The Anaphoras of Mar Theodore of Mopsuestia in the East Syriac Rite and of St. John Chrysostom in the Byzantine Church "“ Structure and Theology

    Get PDF
The Liturgy (Mass) is the very life of the Church and its way of existing. In the core of the Liturgy there is the Anaphora, specific to each rite. Regarding the East Syriac Church, one mainly knows three important anaphoras "“ of Mar Addai and Mari, of Mar Theodore of Mopsuestia and of Mar Nestorius. This paper is focused on the Anaphora of Mar Theodore of Mopsuestia in the East Syriac rite, analysed in parallel with that of St. John Chrysostom, the most used anaphora in the Byzantine Tradition. Both of the authors are significant representatives of the Theological School of Antioch. This subject was scarcely analysed by the contemporary scholars and it gets a plus of importance in my case for accompanies an on-going process of translating the Syriac text of Theodore"™s anaphora into Romanian, for the benefit of the Romanian theologians. The paper will be divided into two sections "“ the first one colligated to the authorship of the two anaphoras, and the second, focused on their structure and theology. Concrete conclusions regarding the identification of some liturgical-theological constants in both the anaphoras will end my research.  Keywords: Anaphora of Theodore of Mopsuestia, Anaphora of John Chrysostom, liturgical theology, epiclesis, Theological School of Antioch

A Different Look at the Trinity

    Get PDF
For most Christians the doctrine of the Trinity is accepted as a matter of fact. Especially in systematic theology the Trinity is frequently used as the starting point for theological deliberations. Yet when we ask a Christian lay person what this doctrine means we usually do not get an answer. Does this mean that theologians have not really communicated the meaning of this doctrine to the Christian community or have they delved into something that is totally incomprehensible? Keywords: Trinity, Father, Son, Holy Spirit, Christianism, Person, Substance, Bible, Jewish monotheis

The Soul's Powers and the Process of Knowledge in the Writings of Simon Taibuteh

    Get PDF
In the line of the ascetical tradition, the knowledge of God is the very aim of spiritual life. Divine knowledge is possible, on the one hand, because of God"™s revelation and, on the other hand, due to human"™s anatomical and spiritual structure. Thus, one may find specific cognitive powers of the body and, in correspondence, of the soul, that stand at the very basis of the process of knowledge, worldly or spiritual. Simon Taibuteh is one of the mystical writers of the East Syriac Church who, having also a medical education, describes spiritual life and, in consequence, divine knowledge, using an anatomic terminology next to the anthropological-theological language, specific to his religious community. His special merits focus on the endeavour of creating bridges between these two domains and, eventually, to describing the soteriological itinerary as a process of healing both physically and spiritually. He is an example of the medical preoccupation in the monastic communities. This paper is divided into three sections, following a general short introduction, dealing firstly with the process of knowledge as described by the author himself, then a synthesis of the way of using the concept "œpowers of the soul" by some representative Syriac authors, and, finally, the use of the same concept in Simon"™s writings and the way he involves them in the very process of knowledge

    Get PDF
The work of a doctor, as well as that of a priest, is based on the consciousness of a mission of "œman towards man". In understanding that religion, medicine, Church and Hospital are inseparable allies trying to save the human being from its shortcomings, Bishop Nicholae Ivan tried to attract to the Theological Academy in Cluj renowned doctors of the time, and disciplines such as pastoral medicine or hygiene were found constantly in the curricula. This essay aims to provide the forms and way in which these teacher physicians have come to concretize the project of Christian medicine, a model in which the initiative has proven to be creative

The Pastoral Profile of Father Ioan Sabău Reflected in the Documents from the Archives of Security

    Get PDF
Father Ioan Sabau (1941-2009) had been a worthy priest and confessor of his faith who has built a grandiose church, such as a cathedral, in Vinerea locality, Alba county during a full communist era. The hallowing of this church had been the excuse of arresting Father Ioan, but the real reason for which he was taken into the Security attention was the "guilt" of completely achieving his priestly mission. The Father's prosecution from the CNSAS archive contains almost 850 pages, from which it can be distinguished the pastoral face of father Ioan Sabau, his qualities and his diligences. If we bear in mind that all the hard work of the informers of the security was to find reasons to compromise the father, we do understand that the value of these confessions is given by the fact that they were some of the Father's enemies. Keywords: confessor of the orthodox faith, communist era, priestly mission, Father Ioan Sabau, CNSAS archive, Vinerea locality

BACKGROUND-UL PAULIN AL IMNULUI HRISTOLOGIC DIN EPISTOLA CĂTRE FILIPENI 2: 6-11

    Get PDF

THE PAULINE BACKGROUND OF THE CHRISTOLOGICAL HYMN IN THE EPISTLE TO PHILIPPIANS 2: 6-11

This research tries to explore an insufficient area of romanian biblical studies, and also to offer pertinent solutions. The question of christological hymn paternity it"™s inadequately treated, that"™s why I started this original research. First I interrogated the most highlighting theories of modern scholars (a pre-pauline composition; an adamic christology; hymn inspired by the Servant of the Lord; an midrash technique; a subsequent composition introduced within the epistle), then I elaborated my own pro-pauline argumentation. Another challenge was the construct of an accurate translation of the hymn, forced by ours precarious translating tradition, that occures many fallacies synonyms

God of Mercy, People of Mercy

Portia"™s well known speech in Shakespeare"™s The Merchant of Venice"”probably quoted a lot in this Year of Mercy"”startled me when I read it once again as I searched for words in literature to speak to you about mercy in a Year of Mercy. I was startled, because I found in these beautiful, powerful words the entire outline of what I want to share in this presentation about Mercy and Mission. God"™s mercy, Shakespeare says, is an attribute of God as such. God is a God of Mercy, and human beings are most like God when they are merciful themselves, especially "œseasoning" justice with mercy. Without God"™s mercy, if God dealt "œwith us according to our sins" (Ps 103:10), none of us would see salvation. Keywords: God of Mercy, Mission, People of Mercy, Merc
