Poster, Performed: Understanding Public Opinions of Authorship in Generative Artificial Intelligence Models via Analogy
Over the last decade, generative artificial intelligence models have advanced significantly and provided the public with several tools to create new works of art. However, the true authorship of these works has been debated due to their training on web-scraped data. Serving as an analogy to these larger models, Poster, Performed is an interactive artificial intelligence exhibition project that uses image assets submitted by the public to create poster compositions with custom image processing algorithms. During the course of a four-day exhibition, visitors were asked to identify the exhibition’s primary artist from five options: (1) participants who submitted image assets, (2) the programmer, (3) the artificial intelligence software, (4) the exhibition’s design team, and (5) the printers that output the posters. Survey data revealed that the participants who submitted image assets and the exhibition’s project team were the project’s most salient artists, each tied for the most responses. Within the analogy to state-of-the-art models, this finding implies that artworks produced with these generative tools would be best credited to the users who prompted the works and the original authors of the content used for model training
Metadata and the Media Ecology Project
Over the years, the Media Ecology Project (MEP) has assembled a significant digital collection of moving images, books, and photographs of research value. From 2020 to 2022, MEP has taken several initiatives to improve the management and organization of the collection and its metadata, including creating a database and updating the existing schema. This article looks back at some of the challenges encountered during the process and forward to potential further developments
UV Self-Sterilizing Central Line Catheter
Central-line associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI) are a potentially lethal side effect of central-line catheter insertion and use. Currently, there are no targeted approaches to reduce the risk of developing a CLABSI. This project aims to develop a UV-based sterilization system to sterilize incoming catheter fluid. The final design is a single-channel attachment that attaches to a patient catheter port via Luer locks, with UV-LED diodes placed on top of a quartz glass window in the channel to sterilize fluid as it flows through the device. This report describes four primary technical objectives, including measuring the radiation achieved by UV-LED diodes, developing a 3D-printed prototype of the device, measuring the bactericidal properties of the combined UV-LED and channel design, and measuring the effect of the channel on incoming fluid flow. Based on the experimental results, we identified a potentially feasible device design that met the UV radiation and fluid flow requirements. The device was found to be bactericidal at low clinical flow rates, but efficacy dropped as flow rates increased. Additionally, the temperature of the diode was found to increase rapidly while powered. Future work should address the issue of heat emitted by the diode as well as potential redesigning of the circuit board used to power the diodes
Charting Canons: Identities and Institutions behind Bestselling and Award-Winning American Fiction from 1913 to 2023.
How has the level and type of education received by bestselling and award-winning authors changed? How has publisher size and type changed for these same books? Does an author’s education influence the kind of publisher who produces their book? This study examines two of the institutions most involved in producing works of fiction—universities and publishers. I pull from the top-ten bestsellers as listed by Publishers Weekly as well as winners and finalists of the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, and the PEN/Faulkner Award between 1913 and 2023. I compare bestselling and award-winning fiction along the metrics of their authors’ educational backgrounds and the books’ publishers, plotting how they vary over time, running and analyzing changing effects models. Findings indicate that the proportions of authors who graduated college and who attended private schools have steadily risen, almost linearly, while the share of authors who studied at prestigious universities has been slightly declining. The rates of books published by large and conglomerate publishers have exponentially increased, beginning in the mid-twentieth century. Prestige in educational background does not seem to be correlated to publisher size. Moreover, there is a growing gap in educational prestige between bestsellers and award winners over time. Both categories of books have similar shares of large, corporate publishers, except in the past few decades when bestsellers have been published by such companies at a greater rate. This study thus provides insight into what schools and publishers most impact American literature, both among the public and elites
