Biogeochemistry of phytoplankton RuBisCO in the ocean

    No full text
Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate oxygenase/carboxylase (RuBisCO) is the most abundant enzyme on Earth, playing a key role in carbon fixation during oxygenic photosynthesis. Form I RuBisCO is found in marine photosynthesizers and land plants. There are different Types of Form I RuBisCO, which vary in amino acid length and composition. The objective of this research was to determine the amounts of elemental resources (C, N, S) associated with the different Types of RuBisCO found in marine phytoplankton. This was achieved by converting published protein sequence data (from UniProt KB) into elemental data for the large and small subunit proteins in RuBisCO. The results of these calculations are presented in this database for the large subunit (L), small subunit (S), and L8S8 holoenzyme of RuBisCO for marine photosynthetic organisms and representative land plants

Latin American Press Review, Program 1974-14, 1974 March 21

Part I: The Latin American Press Review this week covers the impact of multinational corporations on Mexican shipping and agricultural exports, Uruguay's current state post-military takeover, and reports on the harsh treatment of political prisoners by the Chilean junta. In Mexico, there are concerns about high tariffs imposed by multinational shipping companies, prompting shipping through Brownsville, Texas. Fraud in Mexican agricultural exports is also highlighted, with allegations of foreign companies evading export duties. Ambassadors from Peru and Ecuador accuse the US of protecting its interests through international banks. In Uruguay, there's a growing military influence, with expectations of them assuming absolute control soon. Economic decline, rising prices, and the repression of the Tupamaros guerrilla movement characterize Uruguay's situation, leading to the dissolution of democratic institutions and press censorship. These reports are sourced from Mexico City's leading Daily Excelsior. Uruguayan University's rector and deans have been replaced after two months in jail on subversion charges, alongside notable figures like novelist Juan Carlos Onetti. Political prisoners in Uruguay are on the rise, with estimates doubling over the past year. Uruguay's economic and political crises have led to a surge in emigration among its skilled class. The military blames civilian politicians and leftists for the country's problems, while businesses call for tax reforms. Uruguay's economic downturn, exacerbated by the oil crisis, has led to public discontent and a loss of faith in the military regime. In Chile, the death of former Minister Jose Toha in military custody raises suspicions of foul play, with conflicting official accounts. Reports of brutal treatment by the Chilean junta emerge, along with restrictions on political activities in unions. These events reflect the ongoing political turmoil and human rights abuses in Latin America, as reported by various news sources. Files include CSVs of the annotated transcriptions and lists of places, people, organizations, subjects, and media sources mentioned in the radio program

Dataset: Teleseismic Shear Wave Splitting Measurements in Alaska

    No full text
This dataset contains shear wave splitting measurements of teleseismic S, ScS, SKS and SKKS phases recorded by the Alaska broadband seismic network. It includes events from March 2004 to January 2020 with magnitudes (Mw) > 5.5 and focal depths > 200 km, covering a backazimuthal range of 90°–300° around Alaska. The shear wave splitting analysis was conducted using the SplitLab software, available from Wüstefeld et al. (2008). These measurements accompany the paper titled 'Analysis of Shear Wave Splitting Patterns in Alaska: Evidence for Strong Intra-slab Anisotropy', yet to be published in Geophysical Research Letters (GRL)

Part I: Panama exerts diplomatic pressure on US through the UN Security Council meeting in 1971 regarding Panamanian sovereignty and jurisdiction over the Canal Zone; Internal struggles and ideological divisions within Chile's Popular Unity government; Brazilian Bishops denounce human rights violations and discrimination under military government; Upcoming Chile-US talks on financial disputes; Latin American nations oppose Britain's Organization of American States observer status. Part II: This week's feature delves into the ongoing conflict between multinational corporations and Latin American nationalist governments, using the case of ITT's involvement in Chile as a focal point. The recent resurgence of ITT's secret memorandums has underscored the immense influence these corporations wield in the region. Senate hearings revealed ITT's extensive efforts to protect its investments in Chile, including lobbying the Nixon Administration and potentially supporting a coup against President Allende. Despite these efforts, ITT failed to prevent Allende's election. The situation highlights the complex dynamics between corporations and governments in Latin America, with nationalist sentiments often challenging corporate interests. Part I: In Chile, after a failed coup against President Allende, the government strengthened, with workers forming councils to resist further right-wing actions. In Guatemala, military repression led to the massacre of peasants involved in land occupations. Brazil’s future president, General Geisel, is portrayed as a conservative aligned with foreign corporations, and Brazil is accused of heavy-handed regional interventions. In Uruguay, a dictatorship faced worker strikes and protests, while leftist resistance groups, like the Tupamaros, vowed to continue fighting. The U.S. and Soviet Union faced international criticism for continued nuclear testing, despite past treaties. Part II: In an interview, Professor David Barkin discusses Mexico's agricultural crisis, where 3% of farmers control most of the irrigated land and machinery, leaving much of the rural population impoverished. Despite decades of economic growth, the majority have not benefited, as wealth and resources are concentrated in both agriculture and industry. He highlights how 1% of firms dominate manufacturing and Mexico’s reliance on U.S. markets and imports exacerbates the situation. Inflation, trade restrictions, and social inequality are growing concerns, with tourism being a government strategy to mitigate economic challenges. This deposit contains datasets associated with the manuscript titled "The hunt for research data: development of an open-source workflow for tracking institutionally affiliated research data publications"; this is associated with a preprint posted to arXiv and an article published in the Journal of eScience Librarianship. The datasets are the results of a scripted workflow to identify published research datasets (and software deposits) that are affiliated in some form with The University of Texas at Austin. The associated codebase is currently maintained on GitHub (https://github.com/utlibraries/research-data-discovery/issues), with the static version deposited on Zenodo. These outputs are provided primarily as static deposits in support of the associated manuscript, and this deposit is not intended to be versioned perpetually beyond the publication of the manuscript. Users seeking the most up-to-date data will need to run the workflow themselves and refer to the codebase's documentation for disclaimers about use of the resultant data for any decision-making processes.</b
