Implementing a Blended Design Studio Model in Architectural Engineering Education

    No full text
This paper reports an exploratory case study on applying a blended learning environment in a studio course that introduces students to the challenges of designing spatial structures at the master studies of architectural engineering. In response to current technological advancements, changing generation, and demands of architectural practice, a model that blends conventional learning methods with online features was used to expand the design studio’s activities and foster communication, collaboration, and connectivity. Furthermore, this approach promoted the implementation of the studio curriculum that interactively combines analytical and systematic procedures with explorative design exercises, seminars, workshops, literature studies and organized reflection, computer program demonstrations, physical model studies, generative design explorations, fabrication of small-scale prototypes, and design presentation. The effects of redesigned studio layout were evaluated based on data collected from the learning management system and the surveys conducted at the beginning and the end of the course. Obtained information and produced design artifacts demonstrate that blended studio assisted students in developing in-depth content knowledge, critical thinking, creativity, and skills by working in a stimulative, interactive and inclusive environment that better meets a new generation of design students’ needs

Sound Drawing [43.

And yet it moves – On liminal drawing issuesје поставила као кусткиња архитекта Анђелка Бнин-Бнински.

In current time, as a society, we face multiple challenges and dualities: enable growth yet prevent disruption of the existing urban structure, give a response to the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs, preserve the unique architectural and urban heritage that testifies about our past yet innovate within the architectural and urban design for our present

The Old Core of Zemun - Detailed regulation plan for the Old core of Zemun (OCZ DR Plan)

    Get PDF
The last decade of the 20th century witnessed a general decay of the Old Core of Zemun. Unplanned structures of inappropriate architectural and building quality occurred within the area of exceptional architectural, cultural and historical value, threatening to obliterate its heritage value. Besides that, degradation of public spaces and their inappropriate use, as well as the neglect and devastation of protected buildings and structures, additionally lowered its heritage quality. Another problem was a fragmented treatment of the segments that form the Old core, in previous urban plans. Therefore, the purpose of the OCZ DR Plan was to form the basis for the integrated and sustainable development, use and conservation of The Old Core area

Report Serbia: Influence of national policies on the Sustainability of Heritage from the architectural and urban design perspective

    Get PDF
When discussing urban policies that tackle the question of sustainability in relation to urban heritage, it is crucial to highlight identified duality. On the one hand - Serbia follows the contemporary paradigms and perspectives concerning sustainability in planning and urban development, as evidenced by the publication of specific strategic documents, planning laws, and chapters in planning documents. On the other hand, laws in the heritage domain are often obsolete, since the current Law dates from 1995 with a minimal change adopted in 2011. Consequently, in recent years, efforts have been made to identify various problematic segments of this law that partially disable the sustainability of heritage but also neglects specific types of heritage. These endeavours can be followed in the draft documents produced in the sector of culture and specifically by departments related to the heritage, which have not yet been adopted

Soft Power Architecture: Establishing an Interdisciplinary Methodological Approach for the Research of Embassy Buildings

    Get PDF
Architecture can be viewed as a system of circumstance structuring that does not exist independently from the contextual occurrences. It captures, constructs and legitimizes oftentimes conflicting societal realities and ideologies. One of these aspects is observable within the concept of soft power, defined as the capability to attract and persuade without coercion and payments. Additionally, soft power resources are the assets that produce such attraction but cannot always be measured or have tangible physical manifestations. What happens when soft power does have spatial manifestations? Soft power architecture is positioned as an amalgamation of processes and outcomes that must be examined and explained as an indissoluble structure. This paper focuses on establishing an interdisciplinary methodological approach through mapping and classification of the state sponsored (re)production processes for spaces aimed at the communication of the officially sanctioned images/messages of national identity. Placement of ideological narrative-building processes or lack thereof, for embassy buildings is observed as the representative model for this research. The findings dispute the presupposed discrepancies between the proclaimed values, implementation strategies and examined spatial manifestations. Embassy architecture, with its privileges and realization process, vary significantly depending on the interpretation of ideological narrative-building. The relevancy of architectural design is of secondary importance, while the examined conceptualization and management processes are more indicative of spatial (re)production and freedom and control in urban spaces. Apart from providing an applicable methodology and method for examining soft power architecture, this research offers relevant data primarily for architects and urban planners, putting forward strategies for communication of identity for exported architectural typologies. Furthermore, the universality of these typologies allows their spatial consequences to be examined in various urban matrices and cross-referenced with points of interest for individual case studies

The Effects of Open Space on Reducing Workplace Stress: Case Study of Business Park in the Post-Socialist Urban Setting

    Get PDF
Working people spend around 54% of their waking hours at a workplace, according to recent statistics. Work-related stress is unavoidable, and it can damage the health of employees and affect business performance. In this paper, we argue that open space inside the workplace environment can have a positive influence on reducing overall stress levels in all the categories of users. To our knowledge, there is a significant lack of research considering specific business districts and the gated complexes called business parks, especially in post-socialist Eastern European cities, where there they are still a novelty. Empirical research in this study is on the single case study of Business Park “Airport city” in Belgrade, Serbia. Its main focus is on the survey conducted with 235 participants based on a questionnaire, which examines the relation between workplace stress and workplace environments. The findings from the questionnaire show that the frequency, duration, and activity of open space usage influence the stress levels of employees in this specific workplace, while it is not visible relating to their age and gender. Additionally, final implications suggest that improved open space, such as well-expected greenery, but also the urban design non-associative to workspace and the socialization and exercise amenities customized for frequent and short work breaks, can facilitate the overall well-being of employees. They are innovative elements in relatively underdeveloped research on stress measures with open space usage characteristics in the specific (gated) workplace setting

Methodology for Residential Building Stock Refurbishment Planning—Development of Local Building Typologies

    Get PDF
This paper presents the methodology for the implementation of building typology principles as a tool for the strategic planning of residential building stock energy retrofits on a municipal level in Serbia. Research was conducted under the IEE EPISCOPE (Intelligent Energy Europe EPISCOPE/ TABULA project) project with the aim of developing an adequate tool for creating building stock energy retrofit management strategies on a local level. An approach that envisions the diversity and uneven spatial distribution of building stock in smaller scale municipalities and includes statistically relevant sampling of all relevant building types was developed and tested in the pilot project that focused on the city of Vršac. Two options for local typology development were formulated: a top-down approach, which relies on the data from the national typology or other available databases by reducing them to the local level, and a bottom-up approach, which represents a new data gathering and processing method. Both approaches were tested in the pilot project and the results are compared in this paper. From the conclusions of these analyses, a common methodology for the development of local building typologies has been defined. It can be used in the strategic planning of building stock, whether for the purpose of developing local energy action plans (LEAPs) or other purposes internationally
