Do family business NextGens need outside work experience?
Requiring family members to work outside the family firm is a hotly debated topic. While family business advisers have long recommended outside employment as the “best way” to prepare the next generation, there is no research to support this claim.
With the help of colleagues from six family business centers around the country, we asked 37 members of 11 successful and sizeable U.S. family businesses what their experiences were. Some had the requirement, others did not. We also looked at the benefits and problems experienced by families who had a requirement and by families who did not have one. Participating families were members of the third or later generations. The CEO of each company was interviewed, as well as at least one other family member and a non-family member who works closely with the CEO
Perspectives of Speech-Language Pathologists on Strategies and Skills to Support Parental Involvement in Language Stimulation and Co-Viewing
The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to guide the role of parents in language stimulation and parental co-viewing as it relates to linguistic development and adult-child facilitated screen use in toddlers. The study explored New York State licensed and certified speech language pathologist’s (SLPs) perceptions of a healthy balance of screen time (ST), playtime, and parent-child interaction. Objectives included understanding the impact of ST on communication skills and exploring how adult–child engagement influences language development outcomes in children under age 5. The methodology involved one-on-one interviews via Zoom with the SLPs, using semi-structured questions. Data was collected, transcribed, and analyzed through coding and thematic analysis to identify key themes. Findings revealed 10 key themes: the positive impact of screen time limits on language development, the role of caregiver engagement, effective early intervention models, regular parent-SLP interactions, effective use of digital platforms, broad outreach strategies, challenges in conveying information, the importance of clear communication, barriers to awareness, and the need for targeted educational campaigns and collaborations. The study emphasized the importance of caregiver involvement, structured early interventions, and effective communication strategies in mitigating the negative impacts of ST on children\u27s language development. It highlighted the need for increased awareness and targeted educational campaigns, suggesting that SLPs, educators, and policymakers collaborate to support optimal language development in young children
Insights into the regulation of malate dehydrogenase: inhibitors, activators, and allosteric modulation by small molecules
Cellular metabolism comprises a complex network of biochemical anabolic and catabolic processes that fuel the growth and survival of living organisms. The enzyme malate dehydrogenase (MDH) is most known for its role in oxidizing malate to oxaloacetate (OAA) in the last step of the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, but it also participates in the malate-aspartate shuttle in the mitochondria as well as the glyoxylate cycle in plants. These pathways and the specific reactions within them are dynamic and must be carefully calibrated to ensure a balance between nutrient/energy supply and demand. MDH structural and functional complexity requires a variety of regulatory mechanisms, including allosteric regulation, feedback, and competitive inhibition, which are often dependent on whether the enzyme is catalyzing its forward or reverse reaction. Given the role of MDH in central metabolism and its potential as a target for therapeutics in both cancer and infectious diseases, there is a need to better understand its regulation. The involvement of MDH in multiple pathways makes it challenging to identify which effectors are critical to its activity. Many of the in vitro experiments examining MDH regulation were done decades ago, and though allosteric sites have been proposed, none to date have been specifically mapped. This review aims to provide an overview of the current knowledge surrounding MDH regulation by its substrate, products, and other intermediates of the TCA cycle while highlighting all the gaps in our understanding of its regulatory mechanisms
