The load-bearing structure as visual stimulus: Complexity of the scene [abstract]

    No full text
This paper explores the role of load-bearing structures as visual stimuli within sustainability-oriented spatial design. As load-bearing systems are increasingly left exposed in sustainability-focused projects, their visual characteristics become an important component of the user experience. The study examines load-bearing structures across three levels of visual stimulation—presentational, representational, and symbolic—identifying key parameters that shape the visual complexity of a scene and discussing their potential impact on users’ perception, comfort, and wellbeing. The findings provide a basis for future research on how structural systems can be designed to evoke positive emotional responses

Competition for Conceptual Architectural Design of the Health Center in City Kvart in Podgorica [47th Salon of Architecture, 2025]

The proposed conceptual design for the Health Centre in City Kvart, Podgorica, reinterprets the conventional healthcare typology by introducing a landscaped inner courtyard as the primary spatial and experiential focus. Instead of the sterile and monolithic character typical of such facilities, the project establishes a calm exterior envelope that encloses a contrasting green core offering visual relief and acoustic protection from the urban context. Waiting areas and communal spaces are oriented toward this courtyard to encourage moments of pause, social interaction, and psychological comfort. A carefully selected palette of materials and textures reinforces warmth and tactility, while the integration of nature within the architectural composition supports restorative and therapeutic processes. The inner garden thus becomes not only a place of retreat, but a central component in shaping the sensory identity of the Health Centre

Potential of Digital Media for Public Space Vitality Thematisation [abstract]

    No full text
The presence of digital media in everyday life and the transfer of the public sphere from physical to virtual spaces impact how we plan and design public space. As places of urban vitality, public spaces become living laboratories for exploring how a choice of digital media can shift the resulting ambi- ence through different urban planning and design concepts. This research aims to promote the vitali- ty and resilience of traditional urban structures in the contemporary networking society. By evaluating media as integral elements of public space, based on their capacity to convey and transfer informa- tion, this research examines how they can become a core component of spatial thematisation. Four morphologically diverse spaces in Belgrade were analysed according to distinct criteria for effectively integrating digital media within physical urban space. The result of this research points out a variety of different links between digital media and urban space, enabling the interactive embodiment of planning and design concepts from child-friendly ludic cities in terms of adapting spatial information for entertainment and education purposes across creative cities and historic city, regarding the ability of digital media to carry social values in public spaces; all the way up to smart city and liveable city – in terms of utilising interactivity to cater the everyday needs of inhabitants

Evaluation of the Lifespan and Quality of Multi-Family Residential Buildings in Serbia: A Typological Perspective

    No full text
The lifespan of a residential building is a complex, multi-criteria process that can be evaluated through three key dimensions: physical, functional, and economic lifespan. A building’s lifespan is determined by the preservation of its physical integrity, functional utility, and economic viability. Several factors infl uence the durability of a building, spanning from design and construction to ongoing maintenance. These factors can be categorized into legal regulations, environmental infl uences, and human actions. This paper focuses on evaluating the condition of Serbia's multi-family residential stock through the lens of building lifespan and the quality of the housing stock. Serbia’s multi-family residential buildings vary signifi cantly in construction period, size, construction methods and materials, and spatial organization. To comprehensively understand this diversity, the study proposes a typological classifi cation of buildings that refl ects the specifi c characteristics of different construction periods. These typologies are structured based on parameters assessed during a life cycle evaluation. The paper presents and analyzes three primary types of multi-family residential buildings, along with several subtypes representing the broader spectrum of the residential stock. Based on established evaluation criteria, an assessment of the multi-family housing stock in Serbia is conducted, providing insights into the current state of these buildings and offering guidance for potential renovation strategies

Assessing gathering intensity in open public spaces: a study of Belgrade's urban fabric

    No full text
Open public space is a vital asset to democracy, as it fosters community strengthening by enabling gatherings and the exchange of ideas and values. It has been argued that the spatial characteristics of open public spaces significantly influence the formation of local community gathering places. By analyzing these spatial characteristics, it is possible to identify areas with inherent potential for gatherings, as well as the intensity of such potential. This study explores the nature and extent of gathering intensity in two distinct urban fabrics of Belgrade: traditional and modernist. Beyond analyzing the intensity, the research also examines how adaptable open public spaces are to the needs of local communities within these different urban contexts. The methodology employed in this study was validated as part of a doctoral dissertation in 2022. It draws upon various urban design theories developed by renowned scholars such as William H. Whyte, Christopher Alexander, Nan Ellin and Jan Gehl. The research was conducted within the elective course “Open Urban Spaces” at the University of Belgrade - Faculty of Architecture during the fall semester of the 2024/25 academic year. The primary goal of this research is to inspire the development of a tool or GIS-based application that enables planners and local communities to more easily assess gathering intensity in open public spaces. This would facilitate more effective planning and funding for the development of local community gathering places in the future

Location, Branding, Comfort: Analysis of Factors Affecting Real Estate Values of New Residential Developments in Belgrade [abstract]

    No full text
Many studies and market analyses emphasize the importance of location as a key factor in determining real estate prices. More attention is also being given to the impact of branding on property value, as developers increasingly use branding strategies across various aspects to remain competitive in the real estate market. However, the comfort and needs of modern real estate users have not been fully acknowledged as crucial factors. As cities evolve into interconnected urban networks, factors such as overall connectivity, efficiency, mobility, and the immediate availability of services and goods have become essential in choosing the place of living. Moreover, today's tenants have diverse and sophisticated expectations regarding the quality of urban life, including multifunctional spaces, maintenance, safety, greenery, and scenic views. New trends in urban living, lifestyle habits, and work demands have introduced additional elements that influence the appeal of real estate and, consequently, its value and price. This paper examines the impact of various factors on the values of new residential developments in Belgrade, Serbia, built in the 21st century. Multiple case studies offer a structured analysis of the factors affecting real estate prices, leading to a discussion on emerging trends and their relationship to traditional factors such as location and property condition. The research methodology includes an extensive literature review, market price analysis, and data collection through questionnaires distributed to residents of the selected case studies. Questionnaires aimed to identify and rank the factors that influence the appeal of the real estate units. The main findings of the research highlight the importance of the relevant factors and their ranking in determining residential real estate prices in Belgrade

The paper examines the proportional principles applied to the compositional design of the floor in the southern chancel of Milutin’s church at Hilandar. The aim of the paper is to demonstrate the establishment of relations between proportional logic and compositional structure, as manifested through geometric forms. Two floor slabs are selected and analyzed with regard to the use of various geometric shapes, including the square, circle, triangle, and octagon. The initial hypothesis posits that the application of these geometric shapes evokes a structural configuration grounded in the geometric regularity of square division. This assumption was confirmed through procedures of proportional analysis and geometric decomposition applied to both floor slabs. By means of proportional analysis, decomposition, and comparative analysis—identifying analogies and distinctions, it is concluded that the ornamental designs on the floor tiles forming the two slabs exhibit complete geometric regularity and harmonic balance, indicating the exceptional craftsmanship of the period’s builders and a confluence of diverse influences and skills
