    Contribution provides insights from the first phase of the Scientific Project SPATTERN (spattern.org) which tends to develop digitally enabled research infrastructure for affirmation and interpretation of urban patterns within spa settlements in Serbia from perspective of urban morphology.     (Re)presenting the Women in Serbian Architecture: The Trajectories of Creativity, Recognition and Memory

    The paper considers the role and the position of women architects in the contemporary Serbian research and practice, focusing on the activities of the Belgrade International Architectural Week (BINA), a unique architectural event established in 2006 by the Association of Belgrade Architects (ABA) and the Belgrade Cultural Centre. Due to a prominent position among the public and the professionals, BINA’s interest in the work of women architects opened some new horizons of perception, enabling the (re)reading of urban space and architectural legacy while highlighting the actual contribution of women in architecture. The visibility of their work in practice and research has especially increased since 2014, through BINA’s workshops, architectural walks, book promotions, exhibitions, interactive round tables, lectures and the presentations of young architectural offices. While preparing these events and studying the available sources, BINA, as well as the participating scholars and practitioners, also identified certain problems related to the poor or almost nonexistent recognition of actual contributions of female architects, especially in project teams. Within the scope of contextual specificities, the conducted activities will be evaluated, while the detected problems and limitations will be considered as the potential triggers of/for professional empowerment of female architects

    Rad istražuje pristupačnost naselja Cerak Vinogradi i Višnjička Banja u Beogradu za korisnike invalidskih kolica. U Srbiji su tokom poslednje dve decenije usvojeni brojni zakoni i propisi koji obavezuju projektante i izvođače da grade pristupačne prostore, ali nedostatak sistema kontrole primene ovih propisa dovodi do njihove nepravilne implementacije. Ovaj rad istražuje zahteve koje bi trebalo uključiti u logiku projektovanja kako bi se osigurala pristupačnost stambenih naselja za korisnike invalidskih kolica. Fokus je na naseljima Cerak Vinogradi i Višnjička Banja. Cilj rada je predlaganje preporuka za projektovanje novih pristupačnih naselja i ocena trenutne situacije kroz izradu mape za orijentaciju i rešavanje problema. Metod istraživanja uključuje analizu pristupačnosti javnih prostora i ulaza u zgrade putem terenskog istraživanja i mapiranja pristupačnosti. Rezultati pokazuju da naselje Cerak Vinogradi ima bolje rešenu pristupačnost ulaza, dok Višnjička Banja pokazuje izraženiji obrazac nepristupačnosti javnih prostora. U naselju Cerak Vinogradi problemi pristupačnosti uglavnom nastaju zbog niskokvalitetne materijalizacije popločanja i brojnih "slepih ulica". U Višnjičkoj Banji problemi su izraženiji zbog neadekvatno projektovanih prolaza i velikih visinskih razlika.The paper investigates the wheelchair accessibility of neighborhoods Cerak Vinogradi and Višnjička Banja in Belgrade, Serbia. Accessibility plays an important role in social sustainability as a part of sustainable urban development. In Serbia, during the last two decades, numerous laws and regulations have been adopted that oblige designers and contractors to build accessible spaces, but the lack of a control system for the implementation of these regulations leads to improper implementation. This paper researches the requirements that should be included in the design logic in order to ensure the accessibility of residential areas for wheelchair users. The focus is on the Cerak Vinogradi and Višnjička Banja neighborhoods, significant examples of late modernism. The goal of the paper is the proposition of design reccomendations for the formation of new accessible settlements and assessment of the current situation with the formation of a map for orientation and problem-solving. The research method includes the analysis of the accessibility of public spaces and entrances to buildings through field research and accessibility mapping. The results show that Cerak Vinogradi has better entrance accessibility, while Višnjička Banja shows a clearer pattern of inaccessibility of public spaces. In the Cerak Vinogradi neighborhood, accessibility problems mainly arise from the low-grade materialization of paving and numerous "dead ends". In Višnjička Banja, accessibility problems are more pronounced due to inadequately designed cross passages and large height differences. Additionally, design logic to be applied in future projects to ensure accessibility is identified. This includes placing streets in the direction of isohypsis to minimize height differences, carefully planning building entrances to avoid internal obstacles such as stairs, ensuring continuity and legibility of space, as well as properly solving parking problems to ensure the smooth movement of people in wheelchairs

