We\u27re All in This Together : Examining the Perspectives of Community Leaders Participating in Health Coalitions to Address Health Disparities
No full textThis hermeneutic phenomenology study explores the experiences of community-based organization (CBO) leaders in the Rochester, New York, Finger Lakes region, who have collaborated to address health disparities. The COVID-19 pandemic shed light on the existence of health disparities. Collaboration challenges like fragmentation and misaligned objectives persist. Understanding the facilitators and barriers of collaborative efforts is essential for informed strategies and policies to tackle health disparities effectively. The study consisted of leaders from CBOs, coalitions, and community groups who each had more than three years of experience in a collaboration to address health disparities. Eleven community leaders from diverse professional backgrounds participated. Open-ended interviews were conducted to elicit suitable responses for hermeneutic phenomenological analysis. Thematic analysis was employed, and the theoretical framework guiding this study was Collective Impact (CI). The study uncovered five key findings. Firstly, participants favored collective advocacy over individual strategies. Secondly, while not experts in the Collective Impact Framework, they showed expertise crucial for its success. Thirdly, community leaders noted challenges in collaboration. Fourthly, community leaders highlighted attributes for successful collaboration. Lastly, exposure to health disparities increased commitment to advocacy efforts. Community leaders are crucial in health collaboration and tackling health disparities. Despite challenges, unwavering commitment to enhancing healthcare in our communities is essential. This research advocates cultivating inclusive, equitable, resilient healthcare collaborations, empowering community leaders, and fostering effective teamwork to drive sustainable change

Exploring the Influence of Black Male Graduates’ Cross-Racial Relationships on Social Engagement During Their Undergraduate Years at a Predominantly White Institution
No full textWith a sample of 12 Black male college graduates, the purpose of this study was to explore the factors that influenced the participants’ cross-racial relationships with their peers at a predominantly White institution (PWI), how stereotypes and biases affected their relationships and social engagements, and how the participants navigated power dynamics and the microaggressions that occurred within their formed and maintained cross-racial relationships during their undergraduate years. The theoretical frameworks for this study were social identity theory and contact hypothesis, which provided a foundation for examining how stereotypes, biases, power dynamics, and microaggressions affect cross-racial relationships. The findings from this study highlight the significance of racial identity, institutional support, and social networks in shaping the social engagement of Black male students during their undergraduate years. This study offers insights into the conditions that promote cross-racial interactions with a goal to inform institutional strategies and interventions to enhance inclusivity and support for Black male collegians at PWIs, ultimately contributing to their academic success and overall well-being. The research emphasized the importance of fostering an environment where Black male students can thrive through meaningfully formed and maintained cross-racial relationships, thereby addressing systemic inequities and promoting a more equitable higher education landscape. From a practical perspective, implementation of mandatory training programs for faculty, staff, and students at PWIs to address implicit biases and microaggressions are recommended, as well as strengthening support structures for Black male students, including mentoring programs. Stakeholders should review campus policies to promote inclusivity, including reviewing commuter student engagement, enhancing diversity, and valuing cross-racial interactions
Using Morning Meetings to Build Classroom Community
No full textMorning meetings are commonly used within elementary classrooms as a means to build and strengthen classroom communities. Grounded in constructivist theory, this study aims to determine if morning meetings impact elementary students’ feelings about their classroom community. To do this, surveys were administered to 19 third-grade students before and after they participated in morning meetings for a week. Responses from the surveys were coded and a t-test was conducted to determine if differences between the pre-survey and post-survey responses were statistically significant. Results from the analysis of the data indicate that morning meetings do impact a students’ sense of safety within their classroom community, but that other components of the classroom community, such as a sense of belonging, are not impacted by morning meetings. Therefore, it is important that teachers do not rely solely on morning meetings to build their classroom communities. Instead, the values of classroom communities must be present within the classroom throughout every aspect of the school day
