Constraints on Developing Digital Literacy Skills in Higher Education
The term ‘literacy' has been traditionally associated with the ability to use the skills of reading and writing. Nowadays and with the progress of technology, this term has been broadened to refer to other skills and abilities. One of these is digital literacy, which is no longer restricted to the ability to handle computers. It encompasses several skills that teachers and students should master so that effective learning/teaching can take place. Not only does the importance of digital literacy lie in providing and making information more accessible, but it does mainly aim at respecting the tendencies of young learners. A student/ teacher who has not strengthened his/her digital competence will inevitably struggle to succeed in an increasingly digital world. Hence, it should be part and parcel of the curriculum since it contributes to lifelong learning and is a highly required competence for employment. This article is a review of the literature on the beneficial impact of digital literacy and its associated learning outcomes in higher education. It addresses the following questions: What does digital literacy, a powerful technological tool, add to the teaching-learning process in higher education? And what are the obstacles that are likely to hinder the implementation of different digital-related skills
Receiving Media Discourse Translation
The objective of this paper is to highlight how one translation of a media discourse can affect people’s thoughts and attitudes. One media discourse can be translated in different ways carrying different ideologies and messages, serving the translator’s objectives for which the translation receiver constitutes, in most of times, a main target to manipulate. Nowadays, the translation receiver is subject to various studies that are undertaken for the purpose of controlling their behavior and reactions with words, whether to lead or mislead them, emphasizing the power of language considering translation a double-edged weapon when dealt with media field. This study consists in spotting the main influencing factors that are present in one translation, addressing a specific targeted receiver and underlying how they affect them afterwards. We will try to answer some main questions as to what extent translation is able to affect peoples’ attitudes and thoughts. How was it used as an ideology vehicle in media field? How does word have the power for change? Is manipulation through translation ethically condemned or is it allowed when complying with a specific strategy and purposes of the translation’s sending organization? While some researchers relate this action to infidelity to the original, it is seen in this study from another perspective which is manipulation and how words serve this objective powerfully
Understanding the Meanings Represented in Ditolobonya Songs: Basotho Women’s Experiences and Realities
For a very long time, women have been silenced in expressing their feelings and talking about their experiences in their societies dominated by patriarchal ideologies. For this reason, Basotho woman use ditolobonya songs (through pitiki) in an effort to deal with the abuse, ill-treatment and all the hardships they go through in their relationships and marriages. This study is necessitated by the discovery I made while listening to these songs that somehow they portray what Basotho women go through in their lives ranging from issues of love, appreciation of a partner, problems they encounter in their relationships, more especially their marriages, to how they are ill-treated by their in-laws as well as their own husbands. As a result, this triggered me to analyze ditolobonya songs to understand what Basotho women go through and how they express their feelings through these songs. The aim of this study therefore is to investigate the extent to which Basotho women use ditolobonya songs to narrate their life experiences. The present study therefore, is premised qualitatively on an Africana-feminism as its base for theoretical framework. For the purpose of this paper, I use Africana womanism as critiques came up on feminism for failing to address the experiences and realities of Africana women. I purposely selected five songs centered on the focus of my study and analyzed them using content analysis. The findings of the study indicate that Basotho women use ditolobonya songs to narrate the challenges they encounter in their marriages and advise one another
Additive Discourse Markers in English Journal Articles Written by Kurdish and English Native Speakers: A Corpus-Based Study
This paper reports a study that examines the use of additive discourse markers written by Kurdish scholars of English and compares their use with English native speakers. In this study, five discourse markers of 'and, or, for example, for instance, thus' are specifically analyzed. It aimed to investigate functions, frequency, and sentence positions of additive discourse markers. To achieve this, the researchers utilized two language corpora of 34 research articles published by Kurdish scholars in different journals of Iraqi Kurdistan Region Universities and international journals, and a corpus of 27 research articles published by English native scholars in different English Journals. Quantitative as well as qualitative research methods were employed. The results of this study showed that Kurdish scholars overused 'and' and 'for instance' in their writing; however, they underused 'or, for example, and thus'. Moreover, it showed that in both types of writings, there is a similarity in the frequent use of the medial position of additive discourse markers
Linguistic Landscape and Symbolic construction of Multilingual Literacies: Between Creativity and Communication
