Energy consumption and CO2 emission reductions trough refurbishment of residential buildings’ roofs by applying the green roof system: Case study
Climate changes which we are experiencing at the moment are affecting the entire globe. Serbia, as a developing country, is in the process of defining its own energy strategy and priorities when it comes to the problem of increased energy consumption in its building stock. Research shows that residential sector consumes the largest quantity of energy. CO2 emissions present another big problem which is in a direct correlation with energy consumption. Green roofs have multiple positive effects on buildings and their surroundings which make them a desirable option for retrofitting roofs. The aim of this paper is to investigate thermal properties of chosen green roof system and its potential to positively influence energy consumption for heating buildings and therefore CO2 emissions trough refurbishing existing old flat roofs. New Belgrade was chosen for this research for its unique urban characteristics - existence of large number of similar or identical buildings, which have same structural characteristics and similar surroundings. For the purpose of this paper, blocks 45 and 70 were chosen. Results of this research are applicable on all of the 132 buildings found at this location, which have total roof area of 90990m2. By calculating energy quantity needed for heating the building with the existing roof and two hypothetical models, which have green roof, it was possible to quantify energy savings, which are in a direct correlation with CO2 emissions. A control roof was introduced in order to examine if the proposed green roof possesses better characteristics than a traditional solution, most commonly used in Serbia. Apart from energy savings, overall impact of the green roof on the CO2 reduction per building was calculated. By multiplying these results, we drew the conclusion that a project such as greening roofs of existing residential buildings in blocks 45 and 70 would have a noticeable effect on both the energy savings and CO2 emissions
Koncept fragmentarnosti - između forme I neforme
Drawing on the idea that abstraction of architectural design is repeatedly demonstrated by new concepts, and that the idea of the design contains a fragment of its internal laws, the paper raises the question of alteration of forms towards new time-space categories. In contrast to Euclidean geometry based on the continuity of geometric forms, fragmented forms draw upon deformations and variability, operating in the limit zones, for the design, zones of the greatest creativity and potentiality. A new understanding of reality shaped by digitization of all systems has created the basis for forms of self-organization, openness, contingency, and emergence. What we have before us is basically a new aesthetics that goes beyond the horizon of visible in a way that allows the whole world and all its parts to be seen in a completely new, immaterial way. This means that architectural forms appear in the visibility zones, together with the forms of their systemic dislocation.
Kreativan grad - izazovan koncept
Culture and creativity were always an essential part of city growth, but today they are integrated in the life of cities as a part of official strategies or as an action of a group of artists and people, working in the cultural and creative industries. Culture and creativity form part of many concepts of urban development promoted as an acceptable response to the challenges of globalization. As a part of urban development policy, they are expected to enable sustainable development, and they rely on human potential, local comparative advantages and development of technologies. The main principles of these concepts are communication, social networks, technology, adaptability, concentration, synergy and inclusion. As any paradigm, creative cities are challenged on many levels, in theory and in practice. Using culture and creativity as a resource and marketing value should be thoughtful, since it can have a significant impact on society. This paper will present some arguments about policies and critics of creative cities, as well as the required preconditions, organizational forms, their development path and relation to inclusion. This paper will present the case study of Savamala, as an example of urban regeneration through creating a cultural and creative quarter in Belgrade, and within a method of multicase study, include two more examples of cultural and creative strategies, the cases of Shanghai and Copenhagen, and by analyzing top-down and bottom-up initiatives, some conclusions about potentials and risks of those strategies will be drawn.
Urban shrinkage has existed since the founding of a city; however, its frequency in last decades has caused the creation of the internationally accepted concept of shrinking cities. The phenomenon can be identified by population decline due to the limitations in the restructuring of an industry-based economy. Urban shrinkage is especially observable in space by empty buildings and semi-abandoned urban quarters. Great impact on the concept formation has had the rapid increase of shrinking cities throughout Eastern Europe, from the onset of post-socialist transition in early 1990s and with extreme examples in East German cities. Although the concept is important at regional level, it has not gained any recognition in scientific and professional circles in Serbia. On the other side, the majority of Serbian cities had population loss for the first time by the Census in 2011. This was particularly visible in middle-size cities with economy dependent on industry. This affirms the research of six relatively similar middle-size cities in Vojvodina. The topic of research is housing. There is no consensus at international level relating its role. The most of scientists considers it as the consequence of shrinkage, but numerous examples confirm that housing shrinkage more depends on local factors. Hence, this research has double aim; to identify the way of local and regional adaptations of the concept thought the demonstration that housing possess a complex role in urban shrinkage, which can influence urban redevelopment. In accordance with this aim, two-step analysis of selected cities was conducted by the criteria derived from international and regional postulates of the concept. The final purpose of the research is practical – the creation of guidelines and recommendations for the adaption of planning in shrinking cities in Serbia, to overcome shrinking patterns...
Analyses of public spaces in Belgrade using geo-referenced twitter data
The ICT supported methodology for properly determine attractiveness of public spaces has
been an important tool in fields like urban planning, transport, marketing, business, migration
and tourism. The use of Twitter data is very interesting to make analysis of how people use
urban open spaces and what is the geographical pattern of their communications. Since the
Twitter is a massive platform for online communication within extremely diverse social groups,
with data generated by users of this network it is possible to research the spatiotemporal dynamics
of location and different aspects of users’ behaviour.
