Towards More Resilient City: Improving Public Health by Increasing the Usage of Urban Green Open Space - a Case Study of New Belgrade
The modern lifestyle has generated major stress-related issues that are seriously affecting public health in cities. Alongside the current pandemia treats, public health became one of the crucial elements of city resilience. The usage of open green space in urban, residential areas can be beneficial for citizens' overall physical and psychological health and well-being. Although there is a trend of improving green infrastructure and usage in post-socialist housing districts, there are different types and patterns of open space usage. This paper aims to identify these differences in order to provide innovative suggestions for increasing the use of open green space in residential areas. The methodology was consisted out of theoretical and observational techniques, including a survey of 120 participants. New Belgarde was selected as a case study, with a comparation analysis done on two distinctive open green spaces in this area, combining expert observation and semi-structured interviews. Results provided essential insights into connections between spatial characteristics, user satisfaction, and usage regarding open green space in New Belgrade. Thus, this paper could present a knowledge base for developing guidelines on improving the urban design of different open public spaces that could empower their usage and, therefore, influence citizens' healthier lifestyles in residential neighborhoods
The Influence of Water/Binder Ratio on the Mechanical Properties of Lime-Based Mortars with White Portland Cement
Protecting the built cultural heritage is one of the most important tasks in architectural
practice. The process of repair is time-consuming, weather-dependent, and sensitive to materials
applied. Introducing new materials in historic building repair in order to decrease the time needed
for repair, brings some risk in the preservation process. The most common material for masonry
repair is lime mortar. Adding cement to lime mortar can improve the mechanical properties of mortar and speed up the repair process. The high amount of cement may increase the strength, but decrease ductility and permeability of mortar, causing damages to protected buildings. An increase in strength with the smallest amounts of cement demands optimization of water content in the mixture. Tests were performed to investigate the influence of the water/binder (w/b = water/(lime + cement) ratio on mortar strength and water permeability. An air-entraining agent (AEG) was introduced to improve permeability. Results confirmed that adding small amounts of cement to lime (20% by weight) and decreasing of w/b ratio, improves the strength, with almost negligible influence on water permeability. The addition of very small amounts of AEG did not decrease the strength, nor the permeability
DG Apartment – Reconstruction [BAB 2021]
This is a reconstruction and adaptation project of the penthouse in Vracar, Belgrade, with total interior design and custom-made furniture and lighting.
The reconstruction project of the space included the opening of a plan with the idea of creating the fluidity of the inner space, which overflows with the effects of the view of Belgrade, from the Temple of St. Sava to the Bridge to Ada and New Belgrade. The view from the living room area on the Temple and the roofs of Vracar is accentuated by glass openings that extend over the entire surface of the wall.
A special challenge in the project was the revitalization and stripping of the Avramenko ribbed ceiling in order to give the entire space of the penthouse additional openness, height and attractiveness. The ceiling is additionally accentuated by black-and-white-copper custom lighting.
The main design concept in the interior was the black-and-white elegance with copper accents and details. All furniture elements are custom-made in the same black-and-white-copper palette.
The idea of fluidity and flows of the whole space, apart from the structure, was also realized by materialization - reflection in space, usage of glass, mirrors, continuity of granite white floor with black patterns and simple light treatment of walls.
The central part of the apartment is an open plan kitchen, dining area and living room that visually forms a unique whole. The theme of black and white elegance, through a minimalist approach in the design and decor of the central part, spills over to the main bathroom, as well as to the night zone and the second bathroom belonging to it. The kitchen part is accentuated by a black cubic motif of the work zone in glass and kerock surfaces, which is located in the middle of the white elements in which the kitchen appliances are hidden. The high black table, with a copper construction has a surface made of kerock, designed to be an additional work surface in the kitchen, a half-bar, or a dining table for 6 people, depending on the needs and in accordance to the contemporary living everydayness
Adaptive reuse
Adaptive Reuse is defined as the process of adapting an object to a new function while retaining its authentic architectural characteristics and values. The process seeks to preserve the existing physical structure as much as possible, to preserve the historical value of the heritage, leaving the possibility for repair refurbishment and adding of the necessary elements. This reduces the consumption of building materials, resources, and energy for new construction. On the other hand, the adaptation to the new purpose enables the active life of the building in contemporary conditions, which is the best prevention of active preservation, protection from decay and devastation. To adequately protect the heritage, the procedure requires an expert assessment of the historic value of heritage, suitability of the building for adaptive conversion, a possible adaptation of the building to a new role, and possible functions that correspond to the existing architectural characteristics of the building. In the contemporary practice of urban development, this procedure is considered an effective way to reduce the spread of urban areas and environmental impact by adequate use of existing space
