    MORFOLOGI BUAH DAN BIJI RAFFLESIA PATMA DAN R. ARNOLDII

    Most members of family Rafflesiaceae are rare plants which found only in a restricted area in Southeast Asia. As a holoparasitic plant Rafflesia totally depends on the specific host plant in specific habitat. The rarity of Rafflesia caused the limited number of research of many biological aspects of this species. In this study, observations on the fruit and seed of  R. patma and R. arnoldii were  carried out in its habitat and laboratory. Figures and dimension of the seeds was recorded by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM)

    The diversity of mangrove at West Bali National Park has not been reported completely. The exploration was conducted from 12 - 16 June, 2011 from Banyuwedang to Gilimanuk and from Gilimanuk to Sumbersari-Melaya mangrove forests. The result showed that 18 families consist of 21 genera and 28 mangrove species were recorded at West Bali National Park, these are 11,5% of the Indonesian mangroves

    In order to know the habitat preference gradation for gall-forming insects from the border to the middle of the habitat or more precise the edge effect on the galling existence and the expansion ability of local gall to infect on non indigenous species, observation of all plant life collections block by block in the Bogor Botanic Garden were done. Host plant and galling insect species composition differed quite characteristically between the edge and the interior of paths, but did not for galling insect richness. Insect gall richness was expressed as the ratio between insect gall and host plant richness (gall per plant ratio) and in the same time a weak relationship of insect species–area was found. Our results suggest that the number of galling insects per individual plant is not affected by the size of the patch. Despite these results, the natural forest patches are found in this region seem well suited for long-term studies addressing species–area relationships

    THE USEFULNESS OF ECOLOGICAL NICHE CONCEPTS IN UNDERSTANDING PLANT COMMUNITIES

    Plant communities have been attracting many scientists due to their complexity and unclear underlying mechanisms that support it. How large numbers of competing plant species manage to coexist, for instance, is one of the major unresolved questions in plant community ecology. Ecological niche concept is a classical theory which tries to address this question. The development of this concept will be presented in this paper. Recent studies, although few in number and incomplete in many ways, do suggest that plants segregate along various environmental niche axes. Although it is unlikely that niche separation along environmental axes is the only mechanism of coexistence in any large community, the evidence now suggests that ecological niche concept plays a more significant role than has been previously appreciated

    KONSERVASI PAMELO {Citrus maxima (Burm.) Merr.} DENGAN PENURUNAN KONSENTRASI MEDIUM DAN SUKROSA

    Indonesia has high variety of pummelo [Citrus maxima (Burm.) Merr.], but only several cultivar are cultivated extensively. Others became vurnerable and the germplasm has to be conserved  to prevent their extinction. One of the conservation method is in vitro conservation using a slow  growth technique. Factorial experiment was used in designing the experiment, the first factor was MS medium concentration, i.e. 1/2MS and MS. The second factor was sucrose concentration, i.e. 0; 1; 2; and 3%. The results showed that low concentration of MS medium and sucrose reducing the leaf number and shoot length but increasing the root number and length. Based on inhibition of growth, the most reducing growth was planlet on MS without sucrose

    Bauhinia pottsii G. Don var pottsii KOLEKSI DARI KABUPATEN KUTAI BARAT : CATATAN BARU PERSEBARANNYA DI KALIMANTAN

    Bauhinia is one of the largest genus in Caesalpiniaceae family and distributed in all tropical area. One among 300 species of Bauhinia is Bauhinia pottsii G.don. This species is distributed from Southern Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Malay Peninsular, Borneo, Sumatra, Jawa, Bali and Lesser Sunda islands. In 2008 it was recorded that one specimen was originated from East Kalimantan and collected in 1925. During exploration in Kampung Temula, Kecamatan Nyuatan, Kabupaten Kutai Barat, East Kalimantan, this show that after about 87 years the natural habitat of Bauhinia pottsii G.Don var pottsii was found. and this is a new distribution area for Bauhinia pottsii G. Don var. pottsii