Understanding communication within expanding public spaces creates the need for the interpretation of changing connections of written texts and linguistic knowledge prominent in an environment. Studies on public space language are referred to as linguistic landscape studies (LL). This study demonstrates a link between language, culture and social practices within an environment and shows how visual designs, pictures and signs transcend information for effective communication. Multilingual literacies on the other hand help in the description of the many forms of language interaction and analysis of the different domains of language use. This study thus, aims at exploring the presence of visible texts of written languages on public spaces such as billboards, road and navigation signs, shop signage’s campaign posters, graffiti and general adverts within the selected environment. This research centers on the theoretical notions of Landry and Bourhis (1997) on: “the visibility and salience of languages on public and commercial signs in a given territory or region” and Gorter (2006) who sees LL as opening a “new approach to multilingualism”. The data is collected through fieldwork, interview, participant observation and snapshots. This study argues that since linguistic landscape studies have expanded the roles and functions of creative designs, pictures and languages in different settings, language should not be the sole strategy for analyzing expressions or ideas rather linguistic landscape should also be adopted because it interprets processes, expressions and social realities in multilingual environments. This study recommends systematic description of linguistic artifacts of given environments as a means of enhancing multilingual literacy

Investigating Application of Literary Methods for Interpretation and Translation of Religious Text
In some contexts of use, text interpretation and accurate conveyance of meaning has a critical importance. Religious texts, on top of that, Quranic texts have inherent intricacies which renders the job of Islamic exegetes and expounders very difficult. Considering the importance of these texts for Muslims and extensive foreign readers, the current research is an attempt to examine the application of major literary methods of text interpretation for interpretation and translation of Quranic text. To this aim taxonomy of methods discussed by Titscher, et al (2012) was selected as the theoretical baseline for the study. The findings of the research showed that commentators can employ literary methods toward literary text interpretation for Quranic interpretation directly or with some considerations. The findings also indicated that, application of these methods requires further investigation because translation is inherently different from interpretation. It was concluded that, according to Shiite school of thought, for Quranic interpretation, methods of text analysis is only a tool and exegetes stand in the need of some internal and external resources amongst which is traditional quotations and Hadith from the side of immaculate Imams
Sino-US Trade Friction in Western and Chinese Media: A Critical Discourse Analysis
Since US President Donald Trump took office, Sino-US relations have undergone a significant change. The Trump administration ignored WTO rules and made a series of allegations against China. In 2018, the trade war between China and the United States broke out, which has aroused widespread concern worldwide. In order to expose the ideology behind the media reports, taking Halliday’s systemic functional grammar, Fairclough's three-dimensional model and corpus analysis as theoretical basis, this thesis conducts contrastive analysis of news reports on trade friction from China Daily, The New York Times and The Guardian, finding that China Daily always represents Chinese government’s position, emphasizing bilateral consultations and peaceful resolution and establishing a positive and responsible image of a big country; The New York Times does not always stand by the side of the US government, especially of President Trump; as a third party in Sino-US trade, British mainstream medium, The Guardian, adopts a neutral attitude in most cases, but some of its reports make negative comments on China and the United States both. Therefore, through critical discourse analysis, the public can be helped to improve their sensitivity to news reports and not to be the stupid crow
The Use of Social Media in Facilitating the Teaching and Learning Process: A Case Study of Undergraduates at University of Bisha in Saudi Arabia
The study explores the use of social media in accelerating the teaching and learning process of English language. It was conducted in the Girls college of Al Namas, University of Bisha, Saudi Arabia. The electronic questionnaire consisted of multiple closed questions to acquire both qualitative and quantitative results. The participants are undergraduate students of the English Department of the above-mentioned college. The data was analyzed using pie chart and histogram. During the period of teaching English language, we, as lecturers, noticed that the students are very efficient in the use of modern technology, but unfortunately, they do not use them in the target language, instead they use all the social media networks in their mother tongue, i.e, Arabic. This way even being coherent to the modern technology they do not use it to improve their second language skill. Their disposition of using Arabic language everywhere and everything creates a big hindrance for them to avail the benefits of social media networks in learning English language. Through this paper we tried to motivate the students to enhance their capabilities to utilize social media network in boosting their English language skills. At the same time, we have tried to make the English language as an interesting subject to facilitate the teaching and learning process
