    Case Study: Techno-Economic Assessment of Additive Manufacturing for Equipment Maintenance

    This report presents the outcomes of a case study focused on exploring the potential of Additive Manufacturing (AM) to address challenges associated with equipment maintenance and life cycles for a major global retailer. The project centered on the issue of replacing a critical machine component frequently subject to wear and traditionally sourced from external suppliers. Such dependency poses several risks including the possibility of discontinued parts, extended procurement lead times, high part costs, and associated environmental footprint. The study evaluated the compatibility of AM for producing this component using six common AM materials (PLA, ABS, Nylon, Carbon Fiber Reinforced Nylon, Zirconium Ceramic, and Polyjet’s acrylic-like Vero), conducted durability assessments following ASTM standards, sustainability analysis, and performed a comprehensive techno-economic analysis. Findings indicate that AM can enhance sustainability measures, enable in-house manufacturing of essential parts, reduce lead times for replacements, and lower overall equipment lifecycle costs

    How nicely you talk; I love to hear you : Speech as Cultural Capital in Emma, Middlemarch, and The Portrait of a Lady

    In this essay, I examine how, in Emma, Middlemarch, and The Portrait of a Lady, Jane Austen, George Eliot, and Henry James craft heroines who unite a precarious relationship to the British gentry with a talent for conversation. I argue that, through this glorification of their heroines’ eloquence, Austen, Eliot, and James align this socioeconomic positionality—what I term “precarious affluence” or “gentry-adjacence”—with novelistic protagonicity. Through this analysis, I study the differing degrees to which these three major nineteenth-century novelists use their smooth-talking heroines to imagine an emerging, alternative elite to the gentry and the aristocratic upper classes. Ultimately, the article suggests that, as the nineteenth century progresses, Eliot and James begin to give increasing credence to the possibility that a monied class distinct from the aristocracy and gentry could offer unique powers and freedoms to its members

    Battery Discharge Apparatus

    The Battery Discharge Apparatus (BDA) is a resistive load design to safely dissipate power from Dartmouth Formula Racing’s (DFR) 250V battery used to power their car. Every competition, DFR is normally forced to test their battery weeks or even days before the competition, which prevents them from debugging any issues with their battery management system (BMS) before this time. This load is controlled by a safety circuit which enables proper shutdown and fault detection by processing thermal, current, interlock, and BMS sensor inputs. An AD2 can be utilized to switch between resistive loads, allowing the apparatus to dissipate 0kW, 10kW, 30kW, or 40kW from DFR’s battery. The BDA is designed to operate according to the predicted power dissipation cycles in the SAE Formula Hybrid+Electric Competition Endurance Event, thus allowing DFR to simulate the event which will place the most stress on the battery in a safe environment. Included in the design is a cart for holding the battery and interface boxes, granting quick mobility should a serious fault should occur and allowing the design to connect to a variety of wire gauges. Since DFR places an emphasis on allowing students to learn and apply their knowledge, an emphasis was placed on modularity and utilizing components DFR was familiar with. The end result of this project was a prototype that met DFR’s required specifications and extensive documentation so that future DFR engineers could learn about and safely operate the BDA