The paper concerns the study of user-generated twitter data that could support and improve the
understanding of spatial patterns for urban planning and (re)design of public spaces. The data
generated by Twitter social network are analysed, regarding temporal and spatial distribution,
content classification, language determination and sentiment analyses. The data based on
geo-referenced tweets collected in Belgrade, has been pre-processed, filtered and classified
by given criteria, by using “Twitter search engine” (TSE) web application based on Twitter

Territorial Planning as a Creative Tool for the Upgrading of Cultural Tourism
In the contemporary period of an abundance and diversity of offers in cultural tourism globally, the need for new values, such as creativity, has become unavoidable. As well as creativity being the essence of every cultural practice, it is also becoming a tool with which to link and modernize cultural treasures for tourist consumption today. Its inclusion is also useful in territorial plans, whose strategic role is a driving force for local economies. Creativity can support particularly those sectors that have rich foundations but that suffer from general underdevelopment. Cultural tourism in the town of Golubac and its surroundings in eastern Serbia is a prime example. Although Golubac is situated on the Danube and has one of the best preserved old fortresses in the region, it has not been identified as an important site of cultural tourism. The aim of this chapter is to describe recent efforts to facilitate this branch of tourism through the application of creative tools in local planning documents by means of a multi-criteria analysis of crucial territorial plans for Golubac. In establishing these criteria, the theoretical knowledge that links creativity, cultural tourism and territorial planning will be studied. Implementation of this interlinked knowledge in the analysis will provide the backbone to a proposal for improvements in territorial planning which can profoundly facilitate creativity in cultural tourism globally
Refurbishment of post-war prefabricated multifamily buildings
Several suburban settlements had been built in Belgrade after the World War II. In that time, a
few prefabricated systems were mostly in use in our country which resulted in housing settlements
consisting of numerous buildings with the same or similar layouts. They are all characterized
by poor energy performance causing high energy consumption (for heating and cooling)
and CO2 emissions. One of the examples of such architecture is the Konjarnikhousing settlement.
Different scenarios-hypothetical models for the energy performance improvement of the
envelope of the central block of the prefabricated multifamily building in Konjarnik are created.
The design of improvements of the envelope of the existing buildings is created according to
Belgrade’s climatic conditions, building orientation and technical characteristics of the building
structure. The assessment of the reduction in energy consumption for space heating and thus
the reduction of CO2 emissions has been carried out in the paper. Methodological approach
entails the following steps: creation of models of the improvement of existing buildings, consideration
of the results of thermodynamic simulations of energy performances of the modelsin
terms of energy consumption and CO2 emissions, and comparison of the results (models)
Negotiating National Prospects by Capturing the Medieval Past: Byzantium in Serbian Architectural History at the Turn of the 20th Century
The truism that the birth of the discipline of architectural history in Serbia was entwined with national emancipation and the construction of an authentic national identity is questioned by the position of the Byzantine cultural heritage in the Serbian architectural past. The germ of »national architecture« – conveniently identified with that of the Middle Ages – was an image of Serbian culture as part of the Byzantine that problematized the very idea of an original, authentic
Serbian identity. This paper will explore the question of the Serbian national narrative torn between a need for cultural authenticity and an imperial mission, and focus on the context in which this duality became a recognizable ideological agenda that justified Serbian political projects in an era when the Kingdom of Serbia was on the cusp of national, cultural and territorial expansion
Informal democracy in Patras, Greece: A mechanism for improved planning?
Greek spatial planning reality faces the problems like sprawl and illegal settlements outside the building zones, underpinned by the conventional self-financed real estate development model under the patronage of the national government. In case of transportation congestion problems, the formal planning proved to be even more ineffective and unpopular. Therefore, non-institutionalized supplement to formal planning is considered highly effective: informal planning relies upon the principles of collaborative dialogue, networks and trustful relationships among the relevant players. The article describes the informal planning procedure – the test planning method – analyzed against the theoretical background of communicative rationality, on the one hand, and critically assessed through the practical implementation in the case of Peloponnesian city of Patras on the other. As a result, the article highlights the successful phases of the test planning, nevertheless pointing to its shortcomings, which could be expected in the societies with a dominant political cronyism
Diagrammatics of Virtual Connectome: Architecture of Digital Memory Scaping [apstrakt]
Diagrammatic tracings and inscriptions of data and their processes of temporary clustering, consolidation, dissolution, and restructuring within the virtual space render an intricate documentary and creative complex data dynamics while generating a distinctive cyber-connectome. Bearing properties of a spatial entity—a field, a territory, or a scape—and having some kind of spatial relational or formal regularity (a kind of order—fixed or in constant transformation), it carries architectural logic and features by which we can describe its behaviour and current state. As a cognitive device and a thinking tool (the extension of our biological thinking mechanisms), or a thinking method and strategy (design intelligence strategy), it has been devised to facilitate (track and direct) research processes by interactively recording and networking information in an open-ended way. By visualising and mapping thought processing (the black box), it gives a synthetic form to the emergent memory-scape (parallel, coupled, extended, or augmented mind); it creates a digital archive as a dynamic mnemonic information field, landscape, or network, which enables complex web lines to connect singular entities in a dynamic setting based on quantum processing, connectivity, and decidability. Being the most convenient means of transfer and conversion from one medium into another, from one disciplinary or a thinking system into another, as well as maintaining subjects of this translation in-between—in an abstract relational state of multiple potential, affiliation, and activity, and a state of specific notation and coding—diagrammatics are here particularly developed and explained in relation to architectural strategies and instrumental frameworks of design investigation, invention, and documentality. Within the virtual scapes, they evolve digitally as tools, mediums, and collaborators, creating their own and shared theoretical discourses, methods, and aesthetics. https://www.strand.rs/2018/program.pd