    Building maintenance in public toilet customers’ personal feeling of safety

    Ovaj rad istražuje značajnu ulogu procesa održavanja sa aspekta bezbednosti i sigurnosti korisnika javnih toaleta. Analizira se efikasnost različitih mera održavanja, uključujući projektovanje prostora, osvetljenje, ventilaciju, čišćenje i bezbednosne mere s ciljem smanjenja rizika od neželjenih situacija prilikom korišćenja ove vrste objekata, kao i poboljšanje osećaja sigurnosti korisnika. Kroz pregled relevantne literature i analizu izabranog primera objekta javnog toaleta u Beogradu, autor rada identifikuje najbolje prakse i daje preporuke za optimizaciju procesa održavanja radi unapređenja bezbednosti, zaštite i udobnosti korisnika. Rad doprinosi razumevanju važnosti procesa održavanja za bezbednost i kvalitet javnih toaleta, nudeći smernice za projektovanje, materijalizaciju, opremanje, unapređenje postojećih objekata, kao i poboljšanje njihove efikasnosti i korisničkog iskustva.This paper explores the significant role of the maintenance process in customers’ personal feeling of safety and security when using public toilets. The effectiveness of various maintenance measures are analyzed, including the following: space design, lighting, ventilation, cleaning and security measures with the aim of reducing the risk of unwanted and hazardous situations when using this type of public facility, as well as with the aim of improving the sense of customers’ safety. Along with the review of the relevant literature and one selected example of a public toilet facility in Belgrade, the author of the paper identifies and analyzes the best practices and recommendations for optimizing the maintenance process in order to improve the customers’ safety, protection and comfort. This paper contributes to the understanding of the importance of the building maintenance process for the safety and quality of public toilets, offering guidelines for designing, building and interior material selection, equipping, improving existing facilities, as well as improving their efficiency and customers’ experience

    Inverted Domes of Sports Halls in New Belgrade and Nis: Analysis from the Aspect of Structural Art

    Sports Halls in New Belgrade and Nis represent outstanding twentieth-century Serbian structural engineering examples. The structural systems of both halls were designed by architect and civil engineer George Zlokovic. The roofs of these halls are inverted domes spanning 60 and 70 meters made of prestressed cables suspended between the outer reinforced concrete ring and inner steel ring and stabilized with thin prefabricated concrete plates. This interpretative research discusses the design and construction process and presents a critical analysis of buildings from the standpoint of Structural Art. The study's conclusions were based on literature research, a review of archive documents, site visits, and a recording of the conversation with the author. The paper contributes to the development of structural critique by highlighting lessons learned from specific cases that should not be overlooked in current times, such as (1) the importance of research for design; (2) the significance of comprehensive and integrated treatment of diverse building aspects such as form, function, and structure by the reconciliation of architectural and engineering demands to provide design quality; (3) the benefit of linking rational with creative thinking to achieve design excellence; and (4) the benefits of the nonconventional approach to design and construction aiming to improve building economy and efficiency and produce aesthetically pleasing solutions

    Towards construction of customized large-scale architectural elements using 3D printing technology

    Recent advances in computational design and additive manufacturing have impacted the architecture, engineering, and construction industry, requiring a revision of common architectural design practices and processes. Rapid development and usage of digital fabrication, especially 3D Printing (3DP), has enabled the design and construction of more complex forms. This paper reviews different applications of 3DP for the construction of load-bearing architectural elements and the potential and limitations of these approaches. Starting from the hypothesis that 3DP facilitates the production of customized, non-standard, and complex elements, the research question of this paper is: How can the potentials of these technologies be fully exploited? This paper aims to identify relevant publications, collect and systematize 3DP methods, and then gather and analyze the present state-of-the-art in industry, using literature review methodology to illustrate the 3DP technology used in the industry. Relevant projects are then identified and categorized based on the element typology. Next, the advantages and disadvantages of the presented approaches are identified and systematized in relation to the level of design freedom, complexity and customization ability. Finally, the paper proposes a set of strategies for more efficient fabrication of customized architectural elements using 3DP technologies

