    Complementary: Green catalysis over red soil for pollutant removal

    Organic dyes from industrial wastewater pollute water tables. Here proposed solution for environmental control relies on pristine red soil for adsorption and oxidative degradation of methylene blue. Soil analysis comprised XRD, spectroscopic (FTIR and Raman) and microscopic (SEM/EDS) techniques, while spectrophotometry was applied for dye quantification. The dominant soil mineral is kaolinite while Fe homogeneous distribution is witnessed in the α- and γ-FeO(OH) form. Dye adsorption was monitored for both soil and kaolinite, with rising removal under basic conditions due to methylene blue transformation. Theoretical modelling enabled insight into dye orientation over goethite crystallographic planes and estimation of binding energy. Soil/Fenton reagent achieved a substantial 93 % dye removal. An optimal oxidant concentration in the Fenton system was 10 mM. We confirmed the excellent performance of pristine red soil samples as naturally occurring adsorbents and catalysts in Fenton oxidation of environmental pollutants

    Objectives: Gestational hypertension (GH) is one of the most common pregnancy-related complications, however, there is still insufficient knowledge about its development and molecular changes. The aim of our study was to examine the expression of miR-17, miR-29a and miR-181a, as well as TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6 and IL-17 in women with GH and to investigate possible correlations between these parameters. Study design: The study included 64 pregnant women, placed either in the control or the GH group. Quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) was used to determine expression levels of microRNAs and cytokines’ mRNAs. Main outcome measures: Expression levels of miRNAs (miR-17, miR-29a and miR-181a) and proinflammatory cytokines mRNAs (TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6 and IL-17) in women with gestational hypertension were compared to the control group (healthy pregnant women). Results: No significant changes in microRNAs expression level were found between compared groups. TNF-α was significantly upregulated in the GH group compared to controls. Expression levels of other investigated cytokines did not differ between examined groups. ROC curve analysis indicated that TNF-α does not show sufficient ability to discriminate between CG and GH patients. TNF-α was significantly positively correlated with IL-1β and IL-17 and negatively correlated with miR-181a. Conclusions: Our results point to the involvement of proinflamatory cytokines in gestational hypertension. Although increased expression of TNF-α was found in the GH group, this cytokine did not show sufficient ability to discriminate between GH and healthy pregnancies

    Development and Evaluation of the Reliability of a Semi-Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire to Assess the Intake in the Serbian Population

    Assessing dietary habits with validated questionnaires is crucial for achieving reliable results in health research. The aim of this study was the development and validation of a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) in an 18–30-year-old Serbian population. A total of 93 participants completed the FFQ and three 24 h dietary recalls (24 hR). Pearson and intraclass correlations between FFQ and 24 hR intakes were assessed and were de-attenuated and energy-adjusted. Bland–Altman plots were generated, and quintiles of energy, water, fiber, and macronutrient intake were analyzed with contingency tables. Adjustments for sex differences were included. The validity of the FFQ varied, with significant correlations for energy, carbohydrates, cholesterol, and vitamin B12, vitamin C and vitamin D. Misclassification rates were generally low. Bland–Altman plots indicated good agreement between methods. It can be concluded that the validated FFQ is a promising tool for dietary assessment in the Serbian population. Results for several nutrients align closely with previous studies. The new FFQ is a useful tool for dietary assessment in the Serbian population

    Endocrine disruptors in e-waste dismantling dust: In silico prediction of mixture-induced reproductive toxicity mechanisms

    The constant exposure of humans to a mixture of low doses of toxic substances, emerging from the daily emission of toxic dust containing various metals and organic compounds in electrical and electronic waste (e-waste) recycling areas, poses potential harmful effects on health and the environment. While individually recognized as endocrine disruptors affecting hormonal balance, the combined impact of these toxic substances in a mixture remains insufficiently explored, particularly in relation to reproductive health. Thus, the aim of this in silico analysis was to: (i) assess the relationship between the exposure to a mixture of DBDE, DBDPE, TBBPA, Pb, Cd and Ni and development of male and female reproductive system disorders; and (ii) demonstrate the ability of in silico toxicogenomic tools in revealing the potential molecular mechanisms involved in the mixture toxicity. As the main data-mining tool, Comparative Toxicogenomics Database (CTD) was used, along with the ToppGene Suite portal and GeneMANIA online server. Our analysis identified 5 genes common to all the investigated substances and linked to reproductive system disorders. Notably, the most prominent interactions among these genes were physical interactions (77.64 %). Pathway enrichment analysis identified oxidative stress response as the central disrupted molecular pathway linked to reproductive pathology in the investigated mixture, while our chemical-phenotype CTD analysis uncovered additional affected pathways – apoptosis, hormonal regulation, and developmental functions. These findings highlight an increased risk of reproductive system disorders associated with the exposure to the investigated mixture of toxic substances in electronic waste recycling areas, emphasizing the urgent need for attention to address this environmental health concern. Hence, future laboratory studies should prioritize investigating the specific genes and common mechanisms identified in this study

