Virtual architecture – Subjective experience of virtual and real objects
The subjective experience of various objects is usually investigated on photographs of
objects, or in case of art, on artistic pictures, shown as digital photographs on a computer
screen. Even when research is done on architectural objects, such as various types of
buildings, as stimuli researchers usually use photographs of those objects. According to that,
we might ask, would our subjective experience of certain objects change if we observe it as a
real three-dimensional object or its two-dimensional projection on a photograph? In our
experiment 46 psychology students estimated their subjective experience of 10 objects shown
in four different presentations
Influece of open space on the quality of stay in healthcare facilities
The thesis deals with the research of open spaces within healthcare facilities, namely the analysis ofthe impact these spaces have on the quality of stay in healthcare complexes, for all categories ofusers. The initial problem that triggered the research is the marginalized status of these spaces inscience and in practice. The focus of this research is on the spatial characteristics of the quality ofresidence. Three proposed hypothesis claim that open spaces contribute to the quality of the stay inhealthcare facility by positively affecting both physical and mental well-being of users, and that thequality of the stay in healthcare facility depends on open spaces within. For the purpose of theresearch, a multiple case study method was selected including three facilities of secondary andtertiary health care, on the territory of Belgrade. The research process itself is conducted with acombination of theoretical and empirical approaches. The combination of quantitative andqualitative research methods was used, while the focus was on survey and interview methodology. The results of this particular research confirmed all the aforementioned hypotheses, pointed out theimportance of open spaces for healthcare users, and established relations between spatialcharacteristics of open space and quality of stay in healthcare facilities. The main contribution ofthis research is to expand knowledge in the field of health and open spaces, as well as urban design, landscape architecture and environmental psychology. The practical contribution of the paper is todevelop a set of design recommendations for open healthcare spaces in order to improve the overallquality of stay in health care complexes
Industrial Brownfields as Restorative Environments: the Possibility of Transformation and Reactivation of the Abandoned Industrial Heritage
Changes in the needs of modern society, as well as technical and technological developments, have led to an increase in the number of abandoned industrial buildings in cities, thereby disrupting existing urban areas. Although in recent decades the well-known practice of urban revitalization of abandoned industrial heritage buildings has been recognized as a successful method for urban revival, these types of properties in Serbia, although being the former symbols of prosperity and the power of the state, have been left to physical decay.
Restorative environments, unlike industrial heritage buildings, are designed to contribute to the health and well-being of people, especially by alleviating mental fatigue and stress, through the people's contact with nature. As restorative environments are predominantly tied to open spaces and natural settings, it is important to consider the possibility of applying this concept to indoor environments.
The aim of this paper is to research the possibility of applying the principles of restorative environments in the processes of transformation and reactivation of abandoned industrial heritage buildings, which have been placed under state protection as cultural monuments.
Through an extensive literature review, including different theoretical concepts and analysis of good practices, this paper examines the possibilities of transformation and reactivation of the abandoned industrial heritage on the territory of Belgrade such as Sugar Plant, the Milan Vapa’s Paper Mill and the Power and Thermal Power Station “Power and Light”, through the implementation of the concept of restorative environments.
The aim of this paper is to examine the possibility of transforming abandoned industrial heritage into healthy environments while adding cultural, social, and economic value. Application of this concept could lead to the formation of new potential for increasing public health within the urban tissue, as a new form of a public good, as well as to consider the possibility of wider use of restorative environments
Timber frame truss constructions in the LKV system
Projekat rekonstrukcije, adaptacije i enterijera penthausa [22. salon arhitekture, 2020]
BIG SEE Architecture Award 2020 - Office building ROAMING GROUP, Belgrade [award]
This office building represents the final phase in the process of reconstruction of the existing steel construction system skeleton – a twenty years old. Utilising a strategy of adaptation and rebuilding a new volume has been formed around existing structural system as a response to demands of contemporary business needs – multidisciplinary way of working. The building is designed as a string of five functionally independent floors with associated common areas – entrance area with designated contents at ground floor level and centrally positioned vertical core with lifts, sanitary areas and necessary services, as well as added parking area at the adjoining plot. Lighting elements that are both functional and decorative reveal an interesting experience providing an active re-modelling of the interior of the building in which changes in shadows and strong corporate colour identities alternate and are in contrast with anaemic colours of façade’s and interior finishes.
