Pristup zasnovan na performansama u projektovanju prostornih struktura slobodne forme
This paper is related to the fact that use of computational tools for form generation, analysis and digital fabrication (CAD/CAM/CAE) in an efficient way enables accurate representation of ideas, simulation of diverse impact and production of rational design solutions. Application of geometrical and numerical computational methods and adoption of performance based priorities enables formal exploration in constrained conditions and improvement of architectural engineering design process. Implementation of advanced technologies in 3D digital design process facilitates production of unconventional complex designs, their verification by construction of physical models and experimental diagnostics, as phase preceding construction of real structure. Within this work concept that provides design of non-standard, context-specific, freeform structure using rapid prototyping technology and 3D optical measurement will be reviewed. The analyzed design solution of roof structure above atrium of National Museum in Belgrade has a function to demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach. Primena geometrijskih i numeričkih kompjuterskih metoda i usvajanja prioriteta zasnovanih na performansama omogućava formalna istraživanja u ograničenim uslovima i unapređenje procesa projektovanja u oblasti arhitektonskog inženjerstva. Implementacija naprednih digitalnih tehnologija u 3D proces projektovanja omogućava produkciju nekonvencionalnih kompleksnih oblika, njihovu verifikaciju konstrukcijom fizičkih modela i eksperimentalnu dijagnostiku, kao faze koja prethode izgradnji realne strukture. U okvirima ovog rada razmatraće se koncepti koji omogućavaju projektovanje nestandardne, kontekstualno specifične strukture slobodne forme primenom tehnologije brze proizvodnje prototipova i 3D optičkog merenje. Analizirano projektno rešenje krova iznad atrijuma Narodnog Muzeja u Beogradu u funkciji je potvrđivanja efikasnosti ovakvog pristupa
Principi i modaliteti primene novih medija u arhitekturi
The contemporary age is marked by the rapidly advanced digital revolution, unstoppable rise of computer technologies and omnipresence of technological advancements in all aspects of everyday life. In the information era, computer technologies have become pervasive, ubiquitous and dominant. Their hybridization with previously present media forms resulted in the emergence of a new and exuberant field of new media and technologies. New media is a hybrid field of computer based technological forms, which are used in contemporary practice, not only as tool, but also as an expressive medium. Because of the complex nature of new media, the field is extremely hybrid, positioned at the intersection of art, science and culture. Its emerged cultural paradigm is scientific culture, in which dominant characteristics are technological art and cultural forms, as well as information and techno society. In this overall context, architecture is not an isolated phenomenon. The new media have influenced the field of architecture too, offering new possibilities, features, design methodologies and principles for conceptualizing and developing architectural space. In architectural practice different modalities of the new media are being used. These modalities initiated the emergence of the field of new media architecture. The distinction of these state-of-the-art types of architectural space, together with the principles and concepts they rely on, were the main focus and main contribution of the research presented in this paper.
Lighting up the Landmarks with Information About the Environment
In order to ensure sustainable development of our cities, we all have to do our part. There is a growing awareness about environmental problems, and citizens want to be informed and find the information about the environment relevant for all, not just for those who are making decisions. Many communities want to have a role in making their cities attractive and livable. However, the public cannot always easily perceive the causes of environmental problems-e.g., neighborhood or city-level energy consumption, air and water pollution, or noise levels. Making such information easily accessible and understandable to all is the challenge this paper addresses. This paper argues for the use of public buildings and local landmarks as a means for communicating information about the quality of the environment by employing their existing illumination systems as a medium for transferring and disseminating the respective information. Instead of using one color or randomly changing colors (as is a case employed on many public buildings nowadays), the proposal this paper advocates for is to connect the light color to the corresponding environmental parameter, and, in this way, convey the information. For instance, if CO2 is taken as a relevant parameter, when the emissions go above a certain level, the building could glow red. The intensity of color or a choice of color corresponds to the parameter that is measured. This is an informative, non-invasive, simple, and inexpensive solution that can help in raising awareness about the environmental problems and, at the same time, make the public informed. The information presented in this way is easy to understand, it is visible to a large number of people and " glanceable". Furthermore, it could support the involvement of a community in coping with the environmental issues by spurring a bottom-up action and making the community one step closer to the ideal of making their cities sustainable and resilient. The approach in developing this system is embodied in the concept of smart cities. It is also viewed as a contribution to smart solutions and the use of technology in a smart way, as well as a way that contributes to the public good. In addition to presenting and justifying this proposal that is based on several parameters of sustainability, the paper will also discuss the potential benefits of the system for raising the public awareness, and will reflect on the relationship between community involvement and urban planning
