In a world where globalization is on the rise, the importance of unique place branding strate- gies in urban development is greater than ever. This challenge is even more evident in multi- ethnic and multicultural spaces located on the borders of regions and countries. In regard to that, the planning and urban design need to provide answers concerning intervention in the form of nodes (individual monuments) and networks (spatial, functional and informational). The intention of this research is to show the possibility of improving the perceived value of the cultural, architectural and built-in heritage through the educational project, in particular through branding strategy simulation for redefining the urban landscape of the Old Bazaar in Novi Pazar. The study presents measures to encourage the development of local indu- stry, preservation of tangible and intangible heritage, use and improvement of the existing resources and urban structure. In addition, the research aims to show the creative ways in which trade, as the dominant economic sector of Novi Pazar, but also a part of tradition, can become part of a new complex structure and main value of a new concept of place branding. The research is based on the innovative methods and approaches of planning interventions with a purpose of better connecting local residents with tourists, but also redefining the visual urban landscape as the main elements in the process of city branding

Unlike the Museum's architecture, which dominates the border between green (the park) and blue (the sky), the designed pavilion feels like an unobtrusive curved floating line, like a hinterland that only emphasizes the weight of the white crystal with its own immediate surroundings. Contrary to the monumentality and weight with which the Museum participates in the landscape of the city on a macro level, the newly designed pavilion aims to become an instrument of communication of the Museum with the immediate park environment, on a micro scale

The modernisation of cities could happen in different ways and at different levels, but development could not happen without energy, and sustainable development could not happen without sustainable energy (Holliday & Yumkella, n.d.). Using the energy that comes from the sun is one of the earliest energy usages. However, modern solar systems offer the possibility of using solar energy in a wide area of urban and rural activities. Although present in every corner of the world (Kumar et al., 2016), solar energy usage is still under examination and constant technical improvement (El-Faouri et al., 2016). Replacement of standard street lights with solar ones equipped with LED (Light Emitting Diode) lighting represents not only a technical improvement but also a significant energy savings step (Alkholidi & Hamam, 2019), (Miskovic, 2013). Solar street lights are more expensive than standard ones but combined with the LED technology, and they are more economical in terms of energy consumption, reparation needs and maintenance (Spahiu et al., 2018). In this study, we examine the modernisation of cityscapes of three Balkan cities – Cetinje (Montenegro), Tirana (Albania) and Belgrade (Serbia), through the introduction of photovoltaic (PV) street lighting. After giving the basic information on solar street lights, we present the solar street light systems in three Balkan cities and discuss these applications

Assessing public open spaces in Belgrade – A quality of urban life perspective

    No full text
Purpose This paper interrogates the impact of spatial transformations on urban life. It explores the level of individual and group satisfaction and sense of well-being within the urban public realm; this is undertaken by reporting on the outcomes of an assessment study of three key public open spaces in Belgrade, developed from a quality of urban life (QoUL) perspective. Design/methodology/approach A systematic multilevel assessment method is utilised, with the aim of determining the material and immaterial elements that can contribute to an individual's sense of comfort within a public space. The study places emphasis on the functional, social and perceptual attributes as they relate to the physical characteristics of three assessed spaces. Findings The assessment study resulted in a systematic overview of the different attributes of the three assessed spaces. With various performance levels within each set of attributes, the study identifies key challenges and problems that could lead towards determining possible opportunities for future local urban interventions and developmental actions. Originality/value With the shifts in policies and the associated governance process that redefined the outlook of previously enforced development and urban growth in the last two decades, the capital of Serbia, Belgrade, has undergone significant spatial changes. This has resulted in a certain level of fragmentation in the urban fabric, leading to a number of challenges concerning public health, well-being, safety, accessibility, comfort and urban mobility, to name a few, that need to be better addressed and understood within the local context

SAJ : Serbian architectural journal [New spatial grammar]

    No full text
Spatial grammar is usually understood as a reference by means of which designing in architecture can be analyzed, understood and specified in semantic, pragmatic, epistemic, programmatic or other logical ways. Also, it can be associated with a given set of rules within some formal language of architecture. Though one is true; designing architecture is always an act of creative discovery, permanently tending to formalize itself to be widely accepted. New Spatial Grammar opens a fresh way to understanding different perspectives of engaging the place of architecture including all ambiguity and fluidity of the design process. It offers a unique set of architectural strategies and presents a prospect of possible changes in the perception of space..