    Sustainable Fluidity in Aesthetical Perspectives of Contemporary Architecture: Post-Industrial Development of Danube’s Waterfront in Belgrade

    This paper aims to position the aesthetic perspective of contemporary architecture in the context of urban sustainability. Fluidity is the main concept this research is based on. The phenomenon of fluidity is defined by the constant variability of contextual conditions, hyper-production of sensations and perceptual experiences in modern cities, which increasingly affect notions of aesthetic values in architecture and urban space in general. In the modern context in which dynamics of the exchange of information is the main carrier of cultural value systems, the experience of architectural space can be understood as a kind of communication tool that is realised through direct, sensory experience. The aesthetic dimension of architecture articulates this act, as a form of cultural exchange, and interaction defines the degree of the associativity of the content, controlling the way of interaction between the user and the environment and forming a certain experience. The importance of spatial experience in the cultural dimension of architecture is very important in aesthetical perspectives of sustainable development, which position the experience of space in the domain of the activation of feelings, emotions, and communication with all senses, as well as diversity, inclusion, and well-being. By the actuality and importance of dealing with the topics of re-use of built, industrial, heritage and the New European Bauhaus design curricula, this research intersects the main postulates of new approaches with the results of teaching experience from Diploma Master studio at the University of Belgrade – Faculty of Architecture, led by professor Nebojša Fotirić and Teaching Assistant Bojana Jerković-Babović. The graduate studio topic is Making of a city: post-industrial development of the area between Dunavska Street and the Danube‘s Belgrade waterfront, where the importance of possible instrumentalizations of theoretical perspectives in research design, expanding the existing scope of architectural design and operational knowledge and skills, is recognized

    Torre Rinalda predstavlja integralni deo sistema priobalnih kula osmatračnica koje se prostiru duž obala oblasti Pulje (Puglia) u Italiji. Iako deo važnog kulturnog nasleđa Italije, kule nisu adekvatno zaštićene i revitalizovane u odnosu na savremeni trenutak njihovog postojanja. Prepoznat je neiskorišćen potencijal za povezivanje priobalnih kula osmatračnica u kulturnu rutu koja bi predstavljala svojevrsno putovanje kroz istoriju grada Leče i njegovog nasleđa. Kako bi se to ostvarilo, neophodno je identifikovati zajedničku nit između postojećeg sistema kula, koja bi mogla da služi njihovom prostornom i simboličkom povezivanju, ali i da se primeni na pojedinačne kule, bez obzira na stanje u kojem se one trenutno nalaze. Zajednička nit je prepoznata, pre svega, u nekadašnjoj funkciji sistema kula osmatračnica usmerenoj na signaliziranje upozorenja, ali i u načinu na koji je sam sistem upozorenja funkcionisao – slanjem dimnih signala danju i paljenjem vatre noću. Savremena interpretacija nekadašnje funkcije postaje okosnica projekta očuvanja i revitalizacije Torre Rinalda i njegov centralni motiv. Nekadašnja platforma za osmatranje projektom postaje vidikovac, dok se ranije korišćeni dim i vatra prevode u igru vodene pare i svetlosti, čime se čitav sistem priobalnih kula osmatračnica vizuelno i simbolički povezuje u jednistveni prostorno-programski potez, tj. rutu. Međutim, za razliku od nekadašnjih simbola opasnosti, reinterpretirani dim i vatra indikatori su vremenskih promena – vodena para pokazuje smer i brzinu vetra, a promene u boji osvetljenja nagoveštavaju sunčane ili kišne dane na moru. Sistem svetlosti i pare je zamišljen kao solarni sistem i različito postavljen unutar pojedinačnih kula u zavisnosti od stanja u kome se one nalaze: da stoji samostalno i simbolično označava svoje mesto u slučaju kada je kula u potpunosti u ruševinama ili da je integrisan u obnovljenu kulu u slučaju kada je moguće postići njen prvobitni volumen
