Green Romanic Tradition and Ecocriticism
Since the 1990s, Romantic nature poetry in all its forms and genres—lyric, narrative, sonnet, ode, loco-descriptive, conversational, and contemplative--has been hailed as a good example of the Romantic poets’ ecological awareness against the backdrop of the 18th century industrial revolution and environmental pollution. Famous for its spontaneous love and expression of the beauty of nature in all its aspects—peaceful or turbulent, “lakish” or oceanic— Romantic nature poetry not only imparts deep meaning to human life but also makes one read deeply into the biological and environmental life of land and nature on earth
PowerQuest: Scaffolding the Lebanese EFL University Students’ Writing in a Public Speaking Class
Many university undergraduates consider writing assignments an overwhelming requirement. Traditional instructions rarely provide students with clear directions of how to use the Internet to search for authentic material and complete a task. The aim of this study was to scaffold the competence of EFL university students in writing an informative speech assignment through a Web Inquiry tool, the PowerQuest, in a Public Speaking class. An experimental study was carried at a Lebanese English medium private university. The participants (N=62), Lebanese undergraduates, were assigned into experimental and control groups randomly. The experimental group performed informative speech writing assignments through PowerQuest, whereas the control group followed the traditional way. The theoretical framework for using PowerQuest was the cognitive and constructivist theories. Data collection instruments were scores of pre/post-intervention essays, Likert scale, open-ended questions, and thematic analysis of the post-intervention essays. Data were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. Integration of PowerQuest tool made the experimental group engage into higher order thinking skills in a self-instructional, collaborative, motivating, technology-rich environment; they made use of up-to-date and authentic material through reliable domains and met deadlines. They outperformed the control group significantly and reflected a positive perception of the experience. Suggestions and recommendations for further research were shared
Landscape as a Chaotic Representation of European Influence in Aimé Cesaire’s Notebook of a Return to a Native Lan
Landscape is used as a tool to bring to the fore the reverberations of the past and is employed as a vehicle for cultural interrogation and native evaluation. What is imperative in the analysis of Caribbean poetry, is the heightened attention that is placed on the natural landscape of the islands. This paper discusses how landscape is manipulated and presented as the frame for the search for identity which the speaker in Notebook of a Return to a Native Land grapples with. Cesaire, or more specifically, the speaker, uses landscape both metaphorically and literally to evaluate and define identity. Studying the complexities of Landscape is not a new feat with regards to A Notebook of a Return to a Native Land, however this paper takes it a step further as to situate landscape as the binding force of all other branches of thought that the speaker presents in the poem
Morphophonemic Variations in the Saraiki Language
The current study explains the morphophonemic variation in Saraiki language. The complete phenomenon is described through the analysis of Saraiki phonology and morphology. The data has been collected from the daily speech of Saraiki speakers and from the comparative dictionary of Indo-Aryan languages and is analysed through morpheme-based theory. The study explains how irregularity occurs in the formation of Saraiki words and exposes its morphophonemic structure as well. The study describes how this morphophonemic process works differently with different type of roots. The behaviour of same suffix varies with the variation of a root. The structure of suffix changes in different conditions when root is coda less, having coda, roots ending with /s/ and having /ɦ/ coda. The current study also elaborates the process of changing noun into verb and vice versa
Archetypal Heroes of The Epic of Kings and The Epic of Gilgamesh: Rostam and Gilgamesh are Mirroring Myths
The Epic of Gilgamesh is one of the earliest works of an ancient Mesopotamian civilization that its protagonist, Gilgamesh in many aspects is comparable with Rostam, the protagonist of Iranian mythology, and Shahnameh which is known as The Book of Kings written by Ferdowsī. Comparing both characters, we encounter loads of similarities that can be considered as archetypes that are untrained tendency to experience things in a certain way and contain images and phenomena from their ancestors. The similarities in both epic heroes show that the heroic mythology—though very different in detail—have explicitly common structural and infrastructural analogies. Although archetypal heroes are different in details, the more they are recognized, the more their structural and infrastructural similarities come to light. They all follow a global pattern that suggests the existence of examples in the collective subconscious mind of two authors. The human mind digests events of the world, imagines, and interprets the myths as the mystery. Thus, the ability to arouse humankind against the phenomena is the beginning of humanity’s attempt to learn myths
