Alcohol v.s. Sports
This study examines the relationship between alcohol consumption, physical and mental health, and the success of collegiate athletic teams during the 2023-2024 season. Focusing exclusively on current seniors, the research utilizes survey data to assess drinking habits, exercise frequency, practice schedules, dietary habits, mental health perceptions, and academic performance (GPA). Through regression analysis, the study aims to determine the extent to which these factors influence a team’s overall success, providing insights into the role of health and lifestyle choices in athletic performance
Fashionably Late? Delay in Issue Assignment and Aggregator Databases
Most publishers these days publish articles in an ahead of print state in which they can be read before being assigned to an issue. Unfortunately for users accessing through aggregator database vendors like EBSCO and ProQuest, articles don’t reach the databases until they’re in an issue. Our research found that for some publications, this delay in issue assignment could exceed a year. What can we do about it?
PARE Project - Antibiotic Resistance in the Community
Students in our Microbiology Lab (BIOL333L) participated in the Prevalence for Antibiotic Resistance in the Environment (PARE) Project initiative developed by Tufts University to test antibiotic resistance to tetracycline of bacteria in environmental soil samples across the country. PARE is conducting this research to address the global health crises antibiotic resistance causes using a “crowdsourcing approach” to track environmental antibiotic-resistance in a way that can not be accomplished by a single research group.Students in the lab collected soil samples from around the Rochester community to test for the presence of antibiotic resistant bacteria. Sample sites were chosen based on predictions of potentially high resistance to antibiotics. Soil and water samples were serial diluted and plated on selective media in the presence of various concentrations of tetracycline. Colony forming units (CFU/1g of soil) were calculated for the various samples to determine the total number of bacteria and percent that were tetracycline resistant. Data will be uploaded into the PARE database in order to coordinate efforts with students around the country to understand more about the presence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the environment. This project is part of a multi-week exploratory assignment for BIOL333L

Calculating the Cost: Loss and Grieving Through the Demands of Higher Education
To make it through my final year of my doctoral degree, I had to focus on my research more and my mom less. I had spent most of my life worrying and caring for my mom through her mental health struggles. In September 2017, my mom ended her life. I was pressured into returning to my academic responsibilities shortly after her death. I buried my emotions to get through it. Less than a year later, I started my career in higher education in New York immediately after submitting my dissertation, leaving myself no time to grieve or to be vulnerable. The discussions at the State of Women of Color in New York Higher Education Symposium allowed me to reflect on my trauma and grief in a new light