What makes this project one-of-a-kind?
The building adheres to simplicity presenting an almost straight cube with uniform materiality – a glass curtain wall highlighted with rhythmical openings. The only exception, driven by desire to avoid trend in manipulating recognizable elements and materials, is achieved with accentuated colonnade at the entrance level, therefore, creating an active relationship with the surrounding area and the users of the building.Architecture, BIG SEE Architecture Award 2020 - Winner, Public and commercial architecture, Serbia / https://bigsee.eu/office-building-roaming-group-belgrade/ ..........associates: Vanja Enbulajev, Miloš Obradović Dušan Radišić, Bratislav Milojević / Photography: Relja Ivani
Transferring COVID-19 Challenges into Learning Potentials: Online Workshops in Architectural Education
The paper addresses the shift in architectural education regarding the need to develop new
approaches in teaching methodology, improve curricula, and make advancements in new learning
arenas and digital environments. The research is based on the assumption that online workshops
could offer a unique learning experience for students in higher education. Accordingly, workshops
are considered an essential element in teaching emergency design. As a result, this can produce
broader and more innovative solutions to COVID-19 challenges regarding social distancing, limited
movements, regulated use of public space, and suspended daily activities. The theoretical notions
of emergency design and education for sustainable design enabled the identification of research
perspectives and spatial levels to be taken as a starting point of the workshop “COVID-19 Challenges:
Architecture of Pandemic” that was conducted by the University of Belgrade—Faculty of Architecture
in April 2020. The critical review of the workshop’s procedural and substantial aspects led to
identifying four main COVID-19 design challenges perceived in performance, innovation, alteration,
and inclusion. Additionally, the paper’s findings concern the identification of learning potentials
and limitations arising from a current topic affecting global society, for which neither solutions nor
adequate answers in the field of architecture and urbanism have been found
Integrating Sustainability in Higher Planning Education through International Cooperation: Assessment of a Pedagogical Model and Learning Outcomes from the Students’ Perspective
Purpose–This paper aims to supplement existing research on a joint approach to integrate sustainability
into higher planning education (HPE) by facilitating an international transformative learning process. It looks
at three different urban master’s programs in Serbia (Belgrade) and Germany (Berlin and Stuttgart).
Design/methodology/approach–In this paper, students’ assessments of the pedagogical model,
individual learning outcomes and the long-term value of the pedagogical model in respect of key competences
for sustainability are presented and discussed. Basic assumptions of the study include that assessment from
the students’perspective can provide feedback on the transformational learning experience with the aim of
improving the experience and thus learning outcomes; help identify limitations and target specific areas for
improvement in the pedagogical model; and improve the evaluation of effectiveness in developing knowledge
and skills for sustainability in HPE.
Findings–The paper provides evidence that a learner-centered and action-oriented approach, as well as a
global dialogue among peers from different backgrounds and nationalities, is an effective way to educate
future generations of urban planners to become“change agents”for societal transformation toward a more
sustainable future within their respective contexts.
Originality/value–The paper is a supplement to the existing research on educational initiatives that
attempts to integrate sustainability into the curricula, especially of urban-related programs; showcases outcomes of the pedagogical model(s) for sustainable development applied, especially when addressing the competences of students working in developing, transitional and developed countries or different geographic
contexts; and shows long-term learning outcomes after the students move into work practice
Multi-Criteria Model for the Selection of Construction Materials: An Approach Based on Fuzzy Logic
The process of construction and exploitation of a building passes through the preparation phase, the construction phase and the exploitation phase. Each of these phases involves the selection of criteria and decision making, with the aim of selecting the optimal construction materials for the building. The paper presents a new model for selecting construction materials that is based on fuzzy logic. In order to simulate the expert process of assessing the construction and exploitation of a building during which construction materials are selected, a modular fuzzy logic system was designed with a unique base of knowledge to assist in decision making on the priorities of the construction material. The model consists of four modules that are hierarchically organized on two levels. The size of the output from the model is the measure of a material’s priority. Each of the materials observed (straw, wood, brick and concrete-steel) is assigned a certain value for the criterion function, on the basis of which the user of the system chooses the material for construction. In addition to the structure of the model, the paper presents its testing. Testing was carried out on the case study of selecting materials for the construction of five residential buildings
