The Association Between Early Exposure to Antibiotics and Childhood Asthma Incidence
No full textThis review examines the association between early exposure to antibiotics and the incidence of asthma in childhood, highlighting significant public health concerns related to antibiotic overuse. The misuse of antibiotics not only contributes to antibiotic resistance but may also impact long-term health outcomes, particularly respiratory diseases like asthma. Emerging evidence suggests that early antibiotic exposure may disrupt gut microbiota, altering immune responses and increasing the risk of asthma development. A systematic review of twenty-seven studies identified a significant correlation between antibiotic use in infancy and subsequent asthma diagnoses. However, there remains a need for further research to delineate the extent of this association, as much of the existing literature primarily focuses on antibiotic resistance. This review analyzes four quantitative studies that investigate the relationship between antibiotic exposure in early life and asthma incidence. Findings indicate a dose-dependent relationship, with increased asthma risk correlating with the frequency and type of antibiotics prescribed during infancy. These results underscore the necessity for healthcare providers to exercise caution when prescribing antibiotics to infants, promoting awareness of potential long-term health implications. Further research is essential to deepen our understanding of this association, which can inform clinical practices and pediatric healthcare strategies aimed at reducing asthma incidence among children

Essential to achieving this goal is understanding the relevance of racial and cultural identities in our interactions, and a willingness and ability to engage in frank discussions about race and racism. Grounded in reflective practice, somatic abolitionism, and social justice education theory, this practice brief articulates six guiding principles for culturally responsive facilitation within diversity, equity, and inclusion workshops for adult learners. We use our collective experience implementing a mentorship education intervention, Culturally Aware Mentoring, with faculty in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine to illustrate these principles
Impact of Visitation on the Mental Health Outcomes of Patients in the ICU Environment
No full textIntensive Care Units (ICUs) are hospital units designed to help care for patients who are critically ill. The ICU provides these patients with specialized medical and nursing care, enhanced monitoring, and multiple approaches to help physiologic organ support. These units handle severe, life-threatening medical cases (Marshal et al., 2017). Patients in these intensive care units experience a wide variety of changes which can contribute to their mental health. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), mental health is “a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community” (Galderisi et al., 2015). One factor that contributes to patients\u27 mental health is their support system, this includes but is not limited to family, friends, and co-workers. The visitation policies that ICUs have in place affects the patients’ ability to connect with their support systems which can overall impact the patients’ mental health, specifically their level of anxiety and depression
