fears, threats and overall anxiety, which has a severe destabilising effect on the fragile systems of needs, values and priorities. However, urban space has always had a unique role in every phase of socio-technical change, providing an immersive stage for the various levels and tools of action and interpretation. Materialised through architecture, urban planning and design, their impact reflects in new spatial concepts, hosting directly or indirectly every wave of technological (r)evolution, as well as its benefits and repercussions for both the society and the environment. Considering the complexity of ongoing global processes, which accelerate the pace of urban changes, the paper focuses on the relationship between the detected problems and the innovative responses implemented in urban space. The emerging typologies and their anticipated/achieved impacts will be dicusessed, targeting the issues of poverty, crime, migration, ecological and climate (un)awareness, as well as the needs of sensitive groups (determined by age, gender, ethnicity etc.). These small and large scale transformations and modifications, often with questionable and colliding effects, are frequently supported by 'green' rhetoric, although their actual sustainability and resilience might be overshadowed by influential political and financial drivers. Therefore, the content of numerous lists ranking the competitive advantages of each city displays both the contemporary urban priorities and the recent (im)balance of power, testifying about the paradigm shifts which should facilitate our efforts in mitigating the consequences of climate extremes, natural disasters or socio-economic turbulences.Uvodno predavanje po poziv

Élan vital Александра Дерока - естетика и поетика слободе [апстракт]

    No full text

A Dictionary-Driven Review of Digital Methods and Tools for Urban Patterns Decoding: SPATTERN Perspectives

    No full text
The study explores the emerging intersection of urban morphology and digital technologies, focusing on the methods and tools employed to analyze and interpret urban patterns. With rapid urbanization and the resultant complex urban forms, understanding these patterns is crucial for sustainable city planning and design. This contribution presents the findings from the initial deliverable of the SPATTERN project which aims to advance environmentally sensitive urban development of spa settlements in Serbia through the affirmation of twin transition. First SPATTERN deliverable provides a comprehensive review of existing methodological approaches by synthesizing insights from an extensive literature review and content analysis, alongside showcasing relevant tools and methods. The research is performed through systematic literature review combined with the visualization of bibliometric networks and dictionary design and development through 4-cycle research protocol: (1) data search and selection, (2) data clustering and co-occurrence, (3) dictionary development, and (4) factsheets analysis. The review encompasses an extensive analysis of selected terms (keywords) highlighting how digital tools facilitate the collection, visualization, and analysis of urban data. Moreover, the review addresses the challenges and limitations associated with these methods, such as data quality, integration issues, and the need for interdisciplinary collaboration. This dictionary not only standardizes the terminology but also provides a conceptual map for researchers and practitioners navigating the complex nature of urban pattern analysis. By bridging the gap between traditional approaches for urban analysis and cutting-edge digital approaches, the findings advocate for a more informed and systematic use of digital tools and methods in urban morphology, thus promoting more resilient and adaptable urban environments

MVJ – Law office interior [STRAND 2024]

    No full text
The relocation of a law office to a historic pre-war building in Dorćol has prompted the need for a new approach to employee organization, tailored to the unique spatial characteristics of the salon apartment. The original functional layout remained almost untouched to maintain the flow of space as the main quality. Wooden floors and light walls with long curtains became a subtle backdrop for furniture pieces chosen or specially designed with particular care, considering the frequent client visits.Project team members: Katarina Crljenica, dia; Tamara Koneska, m. arch; Photography: Jovana Rakezi

Built in 1891, the Banja Luka Stadt Bahnhof building, or Railway station Banja Luka City, stands as a significant testament to the Austro-Hungarian presence in Banja Luka. At the time it was built, the station defined the city’s first green zone and articulated public area in Banja Luka. In 1968, the building underwent a change in function from a railway station to a bus station due to a decrease in railway traffic. Although the bus station platforms were aligned with the previous railway configuration, no relevant alterations were made on the building itself. In 1969, a devastating earthquake struck Banja Luka, causing extensive damage to residential and public structures, including healthcare and cultural facilities. However, the unfortunate event served as a catalyst for another typological shift in the former railway building – the establishment of the Banja Luka Art Gallery, which occurred in 1971. Ten years later, in 1981, the building underwent significant modifications to accommodate the specific requirements of a new program-gallery space. The reconstruction project was led by architect Enes Kartal, while the interior space was designed by architect Božidar Lapen. In 2004, the building was renamed as Museum of Contemporary Art of Republic of Srpska, and in 2007 it was listed as a national monument by the National Monuments Commission of Bosnia and Herzegovina and is therefore entitled to special preservation measures. Finally, in 2022, the major reconstruction project for the Museum of Contemporary Art of Republic of Srpska was developed by Lopičić&Lopičić Arhitekte and Pavle Stamenović. This project, awarded at the 45th Salon of Architecture organized by the Serbian Museum of Applied Arts in Belgrade, introduces a new spatial organization that aligns with the museum’s new program and curatorial approach

The proposal starts from the analysis of the existing state, on the basis of which six narratives are formulated, and further illustrated through the spatial reality (analysis of existing state) and spatial possibility (diagramming of potentials for future transformation). Design framework consists of programming matrix, typology of pavilions and spatial articulation of program determinants. The design is characterized by a contextually sensitive approach that respects environmental conditions, as well as prescribed urban parameters for four specific ambient units, but is also reflected in the creation of a colorful spectrum of activities in the space, and different scenarios regarding the position and character of individual typologies.Консултант: Ајвор Самуелс (Ivor Samuels), Сарадник на припреми 3Д модела: Богдан Ђоки