Chile-U.S.A.: A Case Study of Telecollaboration
Telecollaboration has emerged as an effective way to promote language competency and intercultural communication. The intention of this study is to contribute to the current investigation in the field of computer-mediated communication by examining if the use of telecollaboration can lead to significant gain in L2 proficiency in novice-level learners and in what ways. The aim of this study is to analyze students’ perception of the telecollaboration experience, its implication of students’ motivation, and if significant improvement in language proficiency among novice-level learners exist and can be measured. In the attempt to study the effect of telecollaborative exchange projects in the field of foreign language acquisition, a 7‐week virtual collaboration was conducted between an Elementary Spanish 1 college class in the United States and an Elementary to Intermediate English university class in Chile. The telecollaboration consisted of eight videoconferences and the creation of a website between the partners. A similar group of Elementary Spanish 1 students was involved in the experimental study as the control group. Using qualitative and quantitative data collection this paper examines whether or not the participation in the telecollaborative partnership resulted in language gain and a positive interest in learning about the target culture. Students’ interests and feedback were analyzed by the researchers and authors of this article. The results showed an increased level of language skills as well as a change in motivation and intercultural awareness
Health Information Technology Media by Nurses in Patient Care
Health Information Technology (HIT) is an electronic application of patient management system in health services that yield data for enhanced patient care. This literature review article examined the ability of nurses using HIT. Nurses being the highest proportion of population in the health sector, examining the extent of HIT use from nurses, will provide a clarified outlook on the implications of HIT. Evidential literature search was done in Pubmed, Google Scholar and Science Direct and collectively it yielded 1801 articles. The articles was carefully skimmed for applicability and relevancy. The deemed inclusion criteria was met by eleven articles and it was entirely reviewed and sorted. The findings revealed that for the HIT system to be successful, from the conceptualisation of HIT, to its planning, to designing, to the application of HIT and also at the feedback stage all the members involved and affected by HIT and its implications must be consulted, especially nurses being the major number of health workers in the health care realm, its crucial that nurses are involved in every stage of HIT management and its execution. Application of HIT was found to improve skill of nurse in informatics and electronic documentation. It was found that issues like medication errors, missing-out of service by the patients were reduced. Good standard of practice was also evident by continuation of care, and reaching the unreached remote marginalised communities was the best of all HIT’s benefit
Shift of Politeness Strategy made by The Indonesian Caregivers in Japan
This article adresses the shift of politeness strategy made by the Indonesian caregivers in Japan. This current study focuses on two things; they are the strategy of politeness chosen and the shift of politeness strategy made by the Indonesian caregivers. The Indonesian caregivers used as the subjects of the study totaled 68. They were employed at eight homes for the elderly where the elderly people they served stayed, located in Osaka, Toyohashi, and Yokohama Japan. The data in the form of conversational text which was gathered in natural setting when the caregivers interact with the elderly people. The result shows that the Indonesian caregivers used more than one politeness strategy in the process of communication between them and the elderly people. They used both the negative and positive politeness strategies. Even in one event of communication, they alternated the two strategies, indicating that the context of situation in which one utterance was made caused them to shift from one strategy of politeness to another. Gendered Space in Chinua Achebe’s Anthills of the Savannah
This article provides a critical overview of the treatment of the question of gender in Chinua Achebe’s Anthills of the Savannah. In other words, it probes the implication of women in postcolonial Nigeria, with regard to how their political marginalization constricts the public sphere in Nigeria. It matters to note that the feminist movement eventually contributes to strengthen and consolidate the ideals of democracy and good governance in the country. Yet, the low participation of women in government and politics is due to the gendered political system which is dominantly patriarchal. Thus, claiming for their integration in the political process, women should stand together in order to voice up their aspirations