    Abstract Flavonoids, as plant-derived compounds, were essential active components in traditional medicine for centuries. Their potential or confirmed effects include antiviral, antimutagenic, antiinflammatory, antibacterial, vasodilatory, and anticancer properties. The promotion of a plantbased diet, along with the benefits of consuming flavonoids, has recently become increasingly attractive. 3-Hydroxyflavone (3HF) is the structural spine of flavonols, an important subgroup of flavonoids. Although 3HF itself does not exist in plants per se, it exerts many of its effects because of its characteristics that allow it to prevent free radical generation. This work is focused on the characterization of 3HF complexes with zinc(II) and aluminium(III) ions (Zn-3HF and Al-3HF, respectively). Besides this, a simple, fast, and low-priced spectrophotometric method for 3HF determination, with very low LOD and LOQ, based on Zn-3HF and Al-3HF formation, was established. A slight advantage is given to the modification with Al3+ ion on pH 4.91, due to very low LOD and LOQ values of 1.83×10-7 molL-1 , and 5.50×10-7 molL-1 , respectively, and a high correlation coefficient, R =0.99986. Furthermore, the antioxidant ability of Zn-3HF, Al-3HF, and parent 3HF was examined by the ABTS and DPPH tests. They brought the Zn-3HF complex to the fore as a potential antioxidative agent.Flavonoidi, jedinjenja biljnog porekla, vekovima su bili veoma važne aktivne komponente u tradicionalnoj medicini. Veliki broj njihovih potencijalnih ili već potvrđenih efekata uključuje antivirusna, antimutagena, antiinflamatorna, antibakterijska, vazodilatatorna i antikancerogena svojstva. Promovisanje biljne ishrane, uz isticanje koristi konzumiranja flavonoida, u današnje vreme postalo je sve privlačnije. 3-Hidroksiflavon (3HF) je strukturni stub svih flavonola, važne klase flavonoida. Iako sam 3HF ne postoji u biljkama per se, on ispoljava mnoge svoje efekte zahvaljujući osobini da sprečava stvaranja slobodnih radikala. Ovaj rad je fokusiran na karakterizaciju kompleksa 3HF sa jonima cinka(II) i aluminijuma(III) (Zn-3HF i Al-3HF, respektivno). Izvršena je karakterizacija ovih kompleksa i razvijena brza i pristupačna metoda za spektrofotometrijsko određivanje 3HF, na osnovu formiranja kompleksa Zn-3HF i Al-3HF, sa veoma niskim vrednostima LOD i LOQ. Mala prednost je data modifikaciji sa Al3+ na pH 4,91 zbog izuzetno niskih vrednosti LOD i LOQ, 1,83×10-7 mol L-1 , odnosno 5,50×10-7 mol L-1 , kao i visokog koeficijenta korelacije, R=0,99986. Pored toga, antioksidativni kapaciteti sintetizovanih kompleksa Zn-3HF i Al-3HF, kao i samog 3HF, ispitani su DPPH i ABTS testovima i doveli su Zn-3HF kompleks u prvi plan za dalja ispitivanja kao potencijalnog antioksidativnog agensa

    In situ Raman spectroscopy study of the oxidative polymerization of aniline in media of different acidity

    In situ Raman spectroscopy was used for the first time to study the reaction intermediates/products of the oxidative polymerization of aniline to polyaniline (PANI) with peroxydisulfate in aqueous solutions of different initial acidity. Raman spectra were recorded for the drops of reaction mixture taken at various reaction times. Five reaction systems with different pH of the monomer solution (pHmon), leading to 1-D nanostructured PANIs (pHmon =5.8, 4.6 and 4.5) and granular PANIs (pHmon= 3.4 and 1.0) were explored. Spectral characteristics of different reaction phases - athermal, exothermic and post-propagation were identified and correlated with the proposed mechanisms of aniline polymerization and nanostructures formation. For the nanostructured PANIs, the athermal phase was characterized by pronounced strengthening of the δ(N H)/ν(C––N)Q band at 1510–1520 cm 1, while the characteristic of the second exothermic phase was the strengthening of the ν(C~C)B/ ν(C~C)Phz band at c.a. 1636 cm 1 which becomes stronger than the ν(C––C)Q/ν(C~C)SQ band at c.a. 1590 cm–1. For granular PANIs, the band at 1590 cm–1 was stronger than that at 1630 cm–1 for all reaction phases. For all reaction systems, characteristic feature of the post-propagation phase was strengthening of the ν(C~N+•) band at 1330–1340 cm 1 due to delocalized polarons. For granular PANIs, the band associated with phenazine-like units at c.a. 1415 cm 1 disappeared after the exothermic phase, while for nanostructured PANIs it was seen until the end of the reaction. The obtained results are expected to be useful in further investigations of the intermediates/ products and mechanisms of polymerizations of other aromatic amines