Culture and leisure: affirmation of cultural heritage in the architectural discourse
The emphasis on the modern way of recognizing the special values of historical context area imposes a modern way of relating to the same, in order of their successful conservation, maintenance and affirmation in the today’s’ conditions. Relying on the definition of cultural heritage as a set of resources with specific values of community’s past from the contemporary point of view, the work starts from the premise of keeping the value of cultural property by their participating as active systems today. Architecture, as well as field and activity which connects the passive and the active component of space in a creative way, in this research has been recognized as the holder of their compliance in the areas of cultural property under the conditions dictated by the contemporary context. From the modern point of view, the historical component of cultural heritage spaces brings a set of performances recognized as values. Sensuality, aesthetics and vagueness as the general characteristics of the area of the historical context, and character of their past as properties related to the cultural specificities of individual space heritage, architectural discourse interpreted by the phenomenon of experience. Experience as an active component of the connection of area and the user opens up the potential of use, revival and connecting of the historic place with other spatial and functional components of the city. Interpretation of cultural component as inherited value and culture as an integral part of life, makes the connection between passive and active side of historical and contemporary space. Relying on the theory that the activities and facilities of culture classified in the area of recreation, treatment of heritage spaces opens new creative potential of modernization and transformation through connection with the areas of recreation and tourism. The work is based on theoretical grounds which analyze concepts of the historical context experience and recreational experience, and give possible base of connecting historical places, recreation and tourism through the architectural methods
Urban Design Competition and Megaprojects in a Context of Identity of Cultural Heritage: Case Study Belgrade`s Riverfronts
Industrial heritage sites that have lost their original function represent significant and
valuable cultural heritage which is a part of the urban memory and material evidence of
the past, with whose decay a city is losing a part of its history. This paper deals with the
problem of preserving identity of industrial heritage sites in the process of sustainable urban
regeneration. More precisely, paper deals with the problem of preserving tangible as well
as intangible attributes of industrial heritage identity within a context of contemporary
projects of urban regeneration. The significance of this problem lies within the contradiction
between the industrial heritage sites as places intended for new urban functions in
accordance with strategies of contemporary urban development and the industrial heritage
sites as places with the inherited spatial, functional and cultural values important to the
community. Therefore, the main planning task of sustainable regeneration is finding the
balance between preservation and change of industrial heritage sites. In planning practice
these changes are most often driven by economic and environmental interests, while
cultural values as active components of material culture and urban memory of citizens are
neglected. On the other hand, this problem arises from the ambiguous notion of industrial
heritage identity, as well as from the lack of appropriate planning tools for identifying and
analysing identity attributes that are valuable to preserve.
The aim of this paper is to draw attention to the complexity of identity of industrial heritage
stemming from the various tangible as well as intangible values of cultural heritage.
The paper advocates for using the concept of place as a framework for identifying and
investigating identity attributes of industrial heritage sites which contribute to decision
making in the initial phase of planning process. The planning treatment of industrial
heritage identity in the process of riverfronts regeneration is analysed on the example of
urban design competitions and megaprojects in Belgrade. The riverfront regeneration has
been initiated through a series of urban plans, projects and design competitions. Some
of these plans are located within two planned urban megaprojects: “Danube port” and
“Belgrade on water”. Analysis show that the imbalance between the ambitions of the
city (authorities, professional associations) and current economic capabilities (overscale,
expensive, not considering implementation in phases) is one of the main problems for the
implementation of the plans and projects
Metode korišćene u radu uključuju: analizu fizičkih karakteristika prostora, opservaciju i anketiranje korisnika prostora i simulaciju termalnog komfora korišćenjem softvera RayMan. posmatranje aktivnosti u prostoru i anketiranje korisnika prostora vršeno je u toku letnjih meseci 2016. godine. Rezultati istraživanja pokazuju da termalni komfor otvorenih prostora u velikoj meri zavisi od fizičkih karakteristika prostora kao što su: oblik, dimenzije, materijalizacija, prisustvo zelenila, vrste zelenila, visina objekata po obodu i dr.Urban public open spaces are very important because
everyday activities and social contacts of the inhabitants take
place there. The intensity of use of public spaces depends on
their quality, primarily on thermal comfort. Climatic
conditions and inclusive urban design affect the microclimate
conditions of open space - thermal comfort, and therefore the
