Literary Criticism: Its Present Status in Latin America

    No full text
Part 1: The afternoon session on literature issues begins with introductory remarks by Allen Phillips and Rodolfo Cardona, who introduces the panelists. Tomas Segovia is the first to begin discussing the the present status of literary criticism in Latin America. Part 2: The panel focuses on a comprehensive discourse on the nature, evolution, and challenges of literary criticism and ideology in Latin America, with particular focus on Brazil and broader Hispanic America. Jaime adds a historical perspective on Latin American literary criticism, highlighting its social and political ties from the 19th century to the present, the institutionalization of criticism in universities, and the fragmentation of literary works detached from their social contexts. Part 3: Octavio Paz and other panelists address the unique relationship between literary criticism and philosophical and scientific thought in Europe. The discussion expands to the current role of literary criticism in Latin America, addressing distinctions between university and non-university criticism. It is proposed that criticism should be a dialogical and therapeutic space, beyond ideological monologue, with the journal Plural as an attempt to create this plural and rational space. Debates among academics reflect divergences on the function, scope, and ideological nature of literary criticism and theory, as well as the difficulties of constructing authentic critical thinking in contexts where criticism itself can become a form of ideology

Part I: A comprehensive examination of Brazil's growing influence across Latin America. It highlights Brazil's diplomatic, economic, and political engagement in countries like Chile, Bolivia, and Uruguay, where Brazilian investments and partnerships have surged, often coinciding with right-wing coups or military-backed regimes. In Argentina, the tacit support of President Juan Perón has fueled a right-wing police coup in Córdoba, leading to federal intervention and resistance from leftist groups. Reports from the New York Times and Mexican daily Excelsior suggest that the events in Córdoba could signal a broader crackdown on left-wing Peronist governments across multiple provinces. In Guatemala, the recent presidential election saw all candidates being high-ranking army officers, raising concerns about military influence and electoral legitimacy. Despite a decline in violence, opposition groups dispute the election results and face censorship for dissenting views, underscoring ongoing political tensions in the region. Part II: A discussion on Brazilian economic expansion in relation to US-Latin American dynamics. Brazil, leveraging its ties with the US, invests in neighboring countries' raw material production and influences right-wing coups, leading to concerns and regional shifts. Opposition to Bolivia's integration into Brazil emphasizes maintaining Bolivia's independence, while Brazilian expansionism affects democratic institutions in countries like Uruguay and Chile. Brazil's focus on Africa for resources and investment reflects its aim to represent the Third World. Growing economic ties with Nigeria signal a shift in global trade, with plans to expand influence beyond South America by increasing trade with Black African countries. The Function of Latin American Literature as Criticism

    No full text
Part 1: The panel session addresses the complexities and challenges faced by Latin American literature in defining its critical role, the sociocultural commitment of literature, and its artistic autonomy. The panelists offer diverse perspectives, ranging from literature as a socio-political tool to literature as an autonomous artistic expression. The discussion grapples with questions around literature’s relationship to historical and political realities versus its intrinsic expressive and humanistic value Part 2: Jose Mindlin discusses the evolution of social and political critique in Brazilian literature, beginning with Castro Alves, who contributed to the abolition of slavery through poetry. The panel also discusses the function of literature as a way of social critique in censoring and repressive governments that intensify the critical role of literature in Latin American. Part 3: Alazraki introduces the idea that art and literature generate reality through language, which is an expressive and epistemological medium, not a simple photograph of reality. Carlos questions the generality of the concept of the critical function of literature and suggests analyzing specific works to better understand its scope, pointing out that there has also been uncritical literature in Latin America. José clarifies that literature committed to social reality should not be confused with partisan propaganda and that there is the possibility of pure artistic creation within literature. Jaime Concha and other participants delve into how historical and political contexts, such as coups d'état or authoritarian regimes, influence the genesis and development of literary works, without reducing them to mere reflections of those contexts. Part 4: The literature panels draws to a close with final remarks and general questions from the audience

Part I: The kidnapping of US consul Terrrence Leonhardy by revolutionary armed forces in Guadalajara, led to government concessions and heightened tensions between left and right factions. President Echeverría faced criticism for his handling of the incident and encountered opposition to his reform programs amid terrorism, inflation, and labor unrest. Domestic unrest in Colombia, including strikes and guerrilla attacks, as well as the ongoing dispute with Venezuela over territorial waters and oil deposits. Despite political turbulence, Colombia's major parties prepared for upcoming elections, signaling the decline of the National Front agreement. African liberation struggles, the oil crisis, and Arab Unity's efforts against colonial racism in Africa, with implications for Latin America. Observers speculate on potential conflicts between Nigeria and Brazil over oil supplies, suggesting Nigeria may pressure Brazil to support African liberation movements. Part II: The Brazilian foreign ministry expresses concerns over decisions made at an OAU meeting and warns of potential implications for Brazil. Rising petroleum prices prompt Petrobras to increase petrol prices by 10%, highlighting Brazil's vulnerability due to heavy dependence on petroleum. Military engagements in Colombia signal a shift towards addressing guerrilla groups' social origins, echoing sentiments from a Latin American military meeting in Caracas. Insights from Jorge Mario Eastman and Colonel Rodriguez underscore the military's recognition of guerrilla movements' social objectives, advocating profound societal reforms. The UN's declaration of Puerto Rico as a US colony challenges US claims of Puerto Rico's independence, reflecting global skepticism. Mexico grapples with an energy crisis and inflation despite producing most of its oil, prompting significant price increases and austerity measures. President Juan Perón of Argentina suggests US military involvement in the Watergate scandal, highlighting broader tensions between military organizations and politicians in Latin America.