intensity of space use. The research analyzes the influence of
physical properties of city square on thermal comfort and the
use of space. For the purpose of the paper two city squares in
Niš and Leskovac built in the second half of the 20th century,
were analyzed. The research methods include: analysis of
physical properties of the space, observation and direct survey
of space users, and simulation of thermal comfort using
RayMan software. Observation of the activities in the area and
users survey was carried out during the summer months of
2016. The results of the research show that thermal comfort of
open spaces depends to a large extent on the physical
properties of the space, such as: shape, dimensions,
materialization, presence and types of greenery, height of
surrounding objects, etc
Potential for for energy efficiency and CO2 emission reduction by refurbishment of housing building stock built before 1919 in Serbia
Single and multi-family houses built before 1919 account for 3.8 % of total Serbian housing stock. However, due to their important cultural and historic values, and continuous tenant occupation, these buildings nowadays require rehabilitation both because of contemporary energy performance demands, as well as for the need of achieving a desired level of living comfort. Since these buildings are often subject to heritage protection regime, issues of their refurbishment are more complex than those of the rest of the housing building stock. Their treatment also differs from refurbishment of other historic buildings, due to the sustained residential function. The National Typology of Residential Buildings in Serbia was developed within the TABULA ("Typology Approach for Building Stock Energy Assessment") project that had common methodology for 15 European participating countries, where Serbia was the only country from the Western Balkans region. This paper presents a detail study of specifics and refurbishment potentials of the selected building period, exploring a different approach towards the topic of energy refurbishment, having in mind all the characteristics that define presented building types. Although identified through national survey, the building types analysed in this paper can be found throughout the region, within the similar context. Furthermore, in urban areas of many European cities, these century-old buildings are often subject of gentrification processes with increasing interest in their thorough rehabilitation, while in rural areas old buildings are often converted to accommodate tourists
Towards the Conceptual Changes in Architectural Education: Adjusting to Climate Change
This article gives an insight into the problem of climate change awareness in the process of architectural education. The course Urban Structure at the University of Belgrade, Faculty of Architecture, is used as a case study that reveals a sensitive relationship between the university curriculum, teaching methodologies, students' experiences/obtained knowledge and the local background. The course included Problem Based Learning method in order to increase applicability of up-to-date knowledge on climate change. The results were tested before and after taking the course, via survey based on the semi-open type of questionnaire, distributed among 246 course attendees. The testing was conducted twice, during the school years 2013-2014 and 2014-2015. The comparison between the knowledge acquire via theory (the test results provided at the beginning of the course) and the knowledge obtained by Problem Based Learning (the results obtained after the course ended) confirmed the increased level of student's awareness of environmental problems, as well as the extended scope of their ability to respond to occurring problems caused by climate change. Furthermore, the results obtained by a questionnaire are used for setting of new educational guidelines
Beogradski pasaži XX veka - analiza tipa i kritičko ispitivanje prostornog potencijala
As noted by Walter Benjamin, the spatial phenomenon of a covered glass-roofed passage, stretched between two streets and inserted inside a city block, encapsulated the extreme cultural ambivalence: by expressing repression through the ideology of consumerism and expressing freedom through the utopia of abundance. The hidden emancipatory potentials of the city passages, observed closely in a particular case, represent the subject of this paper and the analytical probe that examines the historical conditions of a particular enterprise. When the Passage of Nikola Spasić was constructed in the main pedestrian and shopping street of Belgrade in 1912, the époque of Parisianstyle arcades had already passed. Observed in this broader perspective, the construction of the Passage, according to the project of Nikola Nestorović, one of the most prominent Serbian architects of the period, was only a late echo of the Parisian 18th century invention. The comparison and contention between the three chosen, realized and unrealized, transpositions of the Passage in Belgrade, designed by different prime architects of the time, in relation to Benjamin's idea of space with emancipative potential, correspondingly point out the protean capacity and open up new alternatives in the context of contemporary production of space, particularly important in the light of a changing global culture. Upoređivanjem i ispitivanjem prolaza/pasaža u urbanoj istoriji Beograda tokom XX veka, rad analizira transpoziciju ovog tipa u kontekstu proizvodnje prostora u različitim društvenim okvirima, i problematizuje je kroz aktuelna pitanja savremene devastacije i redukcije javnog domena i javne sfere na globalnom nivou. Ovim radom nastavljaju se i produbljuju prethodno započeta naučna ispitivanja autorki, kroz novu predmetnu građu, problemske okvire i istraživačka pitanja proverena u redefinisanoj kritičkoj perspektivi, koja se bave emancipatorskim potencijalom prostora posebnih tipologija, izvan uobičajenih definicija i interpretacija
